James Kenneth Long

James Kenneth Long, age 84 of Weir, MS, passed away Friday, November 19, 2021 in Ackerman, MS.
Ken was born to J.K. and Madge Long on November 18, 1937, at an army hospital in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from Morton High School in 1955 and was united in marriage to Kay Wilson on June 3, 1972.

Ken worked in several different states before retiring in 1999 and moving to Brandon, MS. He and his wife began traveling in their motor home, and while traveling through Arizona, he suffered a heart attack. He and Kay remained in Arizona for the rest of the winter, and continued to return to Mesa, AZ for the coming winters. He eventually became pastor at Aztec Church in Aztec RV Resort for a number of years.

Funeral services will be held at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Monday evening, November 22, 2021, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens at 4111 Highway 80 East, Pearl, MS.

Ken is survived by his wife, Kay(Wilson) Long; 1 daughter, Libby(Glen, Sr.) Beard of Weir, MS; 1 son, Kenny(Linda) Long of Raymond, MS; 3 brothers, Arthur Douglas(Martha) Long of Hurst, TX, Billy Paul(Joy) Long of Benton Harbor, MI, and Ralph Long of Dallas, TX; 2 sisters, Sarah(Dennis) Kohlbrecher of El Dorado, AR, and Patricia(Frank) Strohschein of Grand Prairie, TX; 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Rufus Elmer “Punk” VanDevender,

Rufus Elmer “Punk” VanDevender, age 89, passed in peace surrounded by his loving family on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital—Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi, after an eleven-day battle with double pneumonia. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 21 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Fred Frazier, Jr. and Bro. Gerald Butler officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 1 p.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will immediately follow the service in Butler Cemetery in Noxubee County.

Punk was born April 17, 1932, in Winston County, Mississippi. He was the beloved husband and best friend to the love of his life for 67 years, Dean Higginbotham VanDevender. Together they raised their only child, Ronnie VanDevender. He was a member of the old established Ebenezer Pentecostal Church.

After marriage, Punk worked at Taylor Machine Works until 1982 when he and his son, Ronnie, established Van’s Logging, Inc. Punk, also known as “Paw” was known for his strong work ethic. After his retirement, he kept busy on the farm and produced a garden each year which he enjoyed sharing with friends and family.

Punk’s hobbies included hunting, attending church, playing guitar, and playing and singing Blue Grass Gospel at church gatherings and other events. His favorite audience however was his two great-granddaughters.

Punk is survived by his loving wife Dean Higginbotham VanDevender of Preston, Mississippi, and by his son Ronnie VanDevender and wife Pattie of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Paw” to his two grandsons Coty (Emily) VanDevender and Zack VanDevender as well as his two great-granddaughters Avey Clayton and Veda Dean VanDevender and was looking forward to the birth of a third great-grandchild in March 2022. He is also survived by his sister Earnesteen Lee and his brother Elvis VanDevender as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Punk is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings Pennsylvania Clark, Christine Clark, Bob VanDevender, and Elvin VanDevender.

Serving as pallbearers are Coty VanDevender, Zack VanDevender, Bud Clark, Joe Clark, Eddie Coleman, Gene Moore, Ricky Patterson, and Billy “Moses” Vernon. Honorary pallbearers are Glen Clark and Larry Walker.

Lewis Bailey, Jr.

Mr. Lewis Bailey, Jr., 72, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at his home in Louisville, MS. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 20th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Becky Smith officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until service time. Mr. Bailey was born September 9, 1949, in Galax, VA. He retired from Taylor Machine Works where he was a machinist, and he was a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; Mary and Lewis Bailey, Sr.; and three sisters, Marie Spruill, Elizabeth Bohannon, and Dorsene Bailey.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Nellie Walker Bailey of Louisville, MS; a daughter, Rebecca (Tim) Mullins of Little Rock, AR; three sons, James Bailey of Okeechobee, FL, William Yates of Louisville; and Davis (Debbie) Yates of Louisville; one sister, Juanita Martin of Pickens, SC; one brother, Teddy Bailey of Galax, VA; four grandchildren, Christy Coleman, Lisa (Austin) Vernon, Macie Yates, and Nathaniel Stewart; and five great grandchildren, Rylee Grace Vernon, Jessa Vernon, Maverick Vernon, J.J. Coleman, and Dalton Coleman.

Paula Daly Fulton

Louisville lost a beloved mother, sister and friend on November 18, 2021 who loved to be called GP (otherwise known as) Grandma Paula. She raised her children and grandchildren in love and devotion always showing them how to be generous to others. Paula was such a wonderful and kind soul with a great spirit about her.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she played the piano starting at the age of 16 and for many more years later all while staying involved in the ministry of Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), a teacher for the Sacrament of Confirmation and eventually becoming a Lay Ecclesial Minister.

Paula graduated from Louisville High School where she continued a higher education at Mississippi University for Women and finished her Specialist Degree at Mississippi State University. Paula started her teaching career in special ed then went on to be a 5th grade teacher and Special Education Director eventually retiring as principal of Fair Elementary. Her colleagues knew her as a fun and spunky soul, always willing to cheer them and the kids up.

To say Paula was a lady of service is an understatement. Paula was heavily involved in the local Prairie Girl Scout Council where she shaped so many young girls lives and taught them be a leader in the community. She was never known as the outdoorsman but managed to get her girl scout license at Camp Tik-a-Witha on a rainy weekend camping trip. She enjoyed her time as the Louisville High Athletic Booster President and MS University for Women Alumnae officer. Paula was also involved in the Louisville Pilot Club and served as president as she was passionate about helping advocate leadership in service in our area. Another of Paula’s favorite places to spend time was the Cornerstone Clinic and was on the board at the Louisville Housing Authority.

Paula loved her heritage of the Daly and Plummber family with fun reunions from Hammond, Louisiana to Philadelphia, MS to Bennettsville, SC. She was a member of the Daughter’s of American Revolution (DAR) where she became the Regent for the Nanih Waiya Chapter to continue promoting patriotism and preserving American history.

Paula enjoyed learning to play bridge however she loved the spirit of comradery with her friends most of all. She truly has more friends than one can count but through it all she remained good friends with her childhood classmates. They later became known as the Sugar Bells, having an annual spend the night party, staying up playing music and sharing fun memories with each other. She cared so deeply about her friends and genuinely loved them all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie Roberta Plummer Daly and James Paul Daly.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Horan of Mooresville, NC; her son, Greg Fulton of Louisville, MS; two sisters, Theresa (T.F.) Bridges of Louisville, MS and Mary Elizabeth Haley of Grenada, MS; two brothers, Mike (Dorothy) Daly of Brandon, MS and Barney (Patti) Daly of Madison, MS; five grandchildren, Brandon Fulton, Sarah Horan, Bryce Horan, Daly Horan, and Savannah Horan; and three great grandchildren, Aubree Fulton, Cooper Fulton, and Bailee Ann Fulton.

Benjamin Douglas Kirk

Benjamin Douglas Kirk, 38, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, in Macon, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 20 at Noxapater Baptist Church in Noxapater, Mississippi, with Rev. Tommy Jones and Rev. Mike Fondren officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Interment will immediately follow the service in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Noxapater.

Ben was born January 17, 1983, to Bruce and Linda Quinn Kirk in Tupelo, Mississippi. Ben was a graduate of Noxapater Attendance Center and East Central Community College. Ben is a man that was “the best dad, the best man, the best friend” who will be missed by all who knew him. His family “watched him grow into a fine man who always had a smile to share and a helping hand.” Ben’s character was shaped by his parents; his mom said, “For you I have prayed son, since the day I knew you were a part of me and all your life. You have been my rock and my helper whenever I needed you. I am so blessed to call you ‘my son’. I remember the night you asked God to live in your heart, Son, so for now it’s ‘bye, Son’…I very much look forward to seeing you again.” To his Momma Tenie, he was “my grandson who checked on me everyday and was such a joy.” She loved “watching you become such a good husband and daddy.” To Sydney “being Ben Kirk’s little sister has always been such an honor, said with such respect and usually a laugh by everyone that called me that. Hearing you called ‘Daddy’ by the kids and ‘my husband’ by Nadine and ‘that’s my son’ by Mama and Daddy is the same, such love and just admiration, especially by the kiddos who want to be just like you; ‘brother’ by my husband, and ‘Uncle Ben’ by my own girls that love you so much and knew they could come to you for a tickle and a laugh.” To Marty, “You were the first boy I ever loved and have always thought you hung the moon and looked up to you with such pride to call you mine. You’ve always been my protector, my advice giver, my problem solver, my safe place. You made me laugh like no other with your quick wit, and you made me so proud of how you always fought for what was right. You had such quiet strength rooted in your faith in God and the belief in honest, hard work. You were the proudest husband to your perfect match, Nadine, and the best daddy to Corbin (Boomer), Caroline (Doodle Bug), and Catie (Pearl). You were the only grandson to your proud grandparents, the only beloved son to your mama and daddy, and the only brother to your little sisters. You were the funny uncle always up for a joke and tickle fight.” He was “one of the brightest lights God put on this earth…now shining for our family and all of his many friends in the gracious hands of our Maker. May his courageous and strong spirit live on through his beautiful family.”

Ben is survived by his loving wife Nadine Kirk, and by his three children: Corbin, Caroline, and Catie Kirk all of Noxapater. He is also survived by his parents Bruce and Linda Kirk of Noxapater, his sisters Sydney Kirk (Kolby) Sisson of Clinton, Mississippi, and Mary Margaret (T. J.) Robbins of Booneville, Mississippi, and his grandmothers Loretta Kirk and Tenie Quinn both of Noxapater, as well as his loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends. Ben is preceded in death by both his grandfathers Bobby Kirk and Doug Quinn.

Serving as pallbearers are Tommy Bartholomew, Dennis Bond, Mark Covington, Mich McAdory, Bill Stalcup, and Stuart Waddell. Brenda Joyce (Wells) Pearson

Brenda Joyce (Wells) Pearson passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Choctaw County Nursing Center in Ackerman, MS. 

Brenda was born March 29, 1943, in Rolling Fork, MS, to Calton and Etoy(Dean) Wells. She was 78 years old and a member of Chester Baptist Church near Ackerman, MS. Before retiring, Brenda was employed by Fair Propane as Office Manager. She also worked many years as a dental assistant for Dr. James B. Bryant.

Brenda lived a life dedicated to faith, family, and friends before the devastation of Alzheimer's stole her ability to do the things she loved. Her smile was contagious, and she defended those she loved without hesitation or regrets. Her faith sustained her through the difficult periods of her life, and her church was of utmost importance to her. She was so very proud of her family, but especially her grandchildren of which she boasted often.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021, 1:00 p.m., at Chester Baptist Church near Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held beginning at 11:00 a.m. till service time. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in the Chester community.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 57 years, Scott Pearson, who was by her side from the beginning of this horrific disease until it finally took her life. She is also survived by 1 daughter, Donna(Mark) Gillis of Sturgis; 1 son, Mike(Deanna) Pearson of Ackerman, MS; 1 sister, Ann(Keith) Coleman of Ackerman; 3 grandchildren, Jace Pearson of Bruce, MS, Brooke(Brandon) Mast of Sturgis, MS, Anna Gillis of Sturgis, MS; and 1 great-grandson(James Bo Mast) expected in March, 2022.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister, Janice Hollingsworth.

Frederic (Fred) Moss Hollis

Frederic (Fred) Moss Hollis passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021, at his residence in Ackerman, MS. Fred was born June 14, 1934, in Choctaw County, MS, to Eric and Rachel(Moss) Hollis. He was 87 years old and retired as a heavy machine operator.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021, 2:00 p.m., at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS, with Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.
Fred is survived by a daughter, Rachelle (Isaac, Jr.) Borders of Brewton, AL, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Wayne Deronda Hollis, sister, Marjorie Sue O'Bryant, and son, Fred William Hollis.

Calvin Leroy Parker

Calvin Leroy Parker, age 72, passed away at his residence in Starkville, Mississippi, on November 11, 2021. Leroy was born in Corpus Christi, Texas and grew up in Louisville, MS and was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He was a retired Mechanical Contractor with Brislin Corporation; he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Starkville and attended the Berean Sunday School class; he was an active participant in the Nail Benders Mission group; he was a Bass Tournament fisherman, an avid hunter and loved trail riding his horses; he was a life time member of the Dancing Rabbit Hunting Club; he was the Mechanical Contractor for the first expansion to Davis Wade Stadium at Mississippi State University.

Services are scheduled for Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at the First Baptist Church in Starkville. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 with the funeral service to follow at 11 A.M. The Reverend Clifton Curtis will officiate the service. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Mantee, Mississippi.

Leroy is survived by his son, Eric Parker and his wife, Cyndi of Starkville; daughter, Leigh Bullock-Walker and her husband, Dwayne of Philadelphia; brother, Barry Parker of Louisville; sister Frankie Johns; grandchildren, Parker Bullock, Fallon Parker, Arden Parker, Sebastian Rigdon, and Noah Rutherford; great grandchildren Grayson Rigdon and Ava Bullock.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Davis Parker; parents Frank Parker and Christine Kelly Parker; sister, JoAnn Parker Eubanks.

Alice Faye Thomas

Funeral services for Alice Faye Thomas will be held Monday, November 15, 2021 at 2 p.m. from McClain-Hays Chapel with Rev. Rick Benson officiating. Burial will follow in Cooks Chapel Cemetery. Mrs. Thomas, 83, of Philadelphia, died Friday, November 12, 2021.

She was a native of Noxapater, MS and a longtime resident of the Shady Grove Community of Neshoba County. Faye was a wonderful homemaker and chef. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Nelson Baptist Church.

Survivors include children, Dianne Bozeman (Steve), Scott Thomas (Wendy), Debbie McCaslin (Billy), John Thomas (Lovie); grandchildren, Molly Rhodes, Kerry and Thomas McCaslin, Drew and Morgan Bozeman, Katy Bateman and Harrison Thomas; great-grandchildren, Ella Grace and Forrest Rhodes, Emma Kate and Par Bateman and William Beckett Thomas; sisters, Reba Coward and Nancy Bateman; brothers, Johnny, Tommy and Jeffrey Coleman.

Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Thomas; sister, Wanda Mayerhoff.

Ms. Kirkland, 88, passed away Wednesday, November 10 ,2021 at her home. She lived in the House/Little Rock community most of her life. She was retired from Kerr Glass where she worked in Quality Control Department. She was a member of Pentecostals of House Church. Her hobbies and special interests were her family, church, sewing and rescuing animals.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Nolen Kirkland; sisters, Louise Adams, Infant Eva Jewell Warren; brothers, Leonard, Clayton, Willie, Lamar, and Charles Warren.

Julie Bouchillon Burt

Julie Karen Burt, 44, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, November 11 at Northstar Church in Saltillo, Mississippi, with Rev. Terry Ledbetter and Rev. Darrin Webb officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. There will also be a service at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021, at Poplar Flat Baptist Church in Louisville, Mississippi, with Bro. Doug Wise and Bro. Darrin Webb officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in Poplar Flat Cemetery in Louisville.

Julie was born May 4, 1977, to Randy and Jane Williams Bouchillon in Louisville. She was a member of Northstar Church in Saltillo, Mississippi, and she dearly loved her church family. Julie put God first in her life and led others by her example. She also enjoyed many outdoor activities especially fishing. As a graphic designer, Julie was a very creative person but her main focus was her family; she felt that “being a mother was her calling.”

Julie is survived by her husband of 22 years Jonathan Burt of Saltillo, and by her three children: Kelsey, Isaac, and Saralane Burt. She also leaves behind her parents Randy and Jane Bouchillon, her sister Rachel (Richard) Nance, and two nephews Sam and Bryce Nance all of Louisville. Julie is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Leon and Janice Williams, and her paternal grandparents Jimmie and Joyce Bouchillon.

Serving as pallbearers at the service in Saltillo are Troy Commer, Richard Nance, Jimmie Webb, and Thad Webb. Pallbearers for the service in Louisville on Friday are Brock Burton, Brad Hodges, Michael Alex Hodges, Richard Nance, Jimmie Webb, and Thad Webb.

Wynnie Inez Ferguson Blaine

Wynnie Inez Ferguson Blaine, 94, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021, at the Windsor Place in Columbus, Mississippi. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Inez was born October 10, 1927, to Marshall and Effie Carter Ferguson in Louisville. She attended church at Shiloh Baptist Church where she taught a Sunday school class. Inez, a homemaker, was an excellent seamstress and she also loved to crochet; she made many beautiful afghans and keepsakes for her family and friends. She loved flowers and enjoyed growing such beautiful ones. Inez was a fun-loving grandmother who taught and played board and card games with her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She was also an excellent cook and gave each of her boys and their family a handwritten cookbook of her recipes.

Inez is survived by three sons: Danny A. Burns and wife Susan of Columbus, Jerry M. Burns and wife Sheryl of Grandin, Florida, and Robin G. Blaine of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Grandma” to her grandsons Yancy (Shanda) Burns and Daniel (Misty) Burns and to her five great-grandchildren: Dylan and Madilyn Burns and Morgan, Harper, and Evan Burns. She is preceded in death by her parents and five siblings: Winston Miles Hayes, Clay Ferguson, LeeElla Miles, Jean Rodgers, and Cecil (Cil) Huntley.

Miss Sarah Emily Catt, 22, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, November 11th, at South Louisville Baptist Church, with Rev. Trent Jaudon and Rev. Jonathan Peeples officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 10th from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at South Louisville Baptist Church. Interment will be in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery in McCool, MS. Sarah was born July 23, 1999, in West Point, MS. She was a 2018 graduate of Winston Academy, and a student at Mississippi State University. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Donnie and Linda Crowder, and Stanley and Daphne Catt.

She is survived by her mother, Monica Arnault Catt of McCool, MS; her father, James (Leigh Ann) Catt of Starkville, MS; her siblings, Will Catt, Gage Morgan, Shelby Morgan, and Hunter Morgan, all of Starkville, MS; and her grandparents, Larry and Sandy Arnault of Searcy, AR, and David and Ancie Duncan of West Point, MS.

Pallbearers will be John Catt, John Douglas Barker, Jason Warner, Craig Arnault, Marty Crowder, Clay Crowder, Neil Fortenberry, Tyler Fortenberry, Mikell Bradberry, and Mackey Bradberry.
