Ms. Dorothy “Dot” H. Edwards Sloan, 96, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, January 27, 2017, at her beloved home in the Beth Eden community of Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stacey Parvin officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 p.m. until service time at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will be in the Beth Eden Church Cemetery in Winston County.
Dot was born November 13, 1920, in the Beth Eden community of Winston County to Oney Lee and Ethel Velma McKay Edwards. She was a 1938 graduate of Louisville High School, and she attended both Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi; and Draughon’s Business College in Jackson, Mississippi. She married Robert L. “Bob” Sloan on October 8, 1944. Dot was a lifelong member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church and she was a homemaker. She was an active leader in the 4-H programs in Lowndes and Winston Counties and a Mississippi 4-H All-Star. She was also a 25 plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Louisville Chapter #60 and for many years she enjoyed being a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Dot was also a Shriners Lady and very much enjoyed helping to transport children to the Shriners Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana; and she was a Honeybee of the NMCB-24 (Seabee).
Survivors include Sandra Wilkey Sloan of Cullman, Alabama; daughter, Kaye S. Gilmore of Louisville; and Col. Brey Sloan, Retired of Evans, Georgia; son, Jimmy Ray (Denise) Sloan of Sturgis, Mississippi; and sister-in-law, Myra Edwards of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Grannie Dot” to her nine grandchildren: Stephanie Wright (Steve); Laura Sloan (Julie “Judy” Blaize); Chris Gilmore (Leah); Glenn Sloan (Jana); Anne Sloan; James Sloan; Liz Presley (Sam); Jennifer Ziegler (Brett); and Katie Odenthal (Andy). She was also “Grannie Dot” to five great-grandchildren: James Wright, Jacob Wright, Erin Gilmore Brown (Neil), Robyn Gilmore, and Amelia Sloan; and her great-great-granddaughter, Savana Gilmore; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Dot was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Robert “Bob” Sloan and Ricky B. Sloan; her parents; and her brother, Charles B. Edwards.
Pallbearers will be Chris Gilmore, Andy Odenthal, Sam Presley, Glenn Sloan, Steve Wright, and Brett Ziegler.
Memorial contributions in honor of Dot may be given to Beth Eden Lutheran Church or Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 508, Louisville, MS 39339, or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71103.
