On Friday November 9, 2018, Roberta Christine Rutledge, age 92, passed peacefully from this earthly life at the Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville, MS to her heavenly home. She received her heavenly healing in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, November 13th, at 11:00 A.M. at Porter Funeral Home in Louisville, MS with Rev. Mike Childs officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville.
Mrs. Rutledge was born August 15, 1926 in Union County, MS to Hubert and Mamie Gafford Robbins. After graduation from high school she began working as a telephone operator in New Albany, MS with Southern Bell. In December, 1947 Christine married her high school sweetheart Charley Rutledge. They were soulmates and had been married for almost 71 years.
In 1948 they moved to West Point, MS where Christine transferred to the telephone company there. She was promoted to a Service Representative and retired from South Central Bell after 34 years. The couple moved to Louisville, MS in 2005 to be near their daughter. They courageously survived the loss of their home during the 2014 tornado at the age of 88.
Mrs. Rutledge was raised in both the Methodist and Baptist faiths. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Methodist Church of Louisville, MS.
Christine was an avid reader, an accomplished pianist, a good listener, and an encourager to many. She had a flair for decorating homes and for raising flowers. Mrs. Rutledge was an excellent cook and shared her cooking talents with not only her family, but also the less fortunate.
Christine never met a stranger and endeared herself to many, both young and old alike. She will be greatly missed by her family and countless others who came across her earthly path. One of the most important things in her life was her family. For most of her life she was a caregiver for some family member. Christine always put everyone else first. Hers was a selfless love.
Mrs. Rutledge was preceded in death by her parents; her infant brother Benjamin Robbins; a granddaughter Katherine Christine Overstreet; and a great grandson Bryson Hayes Overstreet.
Christine is survived by her husband Charley Rutledge; and one daughter Charlsie (Hal) Overstreet of Louisville. MS. She is also survived by her sister Lorita Davis of Louisville. Her legacy is accarriedn by her grandson Jeff Rutledge Overstreet and wife Rebekah of Southaven, MS. She will be greatly missed by her great grandchildren Brannan Houston Overstreet, Brady Rutledge Overstreet, and Berkeley Kate Overstreet. One of her greatest joys was being Mamaw to all of them and they always brought a smile to her face.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Michael Ard, the Oktibbeha County Hospital staff, the entire staff of Winston Medical Center, and especially the caring staff of the Willow Cottage in the Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville. The family would like to thank her close family friends and compassionate caregivers Dorothy Eichelberger and Listine Moore.
Pallbearers will be Brad Willard, Hubbard Willard, Britt Willard, Hugh Whiteside, Tommie Jefcoat, and Randy Hodges.
