Joy was born on February 11, 1931, to Robert and Annie Beth Fuller Hisaw in Winston County, Mississippi. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1949 of Ellison Ridge School and she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Joy was an excellent seamstress and cook; she has probably hemmed a pair of pants and/or made a dozen cookies for most everyone in Winston County. Joy always cooked a family meal every Sunday to help her children get the grandchildren and great-grandchildren to church on-time! She was also a prankster with a contagious laugh.
Joy is survived by her four children: Debbie Cockrell and husband Larry, Delbert Ming and wife Diane, Monica Cockrell all of Louisville, and Melanie Taylor and husband Mickey of Tupelo, Mississippi. One of her greatest joys was being “MamMaw” to her eight grandchildren: Christy (Jason) Stockstill, Lori (Michael) Brent, Dewayne (Katherine) Ming, Jared (Lindsey) Cockrell, Amber (Andrew) Harper, Jon Richard (April) Crowell, Gracelyn Cockrell, and Bobbie (Kristina) Jones. She also has 19 great-grandchildren: Taylor (Shelby), Layla (Jordan), Cooper, Toby, Lillie, Cayman, Caleb, Logan, Keely, Lauren, Mallory, Hayden, Anne Brantley, Van, Macie, Hunter, Madi Grace, Micah, and she was looking forward to the birth of a new great-grandchild in June. Joy also leaves behind her sister Gayle Persons of Shuqualak, Mississippi, two sisters-in-law Carolyn Hisaw of Louisville and Susan Hisaw (Alfred) Moore of Pearl, Mississippi, and her brother-in-law Derrell (Elsie) Ming as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Van Dorne Ming, her parents; three sisters Fannie Hisaw, Dorothy Gutierrez, Bertie Jo “Bert” Hisaw; three brothers Marion, Berlin, and Embree Hisaw, and her son-in-law Bob Cockrell.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Brent, Jared Cockrell, Jon Richard Crowell, Andrew Harper, Dewayne Ming, Toby Ming, Taylor Russell, and Jason Stockstill. Honorary pallbearers will be Cooper, Caleb, Hayden, Van, Hunter, and Micah. Memorials may be given to Bethel Cemetery Fund, c/o Mitch Sanders, 769 Harold Ming Road, Louisville, MS 39339.
