Mrs. Elizabeth Blaine Nichols, 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Hickory Cotttage at Winston County Nursing Home. Mrs. Nichols was born April 17, 1933, in Louisville, MS. She was a retired nurse’s aide and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Nichols; her parents, Myrtle and Edward Blaine; and a sister, Jimmie B. Cockrell.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Steve) White of Louisville, MS, and Tonya (Keith) White of Louisville, MS; a son, Eddie (Alicison) Nichols of Louisville, MS; a brother, Hubert E. “Pete” Blaine and David Blaine, both of Louisville; sisters, Diane Blaine Jones of Houston, TX and Jo Ann Humphries of Louisville; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Kiley White, James Nichols, Josh Nichols, Blaine Peters, Craig Nichols, and Kile White.

Ava Doris McDonald Weil

Mrs. Ava Doris McDonald Weil, 85, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at Louisville Healthcare in Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 30th,at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike McDonald officiating. Mrs. Weil was born November 21, 1933, in Neshoba County, MS. She was a retired employee of the Spartus Corp and was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Bryan; a son, Gary Weil; two sisters, Florine Jenkins and Joyce Majure; two brothers, Hubert “Mack” McDonald and Danny O. McDonald; and her parents, Pearlie Mae and Danny McDonald.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane Rogers of Louisville, and Sherry Callahan of McCool, MS; two sons, Terry Weil of Mt. Morris, IL, and David Weil of Parrott, GA; a sister-in-law, Willie Dean McDonald; 12 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren.

Roy "Rooster" Thompson

Roy “Rooster” Thompson, age 65, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Rooster was born July 5, 1953, in Winston County to James and Mary Lois Watts Thompson . He attended Hinze Baptist Church, which is the Thompson family church. He enjoyed being outdoors in nature; had many friends; and lived everyday as if it were a party!

Rooster is survived by his son, Daniel Thompson; his daughter, Hanna Thompson; and his brother, Kenneth Thompson and wife, Phyllis, all of Louisville. He also leaves behind four aunts: Barbara Stokes (Jim) of Petal, Mississippi; Betty Luke (Virgil) of Pearl, Mississippi; Nancy Mohlenkamp of Covington, Kentucky; and Marjorie “Pete” McClurkin (Jim) of Tampa, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Kathy Robertson.

Roy Lamar Roberts

Roy L Roberts passed away on August 24, 2018, at the Bee Hive Assisted Living Home where he had been living for approximately 7 months. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on August 27, 2018, at Poplar Flat Baptist Church, Louisville, Mississippi, with Dr. Gayle Pope officiating. Visitation will be at the Church beginning at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at the Poplar Flat Baptist Church Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roberts was born on March 5, 1928, in Louisville. He was a graduate of Louisville High School, East Central Community College and Mississippi State University, earning a degree in business. Following work at Southern Natural Gas Company, he served as Postmaster of Louisville from 1968 to 1990. He enlisted in the Mississippi National Guard as a private in 1947, served in the regular Army during the Korean War with the 31st Infantry Division and remained in the National Guard until 1968, achieving the rank of Major. He served as company commander of the Louisville National Guard unit for 6 years.

He was a faithful member of Poplar Flat Baptist Church, that had his father and mother, Samuel Frank Roberts and Winnie Clark Roberts, among its original members. He served for many years as a Deacon and also served as its Treasurer for over 40 years. In past years, he served on the Board of Trustees of East Central Community College and on the Executive Board of the Winston Medical Center. He was a Master Mason.

Among his many hobbies and activities, he was an avid walker and for most of his life enjoyed raising beef cattle. He was always sure all of his animals had plenty to eat. He loved and was proud of all of his grandchildren and supported all of their activities with his presence. He raised outstanding tomatoes and worms for fishing, his other favorite pastime.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of almost 66 years, Sara Bouchillon Roberts, his parents, Samuel Frank Roberts and Winnie Clark Roberts, his brothers and sisters, Mary Sue Roberts Bloom (Frank), Jack Doss Roberts (Virginia), Jenny Ruth Roberts Lewis (Marshall), Gladys Roberts, Sadie Roberts Byrd (R.L.), Maggie Roberts Cannon (Joe), Millie Roberts Cannon (Jack), Hazel Roberts Castle (Bill), Samuel Frank Roberts, Jr. (Mary June), and Deck Nolan Roberts (Gloria).

Survivors include his two sons, Ronny Roberts of Columbus, (Sissie), Steve Roberts of Louisville, (Cathy), four grandchildren, Jess Roberts (Misty)-Jackson, Kate Magley (Greg)-Birmingham, Wyatt Roberts (Jordan)-Louisville, Payson Roberts-Louisville) and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ronny Roberts, Steve Roberts, Jess Roberts, Wyatt Roberts, Payson Roberts, Greg Magley and Bobby Stubbs. Honorary pallbearers will be Stanley McCully, Roy’s nieces and nephews, and the men of the Jack Mitchell Monday Morning Breakfast Club.

Jamie Joy Murphy, 88, retired employee of Garan, Inc., passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at Carrington Nursing Home in Starkville, MS. She was born October 17, 1929, in Winston County, MS to James & Mary Elizabeth(Lindsey) Kinard. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Sturgis, MS.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Murphy were held on Friday, August 24, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Burial followed in Craig Springs Cemetery in Sturgis, MS.

Mrs. Murphy was survived by her son, Rodney Murphy of Memphis, TN, daughter-in-law, Linda Murphy of Memphis, TN, 1 sister, Mary Jo Stewart of Mendenhall, MS, 1 grandchild, and 1 great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, and 1 sister.

Jerry H. Edmonds

Mr. Jerry Hamill Jackson Edmonds, 78, passed away Monday, August 20, 2018, at his home in Starkville, MS. Graveside services and interment will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 24th, at New Hope Baptist Cemetery in Longview, MS, with Rev. Jim Philamlee officiating. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Edmonds was born March 30, 1940 in Louisville, MS. Jerry  loved his country and was a one hundred percent committed soldier. He was an Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years as an MP and CID investigator. Back home, he continued in law enforcement with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department, as well as Security Supervisor for several convenience stores. Jerry was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wise Jackson and Mary Clyde Hamill Jackson Edmonds; and Archie Lee Edmonds; one son, Mikael Edmonds; and one sister, Mary Lee Farley.

He is survived by his wife, Katie Kuniko Edmonds of Starkville, MS; one brother, George Edmonds of Mathiston, MS; and special family members, Chris and Mariah Orose.

Herald Hersey Crowson

Herald Hersey Crowson, 88, known to family and friends as Jim, left us too soon when he passed away on August 16, 2018. A native of Louisville, Mississippi, he was the 8th of 10 children of the late Joseph Luther and Annie Lou Hamill Crowson.

He attended Louisville High School. His classmates voted him Mr. Louisville High School, Most Handsome, Most Likeable, Most Athletic, and Most Likely to Succeed. Allowed only one Senior Superlative, true to form, he chose Most Athletic. Upon graduating, the three sport star was widely recruited to play football by prestigious universities such as Alabama, Notre Dame, Auburn, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia. He chose Mississippi State University, receiving a full scholarship. He received All-American Honors in football. He was recruited by the Washington Redskins.

With 5 brothers serving in the military, he chose to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served our country for thirty years, 20 active and 10 in the reserves. Mr. Crowson served in Vietnam from 1967 – 1968. He volunteered to go to allow his brothers to come home. Exposure to Agent Orange resulted in several health issues.

Mr. Crowson was a member in good standing in the William T. Bain Masonic Lodge. He has served as a Mason since 1958. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, he served the state of North Carolina as a licensed examiner for the Board of Heating and Plumbing Licenses.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Joyce Stewart Crowson; daughters, Lana Crowson Stephenson (Charles), Jan Crowson Williams (Carl), all of Raleigh and Rhonda Crowson Partin (Napier) of Smithfield; grandchildren, Kimberly Stephenson Ford (Brad) of Willow Spring, Jennifer Williams Moore (Kevin) of Raleigh, Todd Atkinson (Robin) of Garner and Fallon Stephenson Jones (Matthew) of Clayton; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Stephen, Mason, Devin, Bryson, Savanna, Colton and Ella Ford, Maci Atkinson, Micah Moore, and Presley and Blaine Jones, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 9 siblings.

The family will have a private family graveside service at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Geary T. Walton of Mississippi.

Donations in memory of Mr. Crowson to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 would be greatly appreciated.

Special thanks to Heartland Hospice, the VA, and Liberty Healthcare-Access for the phenomenal care. Mr. Crowson will be greatly missed and forever loved.

Nancy Hancock McGahey

Nancy Hancock McGahey, 73, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Winston Medical Center Hospital in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17 in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dewayne Kelsey officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will follow in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery.

Nancy was born May 1, 1945, to Marshall and Nina Crocker Hancock. She attended Zion Chapel Pentecostal Church. After 28 years, Nancy retired from Mississippi State University in the Dairy Department as a bookkeeper. Her greatest passion was her grandchildren and she loved to shop!

Nancy is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ronald McGahey of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Grandmother” to her six grandchildren: Samantha McGahey; Leslie McGahey; Lauren Devine (Dustin); Mia McGahey; Marsha Reed; and Anthony Reed; as well as her four great-grandchildren: John Wyatt Pierce, Ronald Jaxon Pierce, Ethan Devine, and Ronald Gene McGahey. She also leaves behind to mourn her passing three sisters, Gladys Holder; Doris Jones; and Elizabeth Schliass; and her brother, Hubbard Hancock. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald McGahey; her great-granddaughter, Nina Estelle Pierce; her parents; and her brother, C. W. Hancock.

Mr. Barnett was born November 16, 1946, in Attala County, MS. He was the owner of B&P Dollar Store on Main Street, and the manager of Fred’s Dollar Store for 30 years. Gary was a member of Polar Flat Baptist Church, and a past deacon. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ozell Avritt Barnett; his parents, Carmen Hayes and Richard Calvin Barnette; one sister, Janice Bell; and two brothers, Richard Barnette and Kerlyn Hayes Barnette.

Gary is survived by two daughters, Melanie (Justin) Rodgers of Louisville, and Kimberly Nowell of Philadelphia, MS; one son, Brian (Robin) Barnett of Olive Branch, MS; three sisters, Peggy (James Wiley) Smith of Carthage, MS, Sharon Kay (Larry) Busby of Jasper, AL, and Pam Edwards of Jasper, AL; one brother, Danny Ray (Sarah) Barnette of Kosciusko, MS; six grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Mrs. Mozell Taylor Maxey, 98, made her long awaited move to her eternal home in Glory on August 9, 2018. Mozell was born December 11, 1919 in Winston County, MS, to Amos Lee Alexander and Minnie Pearl (Price) Taylor. Mozell was the beloved wife of the late Walter Maxey of Noxapater, MS. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Mary Virginia (Morris), Cora Lee (Belcher), Nettie Alva (Holliman), Willie May, Annie Mable (Donald), Linnie Pearl, Ida Corrie, Evie Lucille, Mazie Bernice (Quinn), Henry Willis, and Leonard O’Neill Morris (nephew raised as a brother).

James M. Shumaker

Mr. James M. Shumaker, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, with Rev. Hank Dempsey officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Shumaker was born on July 4, 1939, to Oakley N. and Ida Dempsey Shumaker. He retired from serving as a Game Warden of Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries, and Parks in Oktibbeha County after 20 years. Before becoming a Mississippi Game Warden he spent his time hauling pulpwood for many years.
James is survived by his daughter, Lynn Brigance and husband, Tim; and two sons, Eddie Shumaker and wife, Johnice; and Edward Shumaker all of Pheba, Mississippi; and his sister, Barbara Ann Ledbetter and husband, Bud of Texas. Mrs. Nancy Carol Childress Starnes, 76, passed away on Thursday,August 9, 2018, at her home in Ackerman, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 11th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Mrs. Starnes was born July 6, 1942, in Louisville, MS, to Pearl Beard and William P. Childress. She was a graduate of Louisville High School and was a retired secretary with the Choctaw County Welfare Department. She was a member of Chester Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marie Fuller; and five brothers, Pharist Childress, George Childress, William Henry Childress, Troy Childress, and Tommy Walter Childress.

Mrs. Starnes is survived by her husband, Bill Starnes of Ackerman; and a sister, Lillie Mae Flake of Louisville, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Robby Fuller, Danny Fuller, Wayne Childress, Mike Childress, Chris Childress, and Keith Flake.

James Shumaker

Mr. James M. Shumaker, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, with Rev. Hank Dempsey officiating. Mr. Shumaker was born on July 4, 1939, to Oakley N. and Ida Dempsey Shumaker. He retired from serving as a Game Warden of Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries, and Parks in Oktibbeha County after 20 years. Before becoming a Mississippi Game Warden he spent his time hauling pulpwood for many years.

James is survived by his daughter, Lynn Brigance and husband, Tim; and two sons, Eddie Shumaker and wife, Johnice; and Edward Shumaker all of Pheba, Mississippi; and his sister, Barbara Ann Ledbetter and husband, Bud of Texas. Rex was born November 10, 1959, to Troy Lee and Betty Jo Fulton Taylor. He enjoyed cooking and deer hunting, and he dearly loved his dog, Zena.

Rex is survived by his father and step-mother, Troy Lee and Brenda Taylor; his sister, Kim Ming and husband, Keith, all of Louisville; his step-sister, LeeAnne Kilgore and husband, Jason, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; his brother, Chad Taylor of Louisville; and his step-brother, Mark Nowell and wife, Reba, of Ackerman, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo Taylor; his uncle, Ross Fulton; and his grandparents, James and Alice Fulton; and Ervin and Willie Belle Taylor.

Mary Zutha Ray

Mary Zutha Ray, age 89, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Louisville Health Care in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Hinze Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Blanchard officiating. Zutha was born June 25, 1929, to Royal and Virgie McCool Shumaker. She was a member of Hinze Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and working in her yard and her flowers.

Zutha is survived by her husband of 72 years, Garland Ray; and her daughter, Janice Greene and husband, Marion, all of Louisville. Also left to mourn her passing is her sister, Maudie Anthony; and her brother, Ed Shumaker and wife, Fran. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her granddaughter, Susan Byrd and husband, Pat; as well as her two great-grandchildren, Laurie and Michael Byrd. She was preceded in death by her parents; and four siblings, Horace Shumaker, Mildred Steed, Melva Burchfield, and Mavis Whittington.

Serving as pallbearers are Ricky Anthony, Joey Ray, Marcus Ray, Scott Ray, Jeff Shumaker, and Michael Shumaker. Memorials in honor of Zutha may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tribute Program, P. O. Box 1000 Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Prentice Eugene Ray

Prentice Eugene Ray, 64, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2018, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Rev. Gerald Butler officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12:00 p.m. until service time at Nowell Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Butler Cemetery in Noxubee County.

Mr. Ray was born on November 22, 1953, to Alfred and Mavis Franklin Ray. He answered the call of his country by serving in the Mississippi National Guard.

Prentice is survived by his daughter, April Burton, of Macon, Georgia; his sister, Mary Higginbotham, of Noxapater, Mississippi; and his four granddaughters: Selena Burton, Elizabeth Atkinson, Courtnie Burton, and Breanna Burton. Prentice also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Monroe Ray and David Ray.

Pallbearers will be James Higginbotham, Brian Rogers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Ray may be given to Nowell Massey Funeral Home to help defray funeral expenses.
