Robert was born November 15, 1946, in Hattiesburg, MS. He grew up in the Rocky Hill community and was a lifelong Methodist. He graduated from Louisville High School in 1964. While at Louisville, he lettered in football, baseball, and track. At age 14 he excelled in American Legion baseball as a pitcher and outfielder.
After graduating from high school, he earned a scholarship to Ole Miss where he played defensive back under Coach John Vaught and baseball under Coach Tom Swayze. Robert loved Ole Miss even when he was bemoaning the lack of defense the last few years, but he did not love Alabama, LSU, and Mississippi State. He also thought the classic red, navy, or white jersey, gray pants with red and blue stripes and powder blue helmet was the best uniform in college football.
For many years he was an avid golfer, but eventually decided to retire from golf. He continued to hunt, particularly deer.
After graduating from Ole Miss, he coached in Gulfport and Laurel for a number of years.
Robert spent most of his professional life as an agent for Farm Bureau, retiring after 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Myers Garrigues and Jeannette Boutwell Garrigues; and his pets Beaux and Maggie.
He is survived by his wife Jean; sons, Grant Garrigues of Gulfport, MS, Justin (Kelli) Garrigues of Gulfport, MS, and Brian Garrigues of Los Angeles, CA; sisters, Sarah Garrigues of Lousville, MS and Kay (Jimmy) Martin of Brandon, MS and Louisville, MS; one grandson, Jacob; and nephews, Joey Teichert, Michael Womack, and Jason Womack; as well as his beloved pet Sophie. Numerous cousins and friends also mourn his passing.
Memorials may be made to the Harrison County Humane Society, Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Daniels, John Commer, Randy Sibley, Barry Kelley, Fred Nabers, and Joey Teichert.
