Sue Kirkpatrick Mitchell

Sue Kirkpatrick Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Winston County, passed away on May 26, 2020 at age 89. She was surrounded by family, and joins her beloved husband Bruce Mitchell and her parents Hayes and Ollie Kirkpatrick, in eternal rest and peace.

Sue grew up on her family’s farm on Highway 25, south of Louisville. She graduated from Louisville High School, where she was a champion debater and Salutatorian of her class. These admirable qualities along with her beauty attracted the attention of a young man from Winston County’s Poplar Flat community named Bruce Mitchell, who was serving in the Navy and would become her husband soon after World War II was over.

Sue obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mississippi University for Women. She taught elementary school in Zama, Mississippi for several years and then returned to further her education at Mississippi State University, where she obtained an Ed.D in Education. She worked in pre-school and early education programs at MSU which provided “reading readiness” training to young children from the Golden Triangle area. Indeed, Sue was a school teacher in one form or another during her entire working life; including private tutoring and helping people obtain GEDs.

Sue lived a life of selfless Christian devotion to her family, church, and community. With Bruce, she created a bountiful, vibrant home for her children and instilled in them all the right values. In time, she became a loving, generous grandmother and great-grandmother. Sue was a longtime dedicated member and leader of Calvary Baptist Church, and member of the choir. She was active in the Women’s Missionary Union throughout her adult life, serving as President of WMU as well as coordinator and leader of statewide WMU programs.

Sue was elected as a Trustee of the Louisville Municipal School District in the early 1980s and served on the school board with distinction for several years. She was well read and well informed. She and Bruce traveled across the United States and throughout Europe and Asia. At home, she loved to work in her flower beds and gardens and was a superb cook and baker. She was also an excellent seamstress, and later in life, a truly master quilter.

A cherished part of Christmas at the Mitchell house was Sue’s re-telling of the Christmas story, straight from the Gospels, by heart. We beheld in wonder that long after dementia took away her short-term memory, Sue could still remember and sing all four verses of her favorite hymns. May her memory be a blessing.

Sue was predeceased by her beloved husband Earl Bruce Mitchell, her parents, and prior generations. She is survived by her sister, Martha Kirkpatrick DuBard (Leo, deceased), her three children: Judith Mitchell Wiener (Joshua), Michael Hayes Mitchell (Sharon), Janet Marie Mitchell, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

Graveside services and interment will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 29 at Camp Ground Cemetery with Dr. Johnny Collins officiating. The family urges everyone to follow the COVID-19 precautions in place under Executive Order 1466 of Governor Tate Reeves.

James was married 61 years to Mary Lee Goins Eichelberger. He always said, “I married the prettiest girl on the hill.” To this special union, three children were born. James loved his family dearly. He was equally as loving to his three grandchildren.

James was a faithful member of Yeates Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, and he became an ordained deacon of the church in 1976. He attended church faithfully and served in the following positions: Deacon, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer, Business Meeting Moderator, Church Choir, as well as the Church Janitor. Wherever there was a need, Deacon Eichelberger was willing to serve.

James enjoyed playing football, basketball, and softball. In addition to sports, he had a myriad of hobbies ranging from fishing to attending squadron picnics at the air force bases in Arizona and Texas. James also had a somewhat of an entrepreneurial spirit too as he hauled pulpwood and even started Ike’s Shaved Ice Stand. After he retired, James attended church and note singing conventions, rode his four-wheeler, and spent time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, often going on road trips across the country.

Whether he was affectionately known as James, Ike, Cousin James, or Uncle James, James W. Eichelberger lived a full loving life, and we rejoice knowing that we will be united with him again eternally in God’s heaven.

Doris Zane Gordon

Doris Zane Gordon, age 89, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at her residence in McCool, Mississippi. Private graveside services and interment will be Thursday, May 7 at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Prentiss Gordon, Jr. and Rev. Doug Atkinson officiating. In order for the family to follow the COVID-19 precautions in place under Executive Order 1466 of Governor Tate Reeves, the service will be private.

Doris was born March 14, 1931, to Leland and Gersel Files Kennedy of Choctaw County, Mississippi. She was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher. As a child, Doris felt a call to be a missionary. After her marriage, she talked to a minister about her “calling” and he suggested that she be a missionary in her community. She definitely lived up to her calling; she was “Momma” to the entire community. Every one of her children’s friends was her “child” also. As a 15 year old, she was the Youth Leader at Owens Chapel Church for a group of 25 or more children. They traveled to several churches and presented a play to raise money for a piano for the church. At the age of 16 during revival services, she played the piano for the morning service; walked out the back door, around to the front door, down the aisle and got married. When they left the church, the back of the pickup truck was full of church kids. She returned to the church later that day to play for services that night. Doris loved to cook and enjoyed being outside working in her flowers. She built her garden by using Ralph’s “little red wagon” and hauling dirt from the barnyard. She and her late husband enjoyed drinking coffee and watching the water in the pond in front of their house.

Doris is survived by seven children: Brenda Gordon Cagle and husband Glenn, Owen Gordon, Jr. and wife Marie all of McCool, Mississippi, Ruby Gordon Reid and husband Ronnie of Ackerman, Mississippi, James Gordon and wife Jan of Noxapater, Mississippi, Jennifer McKnight Kilgore and husband Steve also of Ackerman, Mississippi, Ralph Gordon and wife Junicha also of McCool, and Robert Gordon and wife Donna of LaGrange, Tennessee. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her grandchildren: Amy Cage, Jason (Krysten) Cagle, Tommy (Shelia) Cagle, Erik (Emily) Cagle, Thom (Megan) Gordon, Anna Marie (Jeremy) McCullough, Andrea Eaves, Holli Mitchell, Allison Riley, Jamie (Jeni) Gordon, Joey (Nancy) Gordon, Tiffany (Jesse) Howard, Rusty (Cindy) Garrett, Valerie (Stu) Wright, and Shannon (Graham) Hamlin. She also leaves behind 29 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, and her sister Mary Nell Furr.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Owen Gordon, her parents, one great-grandchild, two brothers Hamlet M. Kennedy and Bobby D. Kennedy; and her son-in-law Dennis McKnight.

Serving as pallbearers are Jason Cagle, Jamie Gordon, Joey Gordon, Trea Gordon, Tommy Cagle, Erik Cagle, Matt Moss, and Thom Gordon. Memorials in honor of Doris may be given to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church or to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Brenda Cagle, 199 Gordon Road, McCool, MS 39108.

Services are under the direction of Nowell Massey Funeral Home, 724 North Columbus Avenue, Louisville, MS. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by signing the guest register at www.nowellmasseyfuneralhome.com.
