Rudolph Holton

Mr. Rudolph Holton, 90, born in Louisville, Mississippi, on November 15, 1921 to Robert Henry and Leona Barnhill Holton, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012, in the State Veteran’s Home, Kosciusko, Mississippi, with his wife and family by his side.

Mr. Holton was a Veteran of the U. S. Army during World War II serving in Normandy, North France, and Rhineland. He served in the Army for 3 and ½ years and was captured by the Germans and imprisoned by 109 days in the German Prison Camps. Upon his discharge from the military, he received the Purple Heart as well as numerous other medals and meritorious citations.

Mr. Holton was a graduate of Calhoun High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Mississippi State University.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norine Moore Holton; one son, Dr. Ron Holton of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Tanya Holton and Salenthia Holton Scott both of Brandon, Mississippi; one sister, Pearl Robinson of Louisville, Mississippi; one granddaughter, Shauna Holton; three grandsons, Dr. Lance Holton, Ryan Underwood and Christopher Scott; numerous half-brothers, half-sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. His parents preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012, at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd., Jackson, Mississippi.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012, in the chapel of Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville,Mississippi, where visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until service time. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville.

Bobby Van Smyth

Mr. Bobby Van Smyth, 81, died Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at The Care Center of Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, September 28th, at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Scott Phillips and Dr. Bob Schwanebeck officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smyth was born May 12, 1931 in Louisville, MS. He was the son of Ruby Vanlandingham and Sylvester Hayes Smyth. He was a graduate of Louisville High School, and received his B.S. degree from Mississippi State University, where he majored in Industrial Management. After graduation from MSU, Bobby spent 17 years in South Louisiana with National Supply, a division of Armco Steel. He moved back to Louisville in 1974 and was co-owner of Lake Tiak O’Khata. He was an Air Force veteran and a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Smith Smyth of Louisville; two daughters, Lou Ann (Frank) Gaulding of Covington, GA, and Jennifer Tillman of Tucson, AZ; a son, Harold Hayes Smyth of Fort Pierce, FL; a sister, Sylvia R. Clark of Louisville; twelve grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Bobby was a kind and gracious man, who seldom met a stranger and always offered a generous smile and warm “hello” to everyone he met. He lived a life of integrity and honor as he fulfilled the roles of devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and son. He loved the Lord, cherished his family, and treasured his friends. He was a man of great strength and quiet dignity, whose unselfish and caring heart endured him to all.

Pallbearers are Bobby Lightner, Michael Lightner, Jeremiah Lightner, Matthew Tillman, Steve White, and Phillip Cunningham. Honorary pallbearers are Elders of First Presbyterian Church.

Veterine Thames, 58, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at the Baptist Golden Triangle Hospital, Columbus, MS. Fern W. Henderson

Mrs. Fern Wentzel Henderson, 94, died Monday, September 24, 2012, at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 30th, at Center Ridge United Methodist Church, with Rev. Larry Haggard officiating. Interment will be in Center Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Henderson was born April 30, 1918, in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was a retired receptionist for a physician’s office. She was a 1934 graduate of Mulhenburg High School in Reading, PA. She was a past Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Columbus, MS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald D. Dowd, Sr.

She is survived by two sons, Rev. Mike Dowd of Louisville, MS, and Donald D. Down, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Helen Duncan Skipper

Services for Helen Duncan Skipper will be held Monday, September 24,2012 at 10 a.m. from Salem Baptist Church in Kemper County with Rev. Jerry Jones and Rev. Ben Skipper officiating. Burial will follow in Chamberlain Cemetery in Kemper County with McClain-Hays Funeral Homein Philadelphia, MS in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Skipper, 86, died, Friday, September 21, 2012 at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian.
She was a native and lifelong resident of the Preston community in Kemper County. Mrs. Skipper was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher assistant with the Kemper County School System. She loved her family, friends, garden and flowers.

Survivors include her sons, James Skipper (Sue) of Shuqualak and Michael Skipper of Louisville ; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and sister, Melinda Sue "Susie" Skipper of Preston.
Mrs. Skipper was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Skipper and son, Wayne Skipper.

Mrs. Mary Lois McGaugh, 83, died Saturday, September 22, 2012, at Winston Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 25th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Mrs. McGaugh was born September 1, 1929, in Louisville, MS. She was a retired seamstress with Angelica Corp. She was a member of Hinze Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Robinson of Noxapater, MS; two sons, Kenneth Thompson and Roy Thompson, both of Louisville; four sisters, Nancy Mohlenkamp of Lake Placid, FL, Margie McClurkin of Tampa, FL, Barbara Stokes of Petal, MS, and Betty Luke of Pearl, MS; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Catherine Slawson Vaughn

Mrs. Catherine Slawson Vaughn, 74, entered the Greater Life on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at her residence in Union, Mississippi. Mrs. Vaughn was born on October 23, 1937. She lived in the Nanih Waiya area for 50 years and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. She was also a member of Neshoba Baptist Church.

Mrs. Vaughn is survived by one daughter, Vicky Higginbotham of Noxapater, Mississippi; two step-daughters, Janice Usry and Brenda McCorey both of Union, Mississippi; three sons, Randy Slawson of Hendersonville, Tennessee; Paul Slawson and wife, Jessica, of Henderson, Kentucky; and Wayne Slawson and wife, Jennifer of Ashland City, Tennessee; one sister; Lexie Barnes Craft of Raleigh, Mississippi; and three brothers: John Barnes of Chicago, Illinois; Robert Barnes and wife, Loretta, of Langley, Oklahoma; and Eddie Barnes of Ackerman, Mississippi. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin Slawson and Fred Vaughn; her parents, Bill and Ethel Fortenberry Barnes; a son, Michael R. “Mike” Slawson; and her brother, Hulon “Pete” Barnes.

Walter Estell Hisaw

Mr. Walter Estell Hisaw, 83, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012, at his residence in Louisville, Mississippi. Mr. Hisaw was born December 20, 1928. He was a retired logger and a member of Crystal Ridge Baptist Church. Mr. Hisaw was very busy in his community in many ways such as helping to build the present church building. He received a "Do-Dad" Gold Award for 10 years of service to the Girl's Scouts. He also served by going on two mission trips to Honduras.

He is survived by his wife, Dorthy Elizabeth Sloan Hisaw of Louisville; three sons, Steve Brannon of Niceville, Florida; Timothy Hisaw of Noxapater, Mississippi; and Kenneth Smiley of Lynn Haven, Florida. Mr. Hisaw is also survived by five daughters: Rosemarie Nichols, of Louisville, Mississippi; Karen Baldwin of Lynn Haven, Florida; Marie Swain and Elizabeth Spellman both of Louisville; and Laurie Risher of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Additionally, Mr. Hisaw is survived by five sisters: Ora Robertson of Kosciusko, Mississippi; Shirley Wilson of Crystal Springs, Mississippi; Joyce Robertson of Chicago, Illinois; Helen Hemphill of Columbus, Mississippi; and Carol Ann McBrayer of Millport, Alabama; as well as one brother, Donnie Joe Hisaw of Louisville, Mississippi. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mr.Hisaw is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Hubert and Stella Ora Culpepper Hisaw; his daughter, Phyllis Chisholm; his sister, Nancy Brasfield; and two brothers, Grady Carl Hisaw and Johnny Ray Hisaw.

Richard L. "Dick" Still

Mr. Richard L. “Dick” Still, 84, died Thursday, September 20, 2012, at his home in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 23rd, at 3:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church in Louisville, with Dr. Bob Schwanebeck and Rev. Scott Phillips officiating. Mr. Still was born July 9, 1928, in Rhode Island. He attended Annapolis, Maryland High School, where he was class Valedictorian. He received his B.S. degree in EE from the U. S. Naval Academy. He then received his law degree from George Washington Law School. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corp, 1st 90 AA Gun Battalion. He served during the Korean War and was shot down in 1951 on a mission for the Air Corps. He was held as a POW under the North Koreans and Chinese. He served in the Honor Guard under the U. S. Navy. He was a Lt. Colonel in the U. S. Marine Corp. From 1971 to 1988, he served as the General Counsel for the Banking Commission in the U. S. House of Representatives, as well as other Congressional posts. He and his wife, Ann, moved to Louisville, MS, and he was an Asst. Professor of Business Law at Mississippi State University from 1988 to 2008. Upon retirement from Mississippi State University, he and his wife, Ann, moved to Jackson, MS. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Louisville. 
Mr. Still is survived by his wife, Ann McIntyre Still of Jackson, MS; five daughters, Sally Sciacca of Alexandria, VA, Susan Protich of Newport News, VA, Elizabeth Rives of Arlington, VA, Molly Venezia of Piscataway, NJ, and Mary Still of Reston, VA; a step-daughter, Ruth Ryder of Alexandria, VA; a sister, Jackie Lithgow of Virginia; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

She graduated from Ford High School in 1945 and attended East Mississippi Junior College on a basketball scholarship. She and W. L. Black, Jr., were married on September 7, 1946. She retired after 38 years of service with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. She was a member of Center Ridge United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, W. L. Black, Jr., of Louisville; her son, Murrey Lee Black (Robin) also of Louisville; her daughter, Debbie Ladner (Theron) of Kiln, Mississippi; her brother, Rev. Leslie F. “Bo” Mills (Celia) of Louisville; her sister-in-law, Bobbye Mills, of Louisville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Odessa Rose, 81, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2012, at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Mrs. Rose was born July 27, 1931. She worked at both Spartus Corporation and at TRW where she was a seatbelt inspector and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church of Louisville.

She is survived by two sons, Johnny Wayne West of Louisville; and Dale Joseph Fontan and wife, Sharon, of New Orleans, Louisiana; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rose is preceded in death by her parents, Joe Greer White, Sr. and Daisy Ray White; her son, James Elliott West; three sisters and three brothers.

Jimmie McMillin

Mr. Jimmy McMillin, 86, died Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Sept. 15th, at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike Childs and Rev. Benjamin Pittman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home.

Mr. McMillin was born December 7, 1925, in Louisville, MS. He served in the Merchant Marines and was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He was a graduate of Louisville High School, and attended Bowling Green University. He had been in business in Louisville for many years, having owned the Louisville Hotel, Louisville Ready Mix, M & M Construction; and McMillin Realty and Insurance Company. He served as chairman of the Democratic Party in Winston County for 40 years; and served on the Louisville Utility Board for 30 years, and as its president for 25 years. He served as president of the Board of Directors of Winston County Hospital; and was the youngest director chosen to serve on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Louisville. He was one of the founders of Winston Academy. He was a Mason, and a member of First Baptist Church for over 80 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Barbara McMillin; a daughter, Julie McMillin Sloan; his parents, Burris William and Mattie Irene McMillin; a sister, Becky Tidwell; and two brothers, Bill McMillin and Dr. Carlton McMillin. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Giffin McMillin of Louisville; a son, Jamie (Lisa) McMillin of Louisville; a daughter, Suzie McMillin Lawson of Louisville; nine grandchildren, Chris Lawson, Kirk Lawson, Barbara Lawson, Jay McMillin, Paul McMillin, Barbara McMillin,, Jonathan (Meredith) McMillin, Daniel (Tia) Parker, and Jamie Lee Parker; one grandson, Jayson McMillin; and two step-daughters, Beth Weingarden and Jean Monroe.

Mrs. Hamill was born December 4, 1930.  She was a retired clerk and a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witness of Louisville.

She is survived by her husband, Terrell Hamill, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Hamill is preceded in death by her parents, Mid and Alma Bearden Prisock. 

Pallbearers will be Brad Bradford, T. J. Prisock, Blake Prisock, Austin Prisock, Derrick Goldben, and Danny Smith.  Nowell-Massey Funeral Home, 724 North Columbus Avenue, Louisville, MS is handling the arrangements. Willie M. Estes, 69, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012, at the Oktibbeha County Hospital, Starkville, MS. Helen McGaugh

Mrs. Helen Quinn McGaugh, 87, died Tuesday, September 04, 2012, at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 6th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. David Keen officiating. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. McGaugh was born June 22, 1925, in Winston County, MS. She was a retired employee of Spartus Corporation, and was a sitter for the elderly. She was a member of West End Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Derell McGaugh; her parents, Bessie Reed and Robert Quinn; and a daughter, Martha McGaugh Moore. She is survived by three sons, Alex McGaugh of Louisville, MS, Phillip L. McGaugh of Augusta, Maine, and Paul David McGaugh of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Bobbie Barnhill of Elk Grove, IL; and two brothers, Bill Quinn of Mountain View, AR, and Charles Quinn of Elk Grove, IL.

Udell Sylvester Miles

Services for Udell Sylvester Miles will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Porter Funeral Home in Louisville, MS with Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Assembly of God Cemetery with military honors with Porter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Miles, 85, of Kosciusko, MS, died Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko. He was a native of Winston County, a longtime resident of Canton, MS and had been a resident of Mississippi State Veterans Home in Kosciusko for the past two and one-half years. He was retired from Madison Furniture where he worked as a lathe operator. Mr. Miles was a member of Chester Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Pearson of Canton and Sandra Phelps of Ackerman; son, Tony Miles of California; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grand children; sisters, Ryedonia Miles of Brandon and Viola McAdory of Noxapater; brother, Ira Miles of Florence.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audra Miles; children, Jimmy Miles, Roy Miles and Kathy Thompson; sister, Izora McAdory. Visitation will be held Monday, September 3, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home.

Agnes McDaniel Ruth

Mrs. Agnes McDaniel Ruth, 88, died Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Winston County Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 7th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Marlon Adcock officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Porter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ruth was born March 29, 1924, in Attala County, MS. She was a homemaker and a member of End Time Sanctuary. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lenora and Elbert McDaniel; a son, Lonnie Warren; and a brother, T. J. McDaniel.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Lonnita (David) Camp of Sebastopol, MS; a foster daughter, Libby Jones of Philadelphia, MS; 2 great grandchildren; a brother, Charles McDaniel of Louisville; and three sisters, Eunice Chitry of Batesville, MS, Thelma Knighton of Columbus, MS, and Nora Green of Terry, MS.

Elizabeth Nunnally

Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Ellis Nunnally, 103, died August 31, 2012, in Maryland. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 8th, at Louisville Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Christopher Keipe officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home, and on Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. Known as “Libby & Elizabeth”, she was born on April 11, 1909, near Louisville. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1927 as salutatorian of her class. Elizabeth married Peyton Alvin Nunnally in 1929 and worked in retail clothing stores. Elizabeth lived in or near Louisville for 89 years. In 1998, she moved to Marriottsville, MD., to be near her son, John Nunnally, daughter-in-law, Marilyn, and her 2 grandchildren, Susan Barner and husband, Kevin; and Laura Sanchez, and husband, Kenneth; and 4 great grandchildren, Payton & Reid Sanchez, Ryan and Jewel Barner. AT 89, she helped move into a house near John and Marilyn in Marriottsville, MS; where she lived until age 98, when she moved to an assisted living facility near Marriottsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Payton Alvin Nunnally; her parents, Beulah Frazier Ellis and Herbert Mayfield Ellis; and two sisters, Gussie Mae Kirkpatrick and Louise Chapman.
