Peggy D. Dickerson

Peggy D. Dickerson, 79, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Winston Medical Center in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Trent Jaudon and Rev. Wayne Hill officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell Massey Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Peggy was born September 24, 1938, to Charles and Opal Luke Smith of Noxapater. She was a member of South Louisville Baptist Church; she loved her church and church family dearly. She enjoyed sewing, cross stitching, and working in her flowers; and playing with her cat, Kittle. Peggy loved her family and was a mother to many. She was retired from Angelica where for many years she worked as an Assistant Supervisor.

Ms. Dickerson is survived by her daughter, Pamela Johns and husband, Joey, of Louisville; and her sister, Patsy Wigle of Winston Salem, North Carolina. She also leaves behind a special niece, Paula Hudson and husband, Roger; niece Kim Parker and husband, Randy; and two nephews, Howard Wigle and Chuck Wigle. One of her greatest joys was being “Nana” to her three grandchildren: Ethan Persons, Luke Nowell, and Hannah Robinson; as well as to her four great-grandchildren. Peggy was preceded in death by her husbands, Eural Hill and Harvey Eugene Stevenson; and her parents.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ethan Edwards, Joey Johns, Roger Lillis, Luke Nowell, Charlie Persons, and Ethan Persons. Calvin Triplett will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Clark Hodge

Mr. Clark Hodge, 61, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Fuller officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 p.m. until service time at Nowell Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Clark was born August 7, 1955, to Durant and Pearl Clark Hodge. Currently, he was an accountant at Joe Hodge CPA firm where he had worked for many years. He was a friend to many and was very loved. Among his favorite things in life were his love of crawfish; and his love of the Ole Miss Rebels and the Neshoba County Fair.

Clark is survived by his brother, Joe Hodge and wife, Kathy, of Louisville; and three nieces: Dana Hodge Hisaw and husband, Ken, also of Louisville; Brandi Hodge Provias and husband, Tony, of Aberdeen, Mississippi; and Robin Hodge Holt and husband, Danny, of Cumming, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Roger Dale Hodge.

Serving as pallbearers are David Clark, John Walter Darby, Paul Darby, Jr., James Moffett, Mark “Freak” Pankratz, Johnny Sullivan, Kenny Sullivan, Wesley Spears, and Byron Spears. Memorial contributions in honor of Clark may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Ben Harold Sammons

Ben Harold Sammons, 83, of Old Fort, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Givens Health Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Ben was born in Poynor, Texas on December 20, 1933 to the late Fred Sammons and Jewel Cade Sammons. He was married to the late Elaine Machesny Sammons, who preceded him in death in 2000. Ben was an aircraft electrician and served his country proudly in the United States Army as a missile technician during the Cold War. Ben was a believer in Christ and was a devoted constitutionalist. He was a proud patriot who believed strongly in the second amendment. Ben leaves behind a legacy of honor and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Sammons Neal; and a grandson, Lane Howell.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Eric Sammons of Fort Worth, Texas; three daughters, Tamara Sammons Hurt and husband Ronald of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Heather Sammons of Old Fort, North Carolina, and Deborah Sammons Rule and husband Greg of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Bob Sammons and wife Nancy of Houston, Texas; and eight grandchildren, Rodney, Helen, Claire, Samuel, Jarrette, Maureen, Aderian and Erika.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Tommy "Tom" Parker

Mr. Tommy “Tom” Parker, 81, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, May 22, 2017, at his residence in Noxapater, Mississippi. Tom was born April 25, 1936, as one of 14 children born to John Armor and Effie Jones Parker. Tom, an avid outdoorsman, loved to fish, hunt, and work in his garden; he especially loved to grow tomatoes. He answered the call of his country by serving in the United States Navy for four years. For more than 30 years, he worked at U. S. Motors in Philadelphia, Mississippi; retiring in 1995. He loved to work and be around people so for the next several years, he worked as a security guard at the Neshoba County Hospital. For the last 12 years or so, he has worked as a security guard at Woody’s in Noxapater. The little children that come into the store will miss him giving them candy.

Marshall Scott Legan

Memorial services celebrating the life of Marshall Scott Legan, 77, retired Professor of History and History Department Head at ULM will be held Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Northminster Church in Monroe, LA. The services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy and Dr. Steve Jolly under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home.
Born February 17, 1940, he passed away at St. Francis Hospital on Saturday, May 6th after a short illness. Visitation with the family is scheduled for Thursday, May 11 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Northminster Church. At his request he will be cremated, with his ashes divided between the columbarium at Northminster Church and his home in Mississippi.
A native of Louisville, Mississippi, Scottie was a graduate of Mississippi State University (B.A., M.A.) and the University of Mississippi (Ph. D). He came to ULM in August 1968 and remained on the faculty until his retirement in May, 2007. He served as Head of the History Department for 10 years. In addition to the time spent with the teaching and administrative duties, his specialty in the South and the years of the Civil War led him into additional research and the publishing of several articles on the subject. He also directed several M.A. theses on local history. He held memberships in the Mississippi Historical Society, Louisiana Historical Society, Northeast Louisiana Historical Society and the Southern Historical Society.

Barbara Jean Carpenter

Barbara Jean Carpenter, our loving Mama and Grandmama, was welcomed home by her Lord on May 2, 2017. After a long battle with Alzheimer's, she was brought into the joy of her Master. She was never alone during her fight with this disease, after all, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. He is faithful. She is now in His presence and never has to be concerned with disease or death ever again! We are positive that our daddy, Ralph (Buddy) Carpenter, our brother, Randy Carpenter, her son-in-law, Bobby Mason, and her grandson Michael Lee Peusch, were all there to greet her! This is the promise and comfort we have in our Lord Jesus.

Bonnie Lynn Rhodes

Bonnie Lynn Tackett Rhodes, 67, a resident of Mill Creek, passed from this life Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center. There will be a graveside service May 6, 2017 at 6:00 pm in the Poplar Flat Baptist Church Cemetery, Poplar Flat Road, Louisville, MS.

Bonnie was born Monday, January 16, 1950 in Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Charley James Tackett and Hazel Mae Currence Tackett. On September 17, 1969, she married Oscar Ishmeal Rhodes who preceded her in death.

Left to cherish her memory is one son, Mark Allen Rhodes Sr. and wife Deborah of Mill Creek, three grandchildren, Laural Rhodes and Mark Allen Rhodes Jr., both of Mill Creek and Brittney Rhodes of Noxpater, MS and two sisters, Irene Phillips and husband Bill of Valley Bend and Ruth Howard of Fairmont.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was one son, James Oscar Rhodes and seven siblings, Helena Mary Herron, Lina Taylor, Kathleen Pingley, Tina Croston, Robert, Frank and Lonnie Tackett.

Bonnie loved life and loved the Lord. She liked collecting cook books and had a good sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. In Bonnie’s own words, “had my bags packed and I fought my last battle and I’ve won the war in Jesus Christ my Lord”.





John Thomas Harpole

John Thomas Harpole died unexpectedly Saturday, April 29, at home of a broken heart.
John was born in Louisville, Ms, graduating from LHS in 1965. He met his best friend and future wife, Katherine, on a blind date at Hendrix College. John wooed Katherine to Mississippi State University, marrying at semester their senior year. After receiving their degrees in 1969, they moved to Memphis, Tn , where he worked for Union Planters Bank while she pursued her graduate degree. In 1973, they settled in Little Rock, raising their children while he worked for Dillard’s.
