Myrl Ward

 Mrs. Myrl Ward, 99, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022, at Louisville Healthcare. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 31st, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Tim Hudson officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Ellison Ridge Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ward was born December 4, 1922, in Russellville, Alabama, to Daisy and Bob Bobo. She was one of 9 siblings of whom she was the last survivor. She was a graduate of Leighton High School in Leighton, AL, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She worked all of her life as a nurse in hospitals, nursing homes, and private duty nursing. 

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace H. Ward, who she was married to for 51 years. She loved taking care of others and was always ready to offer a meal when you came to visit. She loved animals – especially cardinals as she felt they were sent from heaven to watch over us - reading, gardening, and most of all loved her family. One would rarely see her without a smile on her face. She was feisty, loved hard, drove fast, and fed each and every stray animal that ever visited.

She is survived by a daughter, Janis (John) Madden of Louisville; three grandchildren, Brian (Dedra) Parker, Keith (Christie) Parker, and Kristi (Jeffrey) Shurden, six great grandchildren, Zach Parker, Grey Robertson, Christian Robertson, Georgia Parker, Cassidy Shelby, and Taylor Parker; and one great great grandchild, Parker Shelby.

Pallbearers will be Brian Parker, Keith Parker, Taylor Parker, Zach Parker, Grey Robertson, and Christian Robertson. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Madden Jeffrey Shurden.

Memorials may be made to the Ellison Ridge Cemetery Fund.

Judith Bowen

Judith Bowen, age 72, passed away on January 29,2022, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Judy was born September 26, 1949, to Estelle Eads Bowen in Michigan. She worked at both Polo and Angelica factories in Louisville. Judy was a very talented artist creating pottery, sketching, and painting, and was an excellent seamstress.

Judy is survived by two daughters Karen Baczkowski (Russell Wolfe) of Louisville and Kathleen Baczkowski of Philadelphia, Mississippi. One of her greatest joys was being “Grandma Judy” to her nine grandchildren: James Reed, Marsha Reed, Samantha McGahey, Leslie McGahey, Lauren Devine, Jennifer Baczkowski, Crystal Smith, Marcus Smith, and Brandon Smith as well as her 19 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sisters Camille Lawson and Andrea Luke, brother Mark Bowen, and her niece Angela Harms. Judy was preceded in death by her special friend David Pace, her great-granddaughter Nina Estelle Pierce, her mother Estelle Smart, brother Jeffrey Bowen, and her sister Kathy Innes.

Wesley "Shorty" Tanksley

Wesley “Shorty” Tanksley, age 81, passed away on January 30,2022, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Leake in Carthage, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 5 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be the day of the service from 1 p.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Interment will immediately follow the service in Union Ridge Cemetery in Noxapater, Mississippi.

Shorty was born November 13, 1940, to James Felbert “Fel” and Lillie Mae Justice Tanksley. He retired from Taylor Machine Works as a welder. Shorty was always fun to be around and enjoyed making others laugh.

Shorty is survived by his son Wes (Lorynn) Tanksley of Louisville, and two daughters Ralinda (Pat) Yocom of Springfield, Missouri, and Angel Tanksley of Nixa, Missouri. One of his greatest joys was being “Shorty” to his seven grandchildren: Skylar Moore, Tyler Tanksley, Alexis Warner, Ryan Yocom, Gari Dawn (Wes) Bowden, Derek (Whitney) Allen, and Jordan (Katelyn) Keeney as well as his 9 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Dessie VanDevender of Carthage and his brother Presley (Minnie) Tanksley of Hartville, Ohio. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lesley Tanksley.

Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Jones, Joe Jones, Lucas Jones, Darrell Moore, Tyler Tanksley, and Danny Martin.

Candace M. Stephenson

Candace Michelle Stephenson was born February 06, 1978 at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. She was 43 Years Old.

Candace attended school in Ackerman, MS where she graduated in May 1996. She attended Mississippi State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2001 and a Master of Arts Degree in 2003. She studied French at Laval University in Quebec Canada.

Candace was the 1986 Easter Seals Poster Child. She was an artist at the TK Martin Center at Mississippi State and many of her designs were used on Christmas cards for the University.

Candace was a substitute teacher for Choctaw County Schools, Community Volunteer, enjoyed working with children at Ackerman Baptist Church Mission Friends ministries, volunteered at the Choctaw County Hospital and Nursing Home.

Candace is proceeded in death by her Paternal Grandparents W.G. "Speck" and Ila Mae Stephenson, Maternal Grandparents Louis and Joyce Varner, "Pop" James D. "Jimmy" Irving and Aunt Judy Irving Melton.

Candace is survived by her Mother Dannell Varner Irving, Father James William "Steve" (Susan) Stephenson, Brother Chris (Amy) Stephenson, Brother Ryan (Whitney) Irving, "Bestie"- Sister Kenya Lee and her daughter Abby.

Services will be held Monday January 31, 2022 at Ackerman Baptist Church. Visitation at 10:00 and Funeral at 11:00. She will be laid to rest at Weir Presbyterian Cemetery.

Helen Carr

Helen Carr, 91, of Louisville, Mississippi, passed on Monday, January 24, 2022, at the Winston County Medical Center, Louisville, MS. Lucille S. Whitten

Lucille Stinnett Whitten passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, at her residence in Suwanee, GA. Mrs. Whitten was born September 24, 1930, in Stephensport, KY, to Clinton Hook and Minnie Lee (Tate) Stinnett. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Whitten was a retired librarian.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022, 11:00 a.m., at Weir Cemetery in Weir, MS. Burial will follow in the Weir Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Whitten is survived by a son, Warren Allen Whitten; two grandsons, Wade Allen Whitten and Travis Ryan Whitten; one granddaughter, Casey JoAnne Whitten; 1 great-grandson, Xavier Whitten; one sister, Audrey Reburn; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and close friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Willie Amzie 'WA" Whitten, Jr. and her parents.
Mrs. Whitten graduated from Breckinridge County High School, and in 1951 graduated from Mississippi College with a B.A. She was married for 68 years to Willie Amzie "WA" Whitten. As a devoted wife, she accompanied her husband as he continued his education and advanced in his career to Louisville, KY, Nashville, TN, Bloomington, IN, Liberia, Tanzania, Afghanistan, and parts of Asia. She spent her later years in McLean, VA, Norcross and Sugar Hill, GA. Mrs. Whitten provided years of research, editorial and administrative support toward the publication of W.A.'s book, To Beulah and Beyond: A Story of the Beulah Baptist Church and Community in Historical Perspective 1835-1999 Choctaw County, Mississippi.

She was an active and beloved member for many years at First Baptist Church of Chamblee, GA, which later became Johns Creek Baptist Church. In retirement, she enjoyed participating in the local chapter of the Good Sam R.V. Club. She was known for her love of birds and butterflies, the latter serving as a decorative motif throughout her home.

Brenda Audine Flake

Mrs. Brenda Audine Flake, 80, passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, MS. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 30th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Burks and Rev. Jared Glover officiating. Brenda was born September 16, 1941, in Neshoba County, MS. She was a seamstress at Polo Company for many years, and a homemaker who loved gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Zion Chapel Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elner and Odell Pope; a son, Jimmy Flake; and two brothers, Willis Pope and Raymond Pope.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ernest A. Flake; daughters, Paulette Bailey of Virginia, Cynthia Creekmore of Noxapater, and Alisa (Dennis) Duncan of Louisville; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Flake; sons, Timmy (Shari) Flake of Louisville, Gary Willis of Texas, and Mark (Kathy) Pope of Genoa, IL; fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, a step-sister, Janet Tonia Collins of Oregon; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Billy Ray Ballenger

Billy Ray Ballenger, age 80, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday January 26, 2022, at his home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, January 29 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Memorial Cemetery.

Bill was born August 13, 1941, to Earl and Esther Barton Ballenger in Dora, Alabama. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid Alabama football fan but most of all he loved to spend time with his family. He answered the call of his country by serving eight years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic and later retired as a truck driver traveling all over the United States.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 46 years Sandra Dukes Ballenger and his children: Christina (Bradley) Williams, Nanette Lane (JJ), Billy Ballenger, Tammy Bressler, Amanda Wallace, and Charlie Ballenger. One of his greatest joys was being “PawPaw” to his 12 grandchildren: Alexis Rae Ballenger, Meagan Ballenger, Brendan Ballenger, Quinton Lane, Kerrie Wallace, Kyle Wallace, Drayton Burton, Jeffery Burnette, David Burnette, Elizabeth Belk Hunter, Randall Belk, and Shayla Ballenger; his great-grandchildren Audrey Raye Davis and Braylon Reide Lane as well as other great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his four sisters: Faye (David) Creel, Sue (Jim) Ponds, Linda (Freddie) Davenport, and Janet (Keith) Chism. He was preceded in death by his son Greg Ballenger, his granddaughter Nicole Burnett, his great-granddaughter Kelsey Nicole Burnett, and his parents.

Geraldine was born September 8, 1934, in Leflore County, MS. She was a nurse’s assistant at Winston County Hospital for over 30 years. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. R. Stevenson; her parents, Esther and William Mills; a sister, Geneva Griffith; and a brother, Calvin Mills.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Babb of McCool, MS; Glenda (Terrell) Mayo of Louisville; and Becky (Mike) Arthur of Brandon, MS; six grandchildren, Missy Thompson, Stacey (Chris) Clark, Steven Mayo, Brian (Louisa) Whitmire, Jessica Garrard, and Ben Whitmire; ten great grandchildren, Hannah (Michael) Prewitt, Cole (Danielle) Clark, Alec Thompson, Cody Clark, Kallye Garrard, Bristal Brooks, Talen Brooks, Harrison Whitmire, Sadie Whitmire, and Henry Whitmire; and four great great grandchildren, Paxton, Gabby, Ricki, and Baileigh Prewitt.

John William Corley

John William Corley passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at his residence in Mathiston, MS. John was born March 30, 1940, in Shaw, MS, to William and Jewell(McCool) Corley. He was 81 years old. John was a retired paint contractor.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 2:30 p.m., at Chester Baptist Church near Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Burial will follow at Chester Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. till service time at the church.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann(Hood) Corley; 1 daughter, Theresa(Danny Ray) McBride of Durant, MS; 2 sons, William Eddie(Stephanie) Corley of Mathiston, MS, Bobby Earl Corley of Belden, MS; and 3 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Billy Neal White

Billy Neal White, age 86, passed away at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon, Mississippi, on Friday January 21, 2022. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, January 24 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Hill officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville from 9 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Murphy Creek Cemetery.

Neal was born November 8, 1935, to John and Ada Harris White in Louisville, Mississippi. He attended Wess Chapel Baptist Church and was a retired welder after dedicating 30 years to Taylor Machine Works. Neal loved his family dearly and loving cared for his wife, Mary, during her sickness.

Neal is survived by her two daughters Ann Pigg and husband Daniel of Carthage, Mississippi, and Nancy Jenkins and husband Tommy of the Nanih Waiya Community. One of his greatest joys was being “PawPaw” to his grandchildren: Delisa (Sam) Pennel, Teresa Eaves, Kayla (Bruce) Fulcher, and Mason (Shellie) Bennett. Neal is also survived by his sisters Laura Blackstock of Starkville, Mississippi, and Marvel Thompson of Bryram, Mississippi, his brother Travis White of Louisville, and his brothers-in-law Travis Hutchinson and Johnny Allen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Mary White, his parents, and siblings: Earline Hutchinson, Tony White, and Carolyn Allen.

Frankie Parker Johns

Frankie Johns, age 79, passed away surrounded by her loving family at John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital in DeKalb, Mississippi, on Wednesday January 19, 2022. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, January 22 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bert Jones and Rev. Jonathan Peeples officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville from 1 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Memorial Cemetery.

Frankie Anita Parker was born July 13, 1942, to Frank and Christine Kelly Parker in Dr. Kirk’s Hospital below Nanih Waiya School. She grew up living in Louisville and Corpus Christi, Texas, until the family returned to Louisville in 1955. She married Robert “Bob” Johns in 1959. They made their home in Louisville and raised three girls. She began nursing school at Meridian Junior College where she received her LPN degree. Later, she received her RN degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. She was head nurse at Tri-County Nursing Home for 13 years. She was known for her kindness and generosity to others and was a pleasure to work with and be around. She left Tri-County Nursing Home to start a personal care home venture in Louisville named Community Care Inn, which she ran for several years. Frankie took an administrative position with the State Department of Health in the Licensure and Certification area and was responsible for inspecting nursing homes for the north half of the state. She served on the Nursing Home Board of Health under Governor William Winter as well as two other governors; and she was awarded for her expertise and professional contribution to the nursing home program in the state. Years later she accepted a position as director of nursing at Jaquith State Hospital and remained there until her retirement from the state health system. Ever the professional student, she decided when she was more than 60 years old that she would return to school and she received her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Frankie took Bob with her to Alaska several times serving as a Nurse Practitioner working in different community clinics rendering care to the Alaskan people. Together, she and Bob travelled and made friends with people everywhere they went. Frankie worked here in Louisville for local doctors and has lately been working for Diamond Grove facility. Everywhere Mrs. Frankie has been and worked people respected her and loved her. A professional lady known for her kindness, she was a super sweet person and treated all people the same. If she knew anybody in need she was so quick and eager to help them get better.

Frankie is survived by her three daughters: Melinda Johns Richardson and husband Johnny, Tammie Johns Cherry and husband Billy, and Deborah Johns Halfacre and husband Paul all of Louisville. To say Granny Frankie loved her children and grandchildren is an understatement. She loved and nurtured each one and was very proud of each of their accomplishments. Among her greatest joys was being “Granny” to her eight grandchildren: Kendra Johns, Robert Johns, Jon (Meredith) Cherry, Addison (Justin) Jones, Kari, Ethan, Daniel (Kaitlyn), and Hagan Halfacre; as well as her six great-grandchildren: C. J., Marlei, Sawyer, Micah, Avey Clayton, Kyleighe Ray, and she was looking forward to the birth of her seventh great-grandchild in May. Frankie is also survived by her brother Barry (Paula) Parker and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and acquaintances. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Bob Johns, her parents, her sister JoAnn Parker Jennings, and her brother Leroy Parker.

Brenda King

Brenda Jane Oswalt King, 76, of Ackerman, MS died Thursday, January 20, 2022, at the Choctaw Regional Medical Center with loved ones by her side.

Brenda was born November 15, 1945 in Starkville, MS and spent much of her childhood wandering the campus of Mississippi State. She graduated from Starkville High School in 1963 and then attended Mississippi State University where she was a majorette in the Famous Maroon Band and during her freshmen year was bestowed the honor of being the sponsor of the MSU Air Force ROTC Blue Knights. It was at MSU that she met her husband, James Waverly King, Sr.

 
She would later return to college at Mississippi University for Women and graduate summa cum laude while being a coach’s wife and raising three small children. Brenda also received her Master Degree in Education from Mississippi State University. Her children had also bestowed upon her an honorary medical degree due to her hours of studying medical journals and watching medical documentaries. She was quite good a diagnosing sickness and prescribing treatment. Her friends called her Dr. King and would often call her for medical advice. She was once known to call in prescriptions for her children to one unnamed pharmacist in Ackerman.

 
Brenda began her teaching career as an elementary teacher with the Columbus Municipal School District. After moving to Ackerman, she continued teaching with the Choctaw County School District retiring in 2010 after a 35 year teaching career. She loved her students and enjoyed running into them over the years around Ackerman often hearing a “Mrs. King” yelled down the aisle at the grocery store.
Brenda had a love of music and enjoyed singing and playing the piano and clarinet. One of her requirements of her children was that they must pursue some type of musical interest. She had a beautiful voice and often drew an audience from those seated nearby when singing the National Anthem at MSU football games. She loved flowers and gardening and spent many years with Waverly working in their flower beds and vegetable garden. Brenda enjoyed beekeeping, canning vegetables and making pickles and jelly. There was always an “extra” jar of jelly or honey in the cabinet to send home with her children.

 
She was a talented seamstress often sewing cheerleader outfits, prom dresses, and curtains for her children and grandchildren. Her work could be found in Ole Miss dorm rooms, the Phi Mu House and she once recovered a sofa that ended up in her son’s room at the Kappa Alpha House. Brenda also enjoyed attending football games with Waverly at Mississippi State and other stadiums throughout the SEC and tailgating with friends. She did though tell one of her sons that she was actually a “closet Rebel” most likely due to years of tailgating in the grove during the years her 3 kids were at Ole Miss. Brenda also had a love of animals once having a pet racoon that was known far and wide on South Montgomery Street in Starkville.

Brenda was a member of Ackerman Baptist Church and former member of the church choir.

Brenda was a survivor of Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was always thankful for the support she received from her husband, Waverly, family, friends, MD Anderson and the University of Mississippi Medical Center during that time.

Brenda is survived by her husband, Waverly and their three children, James “Jimbo” Waverly King, Jr (Elisabeth) of Tuscaloosa, AL, Natalie King Turner (Spencer) of Oxford, MS, and Charles “Charlie” Lawson King (Allison) of Madison, MS. Grandchildren; Trip King, Runa King, Rebekah Turner Frink (Ethan), Jack Turner, Phillips King (Maggie), Mason King (Allie) and Allie King.
Brenda was preceded in death by parents, Meadie Britt and Dora Mae Lemmons Oswalt of Starkville, MS.

Services will be held Monday, January 24 at 11:00 am at Ackerman Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at South Union Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Franks “Bob” Oakley

Robert Franks “Bob” Oakley, age 78, went to meet his Lord and Savior on January 18, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lillian “Doll” Oakley, of Louisville, MS; his son Sean and wife Kendra of Brandon; daughter Shea Oakley of Louisville; grandchildren, Mia and Sam Oakley; and his sister Gaye Calhoun of Oxford. Bob was born on April 5, 1943 in Booneville to parents George Enoch and Virginia Franks Oakley. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother George Samuel Oakley of Booneville.

He graduated from Booneville High School in 1961 where he excelled in basketball. He followed in his brothers footsteps and attended Mississippi State University where he played on the basketball team his freshman year. Upon graduation from MSU, he taught school and coached at Ackerman and Louisville High School for seven years and then served as the Winston County director of Health and Human Services for over 20 years. Upon retiring from the state, he then began a second career as a Farm Bureau agent in Oktibbeha County for 13 years. Bob was an avid sports fan who loved playing golf with all of his friends and he also loved his Mississippi State Bulldogs and St. Louis Cardinals. Bob was a true family man and he deeply loved and cared for his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a positive influence on so many of the people he encountered at various points in his life and made a positive impact on so many of lives he touched.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home at 742 N. Columbus Avenue in Louisville, MS on Saturday, January 22. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with a service to follow immediately afterwards. During the service the family would love for people to share stories and memories as a tribute to his life.

Howard Long

Mr. Howard Gregory Long, 66, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Baptist-Golden Triangle Hospital in Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Friday, January 21st, at Porter Funeral Home, with Mr. Kevin Styron officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Howard was born January 25, 1955. He was a graduate of Louisville High School, and was a welder with Taylor Machine Works for many years. He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Long; a brother, John Long; a brother-in-law, Matt Conn; and a granddaughter, Haleigh Long.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Johnson Long of Louisville; two sons, Ryan (Sandy) Long and Corey (Paulina) Long, both of Louisville; a daughter, Ramona Long of Louisville; his mother, Elizabeth Gordon of Louisville; two sisters, Cindy Collier and Sherry Conn, both of Louisville; a sister-in-law, Vicky Long of Louisville; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

 

Ivor Jean Thomas

Mrs. Ivor Jean Thomas, age 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, January 17, 2022 surrounded by her family at her beloved home in Noxapater, MS. Prior to her passing, reverent titles were deemed worthy of the matriarch of our family: Wife, Mamma, Mamma Jean, Maw Maw, Grannie Jean, sister, aunt, bookkeeper, and business owner. However, those names do not adequately measure nor do they describe Jean Thomas. Jean, along with her beloved husband Devon, epitomized a true leader servant of her Savior, community, and family.

As a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Jean had the honor to serve her Lord and Savior as a Sunday School Teacher and secretary for the past 60 years. As a high school graduate of the 1957 class of Noxapater High School, Ivor Jean furthered her education at Vanderbilt University where she studied accounting and bookkeeping. Nashville was a home to the newlyweds for four years. Her affinity for Nashville and love for Country Music allowed them to have wonderful adventures, meeting noted Country Music Legends and regularly attending the famous Ryman Auditorium for the Grand Old Opry . In addition to attending Vanderbilt while in Nashville, Jean worked for a prominent department store where she was able to help with bookkeeping and administrative tasks. When the couple moved back home to Noxapater, that is where she would be for the next 60+ years. For 42 years, Devon and she owned and operated Stallo Woodyard. In addition to helping Devon run the family business, she was a dedicated mother to three of the finest men: Randy, Doug and Chris.

Hard work was a constant for Jean, but her hobbies were not few. First and foremost, she was a mother of boys. Many times sports would not allow Jean to just be a spectator. You could ride by their house, and Jean would have a band of young men that she would be playing basketball, football or any other sport currently being played. She was a mother to many men who called her Mamma Jean. She adored each one fiercely. In addition, her deep passion also rested with her beloved Ole Miss Rebels. Any given Saturday, you could drop by while the Rebels played, but you would be required to cheer for the Rebels or endure the wrath of Jean as she regaled how much better of a foe her Rebels were than their counterpart. Jean was a constant at Ole Miss games where she sat in the same seats for decades, cheering and laughing, while the Rebels played. She witnessed the era of Johnny Vaught, Steve Sloan, Billy Brewer, Joe Lee Dunn, and a host of others. Football was a sport she loved to watch, but the action for Jean always landed on the basketball court where she played and was very successful in high school. As a player herself, she beamed with pride when she watched her children and grandchildren excel in sports. Devon and she attended each game possible and were their loudest fans. Even though her sons attended Ole Miss, she tried valiantly to get her grandchildren to attend her beloved Ole Miss, but alas, all of their degrees dictated that they were to attend the rival - Mississippi State. Within the past 15 years of watching her grandchildren ring cowbells, and some still wave an occasional Ole Miss pompom, she never wavered from her support for the Rebels. Though her heart softened with age and she often called the players for Mississippi State her boys and girls (if they were not playing against Ole Miss), she would still make it clear that Ole Miss was still football King in her house. Other hobbies included enjoying square dancing competitions as well as clogging and gardening. She also loved to quilt, and made some of the finest hand sewn creations that are passed to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Possibly, above everything else, Jean loved to fish. It is with certainty that she is currently scouting for a prime Red Belly hole in Heaven right now.

Ivor Jean Maxey was born to the late Hubert Bryant and Bessie Lee Creekmore Maxey in Noxapater, MS on November 2, 1938 and was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Devon Thomas, and two brothers: Robert Maxey (Debbie), and Danny Maxey (Lanorta). H.B. Maxey (Barbara) and Joan Nance will miss their younger sister. Seldom does a woman meet her soulmate early in life, but for Jean, Devon Thomas was just that for 62 years. Their union produced three sons: Randy (Tammy), Doug (Tammy) and Chris (Lisa). Those sons blessed Devon and Jean their greatest treasures – their grandchildren – Tiffany (Adam), Jake, Bradley (Shelby), Cassie (Tyler), Zack, Daniel, Harley (Colby), one great granddaughter – Joy and two great grandsons – Beau and awaiting our precious Devin. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

How prophetic that the Bible lesson title for Jean’s daily reading the day of meeting her Lord and Savior was: You will never walk alone!

Tell everyone we miss them and will see them by and by; your family will always love you.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 20, 2022 4 – 7 pm at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Services will be held Friday, at 11 am at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Bro. Gary Caudill and Bro. Wesley Landrum officiating. Burial will proceed immediately after in the Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Thomas, Bradley Thomas, Zack Thomas, Daniel Thomas, Adam Byrd and Tyler Wells. Honorary pallbearers will be Tiffany Byrd, Cassie Wells, Harley Thomas, Shelby Thomas and Colby Etheridge.

June Rodgers Fox

Mrs. June Rodgers Fox, 87, died Friday, January 14, 2022, at The Pinnacle of Oxford, MS. The funeral will be Thursday, January 20, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at Yellow Leaf Baptist Church with Rev. John Davis officiating. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service beginning at 9:30 A.M. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 P.M. at Weir Cemetery in Weir, MS.

Mrs. Fox was born in Weir, MS to the late Harley and Vera Rodgers. She was a current and devout member of Yellow Leaf Baptist Church. Mrs. Fox formerly sang in the church’s choir, and was a current member of Encouragers Sunday School Class. This class brought her great enjoyment and an opportunity to fellowship weekly with her dear friends. Mrs. Fox found a close companion in her beloved cat, Mr. Green Eyes, who she cared greatly for. A talented crocheter, she made many beautiful afghans and doilies. Above all, Mrs. Fox was devoted to her son, Joel, and his family. It brought her great joy to be a part of his life and watch her grandchildren grow.

 
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fox is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard “Bud” Fox; an infant son, Bernard Rodgers Fox; and a daughter-in-law, Lori Embry Fox.

Mrs. Fox is survived by her son, Joel Fox and his wife, Angie of Oxford, MS; a brother, Alton “Buddy” Rodgers of Clinton, MS; two grandchildren, Embry Ellen Fox and Mamie Grace Fox, both of Oxford, MS., two step-grandchildren, Morgan Cooper and Cayse Cooper, both of Oxford, MS and niece, Sharon Dooley of Louisville, MS.

Jeffery Glenn Jackson

Mr. Jeffery Glenn Jackson, age 69, of Winfield, AL, formerly of Louisville, MS, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022 at his residence.

Mr. Jackson was born on March 24, 1952 to James and Ina Mae Jackson in Louisville, MS. He was a 1970 graduate of Louisville High School and a member of the Faith Fellowship Church in Winfield. Mr. Jackson was owner/ partner of Millport Lumber and Manufacturing, LLC. in Millport, AL.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife of 37 years, Wanda Higdon Jackson, daughter, Ashleigh Jackson Goodwin (Jason), son, William Higdon Jackson (Christian), granddaughters, Anna Chamblee Goodwin, Leighton Grace Goodwin, and Amelia Rose Jackson, brother, James Benjamin Jackson, Jr. (Helen Marie) and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Benjamin Jackson, Sr., mother, Ina Mae Chamblee Jackson, and a sister, Elsie Jackson Fulgham.

Funeral services for Mr. Jackson were held on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. from the Faith Fellowship Church in Winfield, AL. Judy C. Melton

Judy Carol Irving Melton passed away peacefully at her home on January 17, 2022, after a long, rewarding, and satisfying life. Judy was 74 years old. Born on August 25, 1947, Judy was the daughter of Davis and Myrtle Irving of Weir, Mississippi. 

She is survived by her husband of forty years, Daniel Wayne Melton of Weir, Mississippi, daughter Lindsey Maxcy, her husband Preston Maxcy, and grandson Jack Benjamin Maxcy of Nashville, Tn. Other survivors include sister, Joani Webster and husband Wayne of Harrah, Ok.; nephews Ryan Irving and wife Whitney, sons Nelson and Shep of Madison, Ms.; Drew Webster of Oklahoma City, Ok. and brother-in-law Mike Melton and wife Diane of Brandon, Ms. 

Judy was preceded in death by her parents Myrtle and Davis Irving and brother Jimmy Irving.

Judy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Most of all she cherished being " Ju Ju" to grandson Jack. She was a faithful member of the Ackerman Baptist Church, loved working in her yard and reading. Judy had a great sense of humor and always put others first.

Judy was an honor graduate of Weir High School. She attended Holmes Community College and Delta State University. Judy was a retired state employee, working with the Mississippi Division of Plant Industry and the Longest Student Heath Center at MSU. She also worked for years in the Weir School District.

Services for Judy will be held on January 19, 2022 at Ackerman Baptist Church with Reverend Danny Irvin officiating. She will be laid to rest alongside her cherished mother- in- law Ann Melton in the Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, Ms.

Shirley Groceman

Shirley Groceman passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, at Choctaw Regional Medical Center in Ackerman, MS. Shirley was born July 26, 1942, in Choctaw County, MS, to Martin Thomas, Jr. and Frankie Viola(Stephens) Jones. She was 79 years old. Shirley was a retired business owner.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, 2:00 p.m., at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Jerry Lawson officiating. Burial will follow at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. till service time at Coleman Funeral Home.

Shirley is survived by 4 daughters, Janet Dale Roark of Hendersonville, TN, Debbie(Larry) Clark of Caledonia, MS, Paula Billinger of Garden City, MO, and Debbie Ann Groceman of Independence, MO; 3 sons, Lance(Vicki) Groceman of Ackerman, MS, Ryan(Kym) Groceman of Chesterton, IN, and Ray(Patricia) Groceman of Eupora, MS; 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Raymond Groceman.; her parents; and 1 daughter, Becky Lynn Carr.

John Paul Rukas

Mr. John Paul Rukas, 66, passed away on January 14, 2022, at his home in Noxapater, MS. John was born October 30, 1955, in Michigan. He moved to Mississippi at the age of 20, and owned and operated his own body shop, J R. Collision, since 1978. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jenny Rukas; his mother, Helen Strickland; and a daughter, Shelby Payne, all of Noxapater.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Laine Thomas

Funeral services for Dorothy Laine Thomas will be held Monday, January 17, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. from McClain-Hays Chapel with Dr. Dan Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarlawn Cemetery. Ms. Thomas, 82, of Philadelphia, died Friday, January 14, 2022, at Baptist Leake Memorial in Carthage.

A retired public policy analyst and journalist, she had worked for newspapers in Mississippi and Tennessee, and for a member and committees of the U. S. House of Representatives. An active service volunteer, her work had earned recognition from national and international organizations, and from groups in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Virginia. She also had won writing, photography, and art awards.

Ms. Thomas had held offices and chairmanships with the GFWC-MFWC Futura Club of Philadelphia, the GFWC Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc., the National Association of Retired Persons local chapter, Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council, and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, the American Crafts Council, the Neshoba County Philadelphia Historical Museum, Inc., and a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.

She had earned degrees from East Central Junior College, Mississippi State College for Women, and George Washington University.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Judy Dowdle Thomas of Louisville; and nephew, Robert Dowdle “Dow” Thomas of Louisville.

Preceding Ms. Thomas in death were parents, Robert Oren “R.O.” and Elaine Finley Thomas, and brother, Charles Sidney Thomas.

Memorials may be given to the East Central Community College Development Foundation, the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council, the youth activities fund of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, or a charity of choice.

Stanley D. "Bud" Baswell

Stanley “Bud” Baswell, 67, of Sturgis, Mississippi, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at Oktibbeha County Hospital Regional Medical Center in Starkville, Mississippi. Graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18 at McClelland Cemetery on Craig Springs Road in Oktibbeha County with Kirby Cox officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 10:30 a.m. until service time at McClelland Cemetery.

Bud was born April 24, 1954, to Billie and Jean Starks Baswell. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist Church in Winston County, Mississippi. Bud was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt anything that moved! He enjoyed hanging out with his buddies and was always ready to help anyone.

Bud is survived by his daughter Ashley Kidd and husband Brandon of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He is also survived by his sister Donna (Wayne) Edwards of Flowood, Mississippi, and his brother Bruce (Marsha) Baswell of Reno, Nevada. He was looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild in August. Bud was preceded in death by his parents.

Bobby Jack Parks

Robert Jackson “Bobby Jack” Parks, 90, of Jackson, MS passed away on January 12, 2022, at his home in Jackson, Mississippi. He was born in 1931 in Winston County, Mississippi, to Richard “Dick” and Lillie Leona Parks. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served two years in Korea and later in Hawaii. He graduated from Mississippi College in 1959 with a degree in Business. Mr. Parks retired from the United States Post Office after many years of faithful service. He was married to Dorothy “Dot” Gregory in 1952, and they were happily married for almost 70 years. They had two children, Robert and Lisa.

“Bobby Jack”, as his friends called him, was an inspiration to all that knew him. He loved gardening, collecting antiques, and he especially loved music. He loved all instruments, but loved spending time playing his guitar and mandolin most. He spent many Sunday afternoons at the Natchez Trace Visitors center in Clinton with his granddaughter Sydney-Kirk as a member of the Shade Tree Musicians. They were often joined there by other family members from time to time. He was famous for his home grown tomatoes and could be found at various times during the summer selling them in front of his home in Jackson. Despite his many musical performances, he made no show of his life. He was a working man. He worked the Garden, the Guitar, and his soul with God. He was a member of First Baptist Church Jackson where he was an active and faithful member and often served as an usher.

Bobby Jack had many talents and loves, but he loved his family, especially his grandchildren, the most. He was the singular patriarch of the family, and they all adored him.

Bobby is survived by his wife Dot Parks; son, Robert Parks of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter Lisa Patti and husband Mike of Jackson, Mississippi; granddaughters Lauren and her husband Kyle Tsao of Braxton, Mississippi; Allison Parks of Braxton, Mississippi; Sydney-Kirk and her husband Austin Vaughan of Madison, Mississippi; Weslee Parks Patti of Jackson, Mississippi; and grandson, Gregor Patti of Jackson, Mississippi. Bobby Jack is also survived by three brothers, Billy, Mack, and Albert Parks.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, June Shelton and Kathleen Hemphill.

Visitation will be Saturday January 15th, at First Baptist Church Jackson from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Funeral Service will immediately follow in the sanctuary at the church. Burial will be at Liberty Church in Noxapater, Mississippi following the service.

Mae Anna Smith

Mae Smith gained her wings and transitioned to be with our heavenly Father on January 8, 2022 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. One sister and five brothers preceded her in passing.

Graveside service and burial for Ms. Mae, 68, will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 15, 2022 in the Bethsalem M.B. Church Cemetery, Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be Friday, January 14, 2022 from 12PM - 5PM at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel, Louisville, MS.

Mae was born on May 29, 1953 in Ackerman, MS. She was the proud daughter of the late Deacon W.D. Shumaker and Otie Shumaker. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She graduated from Ackerman High School. Mae lived a majority of her life in Chicago, Il on 47th Indiana. She was loved by many people in the community because of her caring personality and comforting spirit. She worked for Village Food Grocery Store for over 10 years. Mae left Chicago and returned to Mississippi to spend her later years with her remaining brother and sisters. After relocating from Chicago, she joined Bethsalem M.B. Church in Reform, MS. Mae loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Willie B. Smith. The children she cherished- Catina Douglas, Willie Smith Jr., and Silverine Smith. Her loving grandchildren- Sharisse Smith, Darrion Smith, Kailyn Douglas, Lorenzo Smith, Zarria Smith, Makenzie Douglas, Sil’mya Smith, and Justine Smith. Jimmy Rudolph Fulwiley

Bro. Jimmy Rudolph “PIG” Fulwiley began the journey of his earthly life on July 7, 1949, with parents, Jimmy and Billy Dove Fulwiley. He soon acquired the Nickname “PIG,” which everyone in the community knew him as. Early in life, he joined Mt. Vernon M. B. Church, Louisville, MS and later united with New Zion M. B. Church, Louisville, MS. He attended Noxapater Colored School, Noxapater, MS. 

Jimmy was married to the former Lorraine Gladney for a period of time. He had no children, but helped with his nieces and nephews. He worked various jobs as a laborer. He enjoyed working on cars and tires. Mostly, he enjoyed just chilling with family and friends.
On January 8, 2022, Jimmy’s lungs unexpectedly collapsed and he entered eternal life at the residence of his special friend, Virginia Triplett.

 
He was preceded in eternal life by his parents, Jimmy and Billy Dove Fulwiley and Siblings: Willie Tom Fulwiley, Eddress Dean Davis, and Edna Earl Fulwiley.

Jimmy “PIG” leaves to cherish fond memories of his life. Siblings: Willie Faye Fulwiley (Syracruse, NY) and Ralph Fulwiley (Noxapater, MS), niece, Vickie Fulwiley (Arlington, TX), Brittany Walker (Brandon, MS) Joella Fulwiley and Tammy Fulwiley (Syracuse, NY), nephews, Willie Shun Davis (Liverpool, NY), Demarcus Davis (Noxapater, MS) Kendrick Fulwiley and Terry Fulwiley (Syracuse, NY), special friend, Virginia Triplett, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on January 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Mount Vernon Cemetery, 45 N Money St., Noxapater, MS 39346

Dennis Gladney, 59, of Ackerman, MS., passed on Monday, January 10, 2022 at the Winston County Medical Center, Louisville, MS. Gladys Whitfield, 74, of Greenwood, MS., passed on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the Forest General Hospital, Hattiesburg, MS. Gerald Cecil “Skip” Weaver

Mr. Gerald Cecil “Skip” Weaver, 82, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at his home in Louisville, MS.

Gerald was born November 13, 1939 in Laurel, MS to Margaret Weaver and Robert Franklin Weaver, Sr. He attended both Mississippi State University and Louisiana Tech, and retired from Georgia Pacific.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Laura Faye Grantham Weaver of Louisville, MS; two daughters, Junicha Gordon of McCool, MS, and Cossondra George of Newberry, MI; one sister, Frances W. Holder of Dothan, AL; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

Mary Hazel Hunt

Mary Hazel Hunt passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Diversicare Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Eupora, MS. Mrs. Hunt was born September 22, 1930, in Choctaw County, MS, to James E. and Ava(Whitaker) Black. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Hunt was a housewife and homemaker.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022, 11:00 a.m., at Ackerman Church of Christ in Ackerman, MS, with Paul Mowrer officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Nebo Cemetery near Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. till service time at the church.

Mrs. Hunt is survived by 1 daughter, Sandra Corban of Brandon, MS; 1 son, Darren(Shannon) Hunt of Ackerman, MS; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hunt, Jr.; her parents; 1 son, Keith Allen Hunt; and 1 brother, Thomas Black.

Lorilei Lindsey Morgan

Lorelei Lindsey Morgan, 80, of Sturgis, Mississippi, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Vickers Personal Care Home in Mathiston, Mississippi, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, January 14 at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church in Sturgis with Rev. Luke Gardner and Rev. Jeff Morgan officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Interment will immediately follow the service in Morgan Chapel Cemetery.

Lorelei was born October 23, 1941, to Grover and Pauline Lindsey. She was an active member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church for many years. In 1963, she received her B.S. degree in Business Education from Mississippi State University. While teaching at Sturgis Elementary School and raising her family, she completed both Masters and Specialist degrees in Elementary Education. Lorelei enjoyed visiting antique shops and working with her flowers. Most of all, she loved her family and grandchildren following them as they participated in various school activities. She instilled in her family the principle of dedication to family as she lovingly cared for her elderly parents for many years.

Lorelei is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Tommy Morgan and their daughters Lori Ann Morgan (Wayne) Carpenter and Tasha Morgan (Curt) Wiggins all of Sturgis. One of her greatest joys was being “Mam” to her grandchildren: Chloe Carpenter (Casey) Morgan, Cully Wiggins, Jack Wiggins, and Ella Wiggins. Lorelei was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother Paul Lindsey.

Serving as pallbearers are Wayne Carpenter, Curt Wiggins, Cully Wiggins, Jack Wiggins, and Andrew Files. Memorials in honor of Lorelei may be given to Morgan Chapel Cemetery Fund, c/o Jackie Makamson, P. O. Box 157, Sturgis, MS 39769.

Billy Charles “Scotty” Scott Jr.

Billy Charles Scott, Jr. (Scotty), age 53, of Sturgis, MS, left for his heavenly home Friday, January 7, 2022, due to complications from diabetes and kidney failure.

Scotty was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on May 14, 1968, to Billy Charles and Patsy LeJune (Sullivan) Scott. However, at a very young age, Scotty was gifted with an additional mother when his dad married Shirley (Parker) Scott in 1974. Together, Bill and Shirley provided Scotty with a life filled with a little work, having Mom as a teacher, Dad as his coach, lots of ballgames, hunting trips, and family vacations.

Scotty graduated from Scott Central High School and then received a football scholarship to East Central Community College where he earned his Associate's degree in electrical technology. After his college graduation, Scotty enlisted in the US Army where he served in Frankfurt, Germany, and Desert Storm before ending his enlistment at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. After his US Army tour of duty, Scotty returned home where he married Nicole (Vanlandingham) Scott in 1995, and they had two beloved children, Nacona and Tristan.

Scotty loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing and watching sports, and he really enjoyed his affiliation with Whitetails Unlimited. He loved people and never met a stranger. Scotty worked with utility companies, and installed fiber optic cable in various U.S. states. Before his retirement, Scotty proudly served as a deputy with the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Scotty is survived by his son, Justin Nacona (Rebekah) Scott from Sturgis, MS; daughter, Tristan Nicole Scott from Ackerman, MS; parents, Billy and Shirley Scott from Ackerman, MS; sisters Elizabeth (Scotty) Hill from Maben, MS, and Andrea Scott from Ackerman, MS, along with three nieces (Hayden, Morgan, and Ryleigh), a nephew (Preston), his former wife, Nicole Scott, and numerous cousins and friends.

Scotty was preceded in death by mother Patsy Sullivan and grandparents, Charles and Irene (Hunt) Scott, James and Eunice (Tucker) Sullivan, and Hosea and Earlene (Pettit) Parker.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, 1:00 p.m., at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Jerry Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Bradley, MS. Visitation will be held Monday January 10, 2022 beginning at 11:00 AM till service time at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS.

Ted Ellis

Mr. Ellis, 72, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at his residence in Neshoba County, where he lived most of his life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and crane operator in the oilfield. He was a Christian, Mason and member of V.F.W. His hobbies include his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and camping.

Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his parents, Junior and Bonnie Ruth Fox Ellis; Son, Jason Glyn Ellis; Brother, Carl Ellis.

Survivors: Wife of 35 years, Joyce Ellis of Philadelphia; Son, Chris Ellis (Julia) of Flowood; Sisters, Donna Pierce of Noxapater and Debbie Cole (Jeff) of Morten, IL; Brother, Doug Ellis of Philadelphia; (2) Grandchildren, Eleanora and Caroline; Several nieces and nephews.
