Sandra was born December 27, 1943, to Willie Burkes and Katherine Elizabeth Hollis Hemphill. She was a member of Crystal Ridge Baptist Church. Anyone who knew Sandra very long came to realize that working in her flowers was her passion. She spent countless hours digging in her yard planting and transplanting flowers...she could get anything to grow! Sandra was one to always have an on-going project in the works. She was also a caregiver; her home was always open to anyone who needed a helping hand whether they were family or someone she knew down on their luck. She understood that life is short and she chose to live each day to the fullest. Another of Sandra’s passions was the Chihuahua puppies she raised; and she was very picky about the family that she allowed to adopt “her” puppies. Most of all, she dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

For the last 10 years, he has been a Customer Service Representative in the offices of Suburban Propane. Dewayne met the love of his life on March 2, 1974, on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. They both immediately knew that a life together “was meant to be!” Dewayne was known as “Pop” to all children even before he had grandchildren of his own. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to introduce any child to an assortment of outdoor activities such as horses and hunting. Loving the outside as he did, he very much enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. The best times of his life were spent spoiling his grandchildren and riding his orange 4-wheeler.

Dewayne is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Dianne Carter Rushing of Louisville; and two sons Jimmy Rushing and wife Candace of Louisville; and Jeremy Rushing and wife Addie of Statesboro, Georgia. Before he had children of his own, he loved Angie Griffin and husband Joey as his own daughter. One of his greatest joys was being “Pop” to his grandchildren: Rylee Martindale-Rushing, Hayes Daniel Rushing, and Finn Martindale-Rushing. Once again before he had grandchildren of his own, he enjoyed spoiling Jodie (Cody) Ross and Audrey (Alex) Chappell just as he has his grands! Jodie and Audrey gave him his “great-grandchildren” Griffin Ross and Charlee Claire Chappell both of whom he dearly loved. Dewayne is also survived by his sister Brenda Sue (Chuck) Coleman; and his brother James Wendall Rushing. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother David Mitchell Rushing.

The funeral service will be held at the church beginning at 11 a.m. followed by graveside services at Mount Carmel Cemetery with Reverend Gowan Ellis presiding.

Jimmie was born February 25, 1932, to Lillian and Cecil Hamilton in Vardaman Mississippi. His childhood days were spent in Vardaman working and playing with his parents, brother and sister on their family cotton farm. Jimmie started his work career as only a teenager with Irby Construction where he traveled across the US working on projects. His second job was a lineman with East Mississippi Electric Company putting in and repairing power lines across the Southeast United States. While working in Winston County for the power company, Jimmie met the love of his life, Doris McNeel, while roller skating one weekend at the local skating rink in Philadelphia, Mississippi. After they were married, roller skating continued to be one of their favorite ways to spend time together and with their two children, Beverly and Paul David. The love for his family was great and he loved spending time with them. Jimmie and Doris had been married for 62 wonderful years at the time of his death.

After his job with East Mississippi Electric Company Jimmie took a job as an electrician with Georgia Pacific in Louisville, where he continued to work until he retired. When Jimmie was not working at Georgia Pacific or tending to the cows on his farm in Noxapater, his favorite pass times were by far hunting and fishing. As any of his friends can tell you, he took his hunting and fishing very seriously and pursued pretty much every form of game that existed in the South. Some of his leisure days were spent training his hunting dogs for quail, deer, and raccoon. Other days were spent with his son and friends hand grabbing huge catfish out of the Noxubee and Yockanookany rivers or traversing the hills and swamps of Mississippi in search of quail or trophy bucks. Topping his hobby list was always his passion for crappie fishing where he spent endless days on Ross Barnett and Grenada reservoirs searching for the best locations and techniques for catching these fish. As most of his friends will tell you, he was very good at crappie fishing. It was hard to beat him at this game and he would always gladly let you know that.

Jimmie is survived by his wife Doris McNeel Hamilton of Noxapater; daughter Beverly Comeaux of Noxapater; son Paul David Hamilton of Ridgeland, MS; and his sister Nell Harrelson of Bruce, Mississippi. Interment will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville. Visitation will be held immediately before the services at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary on Friday, February 14 from 11:00-1:00.

Dylan, 22, passed away on February 8, 2020 in Cleveland, Mississippi. Dylan was born on April 27, 1997 to Dwight and June Dempsey in Starkville, MS.

Dylan was currently attending Delta State University where he was pursuing his passion by studying Art and Design. Dylan graduated from Starkville Academy in 2015. While at Starkville Academy, Dylan was an all-star soccer player, national qualifying cross-country runner, and an exceptional track runner. Dylan was an artist; he saw the beauty in things others took for granted. Dylan was creative, he could take the ordinary and turn it into something extraordinary. Dylan was a designer, with a few dollars and a trip to the thrift store, he could turn nothing into something spectacular. Dylan was handsome, so much so that he was given the opportunity to model on many occasions. Dylan was a traveler, he loved the beach, nature, and big cities. He was always ready for an adventure.
But, so much more importantly, Dylan was a son, who loved his parents unconditionally, as they did him. He was a brother, who was so incredibly proud of Dalton for everything he has accomplished. He was a grandson, nephew, and cousin who loved his family so much. Dylan was a friend to everyone he met. To know Dylan was to love him. Dylan had a smile, with those dimples, that would light up a room. Dylan always gave hugs that would melt your heart. Dylan is gone too soon, and it breaks our hearts. Dylan will forever be missed and remembered, today, tomorrow, and forever.

Dylan is preceded in death by paternal grandfather David Dempsey, maternal grandfather Ray Hartness, and aunt Denice Dempsey.

He is survived by his parents, Dwight and June Dempsey of Starkville, brother Dalton of Starkville; paternal grandmother Maxine Dempsey of Louisville, MS; maternal grandparents Brenda and Larry York of Louisville, MS; aunts Kathy Dempsey (Tony) of Richland, MS; and April Shaw (Ryan) of Flowood, MS; uncle Andy Hartness (Megan) of Louisville, MS; cousins Zachary and Chloe Owens, Raegan and Braden Shaw, and Walker and Wilder Hartness. Helen Lorraine Black

Helen "Lorraine" (Dawson) Black passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2020, at the age of 78. She was born in Gloster, MS, on February 7, 1941, as the third eldest of 10 children. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and loyal friend to so many. Lorraine attended and graduated from Gloster High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1959. Shortly after graduating, she met and married the love of her life, Thomas A. Black from Ackerman, MS, on a rainy night at Mary Springs Church in Gloster.

They made their home in Ackerman, MS near the community of Chester where they farmed and raised two children, a son and daughter. Lorraine worked at the Shoe Factory in Ackerman, then later decided to become a stay at home mom after they began their family. Once the children started school, she re-entered the workforce as a clerk in the Choctaw County Welfare Department where she retired after 30 years of service. She and Thomas joined Chester Baptist Church where Lorraine took great pleasure in serving her Lord, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and assisting others in their community. Lorraine and Thomas enjoyed serving with the youth group at Chester Baptist Church and chaperoning several rather adventurous trips. She will be remembered as a radiant, shining light in the community and church where she served with the people she adored.

With the movement of the coal mine in Ackerman creeping closer to her dearly beloved home, Lorraine made the difficult decision to pick up roots and move back to her birthplace of Gloster, MS in 2018 to be closer to her siblings and extended family. Our grief is great, but we are comforted in the fact that she is singing in the Lord's choir and rejoicing with all the angels, knowing we will meet again.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Thomas A. Black, her mother Flora Mae(Brantley), her father John R. Dawson, her sister Lemoyne Whittington, her sister Louise Freeman, her sister Angela Burkett, and her grandson Kyle Black. She is survived by her son, Greg Black of Ackerman, MS, her daughter, Lisa Black Brister of Houston, TX, along with granddaughters Jessica Arndt of Maben, MS, Shannon Black of Ackerman, MS, Jillian and Paige Brister both of Houston, TX. Lorraine is also survived by her sister Marion Freeman, her brother John R. "D.D." Dawson, Jr., both of Gloster, MS, her sister Gwen Collier of Louisiana, her brother Kevin Dawson of Gloster, her sister Sherry Cook of Conway, AR, her sister Kathy Thomas of Gloster, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews all who held a very special place in her heart.

The family will gather to reminisce in the beautiful life of Helen "Lorraine" Black at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, for visitation on Sunday, February 2, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at Chester Baptist Church.
