Richard Leslie (Dick) Cain

Richard Leslie (Dick) Cain, 71, the youngest of three sons and one daughter born to Troy and Helen Cain, passed away on November 1, 2017, at his home in Ackerman, MS, after a valiant three-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Relying on his strong faith in God, he faced that devastating diagnosis with incredible strength and courage.

Visitation will be held at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS on Thursday, November 2, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by Bro. Danny Irvin on Friday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Ackerman Baptist Church, with interment following at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.

Dick was born on April 30, 1946, in Kosciusko, MS, and felt blessed to have grown up on a farm in the Zemuly community of Attala County, among his Cain and Leslie families and the wonderful people of that community. Later in life, he and his wife Lynn settled in her hometown of Ackerman.

An exceptional athlete, Dick held two state track records during his years at McAdams High School and went on to play football at Holmes Community College. He served in the Mississippi National Guard in his earlier years, and retired after a long career with Rowan Oil Company, including assignments in England and Scotland. After retirement, as a testament to his community-minded spirit he consented to run for the office of mayor of Ackerman. At the time of his death, he was serving his third term in that office.
Mayor Cain was successful in most endeavors; however, he was never able to convince his late mother-in-law that the word "Stop" on that red street sign meant just what it said.

He was a faithful member and deacon of Ackerman Baptist Church and had served as Sunday School superintendent and in other capacities. While blessed with wit and a smiling, pleasing personality, Dick also was a man of gentle, quiet strength. When all is said and done, he would be pleased to know that the simple statement, "He was a good man," was heard from so many.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brothers, Troy Cain, Jr., and Bill Cain, nephew Dodd Cain, son Quincy Lawrence, and father-in-Law and mother-in-law Carl and Nora Dell McCulloch.

Dick is survived by his devoted wife Lynn; daughter Christi Morgan (Danny) of McAdams; sons Brad Cain (Marcia) of McAdams, Dr. Gunter Cain (Lacy) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Hal Lawrence of Ackerman. He was "D-Daddy" to his precious grandchildren, Peyton, Chase, Terri Clair, Gowan, Avery, Davis, Zac, Kaitlin, Kole and Stella. He is survived also by his sister Jeanette Cain Winstead (Jack) of Brandon, several nieces and nephews, daughter-in-law Leanne Lawrence, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Butch Oswalt, Barry Vowell, Mike Brasher, Perry Lee, Billy Strickland, and Junior Burnley. Honorary pallbearers are Louis Gowan, Martin Frazier, and members of the Ackerman Board of Aldermen.
