Dr. James E. Calloway, Jr, 93, passed away at Winston Medical Center on Wednesday March 28, 2018. Funeral services will be held Saturday March 31 at 11:00 am at First Methodist Church of Louisville with Rev. Mike Childs and Rev. Bess Perrier officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 am until service time at the church. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Calloway was born September 25, 1924 the twin brother of Elmer Dean Calloway to parents Everett and Clyne Calloway in Louisville, MS. He attended Louisville public school, graduating in 1941 as Salutatorian. He received his undergraduate degree from Millsaps College where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, Theta Nu Sigma honorary fraternity, A.E. D. honorary pre-med society and Topper Club. He attended University of Tennessee Medical School on the V-12 Navy program where he was a member of the Phi Chi fraternity and the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical fraternity. He interned at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, TN before opening his practice of medicine in Louisville, MS in 1948. Dr. Calloway served in the Navy in World War II and in active duty during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952. Dr. Calloway was a member of Louisville Hospital Staff, Medical Director of Winston County Nursing Home, Member of AOA honorary society, past president of East Mississippi Medical Society, a member of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians and Southern Medical Association. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practitioners, a member of the American Medical Association, and a preceptor in Family Medicine for the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He was honored as Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians family physician of the year in 2014.
Holding many leadership positions at the local hospital, nursing homes and civic organizations, Dr. Calloway was past president of the Louisville Rotary Club. He was named Louisville Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1998 and received the National Multiple Sclerosis Society award in 1997.
Dr. Calloway was a member of First Methodist Church where he served on many committees and was chairman of the Methodist Men’s club, Administrative Board, Finance Commission and Building program. He faithfully taught the Calloway Bible Study class for 50 years, and was a dedicated member of the choir.
Preceding Dr. Calloway in death were his parents, twin brother and first wife Marjorie Taylor Calloway. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Edwina Kirkpatrick Calloway; three children: James Everett Calloway, III “Pepper”, Edwin Sand Calloway “Sandy” and Claudia Ann Perrier “Winkie”; 6 grandchildren: Nathaniel, Bess, Charles, Raymond, Will and Christopher and 3 great grandchildren: Eowyn, Ensley, and Loxley.
