Gladys Massey Wiley, 85, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2021, at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville, Mississippi. Graveside services and interment will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 28 in Craig Springs Cemetery in Oktibbeha County with Bro. Junior Davis officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi.
Gladys was born April 19, 1935, to J. D. Massey and Grace Scarbrough Massey in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Gladys enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and she loved to cook. She also was a Tupperware dealer and many times won the “Highest Seller” award for her district. Most of all, she dearly loved her family.
Gladys is survived by four sons: Joe Shurden, Jr., and wife Suzie of Starkville, Robert “Bobby” Shurden and wife Donna of Gulfport, Don Shurden and wife Lauren of Hattiesburg, and Mark Shurden and wife Angela of Conroe, Texas. One of her greatest joys was being “Granny” to her eight grandchildren: Melissa (Jason) McMillian, Melanie (Joe) McKnight, Joey (Kat) Shurden, Joshua Shurden, Ben Shurden, Adam Shurden, Devon Shurden, and Dalton Shurden. She also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren: Gray McCarter, Griffen McCarter, Blake Shurden, Tanner Shurden, Harper Kate Shurden, Zachary McMillian, Nicholas McMillian, Camden Shurden, and Emberlyn Shurden and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Gladys is preceded in death by her husband Clarence Wiley, son Bill Shurden, her parents, and four brothers Birnes, Ralph, Paul, and Felix Massey.
Serving as pallbearers are Adam Shurden, Ben Shurden, Camden Shurden, Houston Massey, Ronnie Massey, and Barry Smith. The family requests that memorial gifts in honor of Gladys be given to Craig Springs Cemetery Fund, c/o Renee Howell, 2406 Wade Road, Starkville, MS 39759.
