Jim was born May 27, 1948, to Lt. Colonel James H. Sanford, Jr., and Sarah “Sally” Hull Sanford in Greenville, South Carolina. He was an avid outdoorsman and was a charter member of Mine and Yours Hunting Club. Jim enjoyed fishing especially for crappie and red snapper; he also enjoyed turkey, rabbit, and deer hunting. He was always willing to help anyone in need and his friends knew he was but a phone call away. Jim was a businessman who owned Guaranteed Plumbing; later as the business grew and help was needed, he was joined by his partner Ken Taylor.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Susan Orr Sanford of Louisville, and his children: James A. Sanford and wife Alyson and Sara Sanford Chancellor and husband Clay all of Louisville. One of his greatest joys is being “Pop Pop” to his four grandchildren: Mary Clayton Chancellor, James Olin Sanford, Mary-Ina June Sanford, and Jessie Dell Sanford. He is also survived by his sister Mary Jon Crawford (Barry Mitchell) and a niece Mary Ashley (Chris) Blount all of Panama City, Florida, as well as a host of friends. Jim is preceded in death by his parents.
Serving as pallbearers are David Catt, Bart Chancellor, Ryan Long, Steven Miller, Chad Turner, and Trey Winters. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Mine and Yours Hunting Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in honor of Jim be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at stjude.org/donate.
