Mr. Joe V. Gutierrez, 84, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Visitation will be held at Nowell Massey Funeral Home on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held following visitation at 11 am in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Rev. Michael Wells presiding. Interment will be in Ellison Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
Joe was born on September 13, 1934, the middle of three children to Albert and Maria Gutierrez. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1957 - 1959. He married Dorothy Hisaw on July 22, 1961 in San Antonio, Texas. There, they raised their son, Brent Gutierrez. Joe worked for Southern Steel, where he designed detention hardware for jails across the country. Upon their retirement, the Gutierrezes moved to Dorothy’s childhood home of Louisville, Mississippi, where Joe worked for Fair Oil Company. Joe and Dorothy were active in their church, Ellison Ridge Baptist, and spent lots of time with their family and friends. Joe was an expert domino player, enjoyed tinkering with tools in his shed, loved ice cream and Sprite, and always helped his family and friends with their home and yard projects.
Joe is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Annette Gutierrez, his grandchildren Ashley Gutierrez Siler (Dustin) and Justin Gutierrez (Sarah), and his great-grandson, Henry Joseph Gutierrez. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Tillie Gutierrez and his sister Olga Perez. Joe is survived by Dorothy’s sisters, Joy Hisaw Ming, Gayle Hisaw Persons, and sisters-in-law Carolyn Hisaw and Susan Hisaw Moore (Alfred). A whole host of beloved nieces and nephews mourn their loss.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy H. Gutierrez, his parents Albert and Maria Gutierrez, his parents-in-law Robert Edwin and Annie Beth Fuller Hisaw, and by Dorothy’s siblings and siblings-in-law Robert Berlin (Virginia) Hisaw, Embree (Willie Pearl) Hisaw, Van Dorn Ming, Fannie Hisaw, Bert Hisaw, Marion Hisaw, and Benny Persons.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Persons (Honorary), Larry Cockrell, Jared Cockrell, Robert Hisaw, Ray Hisaw, Dwayne Ming, and Brant Winstead. Memorials may be made to Ellison Ridge Baptist Church, c/o Kathy Carr, 13 Ellison Ridge Church Road, Louisville, MS 39339.
