Mrs. Marjorie W. Giffin, 91, died at her home in Louisville, MS, on November 2, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 7th, at Porter Funeral Home, with interment in Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 AM until service time at Porter Funeral Home.
Marjorie graduated from Louisville High School and Mississippi State College for Women, where she majored in music. She also studied at the Julliard School of Music in New York. On October 29, 1950, Marjorie married the love of her life, James Robert Giffin. After marrying, they moved to Memphis, TN, where Bob finished medical school. In Memphis, Marjorie was an accomplished lyric soprano and performed in the MOAT (Memphis Open Air Theater). Upon completing medical school, Bob and Marjorie returned to Louisville, Mississippi. Marjorie continued to perform in many venues. Marjorie was a member of the Louisville Presbyterian Church, where she was soloist and choir director for many years. A member of the Louisville Artist Group, Marjorie enjoyed performing at many other public and private events.
She is survived by a daughter, Marsha Giffin Shields of Houston, TX, and two sons, Dr. Lee Giffin of Vicksburg, MS, and William Suber “Billy” Giffin of Louisville, MS; three grandsons, Barger Gage Shields of Houston, TX, Daniel Giffin Shields of Nashville, TN, and William Garrigues Shields of Jackson, MS, three granddaughters, Mary Claire Giffin of Starkville, MS, Melissa Giffin Coker, of Huntsville, AL, and Kalen D. Giffin of Starkville, MS; and one great granddaughter, Mamie Lee Coker of Huntsville, AL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Ed Woodruff and Maude Gage Woodruff, her infant brother, and her loving husband, Dr. James R. Giffin.
