Jimmy Clyde Dempsey

Mr. Jimmy Clyde Dempsey, 84, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 in Birmingham, AL. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. on Friday, May 21st, at Porter Funeral Home, with Pastor Terry Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1 hour before the service. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born April 25, 1937 to Jim and Rachel Dempsey of Louisville, MS, Jimmy enjoyed a lifelong career in education, having graduated from Delta State Teachers College. Jimmy was known to athletes he coached and students alike as simply Coach Demp and was beloved by many. Jimmy Clyde was a God fearing American, a classic gentleman with a quick wit who was a stranger to no one, and a friend to many. He always had a story to tell and a laugh to share. Jimmy was a collector of pens, caps, menus, and match books. His Bible was read, worn, and told the story of his heart through notes, quotes, and poems. Jimmy loved the freedom of the open road and he would always say “You ride with pride when you ride with Clyde” and we can say with certainty that his last trip was one to be proud of. “Well done My good and faithful servant… and enter into the joy of the Lord.”

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Allyson (Paul) McKay and Wade (Lacy) Dempsey, as well as 3 granddaughters, Annie, Jessi, and Carley, and only grandson Caylen. Included also are the many family and friends he loved along the way as well as his Whitehall Methodist Church family.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Eaves, David Gully, David Luke, Cliff Lusk, Jeff Reed, and John Woodward.

Eva Dean Johnson

Mrs. Eva Dean Johnson, 90, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at her home in Noxapater, MS. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, May 21st, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Franklin Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Liberty Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 

Mrs. Johnson was born October 19, 1930, in Winston County. She was a nurses aide for Tri-County Nursing Home for many years, and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oma Savle Johnson; her parents, Allie Swindle Smith and Earl V. Smith; one sister, Delma Ruth Slawson; and four brothers, Richard Edward Smith, William Paul Smith, Jimmy Don Smith, and John Henry Smith.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Johnson and Eva Sue Clay, both of Noxapater; three sons, David Johnson of Arkansas, Jasper Johnson of Louisville, and Oma Lynn Johnson of Linwood; seven sisters, Josephine Quinn of Noxapater, Christine Yates of Noxapater, Gladys Drury of Noxapater, Sammie Hemphill of Philadelphia, Allie Jean Bozeman of Philadelphia, Ann Jenkins of Philadelphia, and Rosemary Brady of Sallisaw, OK; three brothers, Earl Garland Smith, Bobby Joe Smith, and Rex Allen Smith, all of Noxapater; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Rex Smith, Bobby Joe Smith, Dwayne Howard, Wayne Smith, Paul Smith, and Garland Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Dustin Quinn.

Ronnie Yarbrough Triplett

Ronnie Yarbrough Triplett, 57, of Louisville, MS., passed on Friday, May 14, 2021, at his home. Funeral Service will be Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 11 a.m., from Beck Funeral Home. Dorothy “Dot” Hare Rodgers

Dorothy “Dot” Hare Rodgers, 89, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021, at Winston Medical Center in Louisville, Mississippi. Graveside services and interment will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2021, at Plattsburg Cemetery with Bro. Dwight Fleming and Bro. Trent Jaudon officiating.

Dot was born April 16, 1932, to Major and Maggie Lois Thrasher Hare in Louisville. She was a member of Plattsburg Baptist Church of Noxapater. Dot was an excellent seamstress who enjoyed sewing and quilting. She loved working in her yard and her flowers; with her “green thumb” she could plant any flower or tree and it flourished. Dot also enjoyed keeping her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dot is survived by her children: Virgil Rodgers and wife Sharon of Louisville, Dianne Hatcher and husband David of Philadelphia, Mississippi, and Sherry Suttle and husband Rusty of Noxapater. One of her greatest joys was being “Meme” to her eight grandchildren: Jenni (Bruce) Lee, Leigh Ann (William) White, Justin (Melanie) Rodgers, Josh (Natalie) Hatcher, Becky (Russell) Hamilton, Lindsey (Charlie Mac) Joiner, Missy (Brandon) Sherwood, and Paul David (Ashley) Hatcher; as well as her 21 great-grandchildren. Dot is also survived by her sister Patsy Thrash and two sisters-in-law Barbara Hare and Nora Hare. She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy Winston Rodgers, a baby girl Gwendolyn Rodgers, two brothers Lavon and Harold Hare, and two great-grandchildren Lexi Sherwood and Brantley Lee.

Serving as pallbearers are Josh Hatcher, Paul David Hatcher, Justin Rodgers, Russell Hamilton, Charlie Mac Joiner, Bruce Lee, Brandon Sherwood, and William White.

Glenda Ree Quinn Barnes

Mrs. Glenda Ree Quinn Barnes, 90, passed away Wednesday May 12, 2021 after a lengthy illness at her home in Noxapater, MS with two of her children at her bedside. Graveside services will be held at the Methodist Cemetery in Noxapater, MS on Saturday, May 22nd at 11am with Reverend Tom Potter officiating. Pallbearers are Jeffrey Earl Barnes, Gary Thomas Barnes, Bobby Gibbs, Carlos Camacho, Cameron Gibbs, and Connor Gibbs. Glenda Ree was born April 4, 1931 in Noxapater, MS to Thomas Leonard Quinn and Mazie Berniece Taylor Quinn. She graduated from Noxapater High School, and then attended East Central Community College. She did not complete her degree because she chose to marry the love of her life and become a stay at home mother to her four children. She lived most of her life in Alexandria, LA before returning to her hometown in June 1998 where her husband, Billy S. Barnes, retired. Although she lived most of her life in the aforementioned places, she did have to live in another country for a period of a couple of years. Glenda Ree, with much trepidation, agreed to move with her children to Guatemala City, Guatemala in the late 60’s for her husband’s US AID Agricultural specialist job. Even though this was a daunting and scary decision, as usual she made a warm, safe and comfortable home for her husband and children. She adapted fairly quickly to a foreign land and even learned to speak some Spanish. She discovered the Guatemalan people had a love and talent for carving wooden pieces of art and she quickly started a unique collection. 

One of Glenda Ree’s greatest challenges of her life was to accompany her husband to Seattle, Washington to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center where he was to receive a bone marrow transplant. In 1996, Glenda Ree, accompanied by her wonderful sister-in-law and brother (Tenie and Doug Quinn) helped her husband survive this arduous procedure and even harder recovery period. These three nurturing and caring people gave Glenda Ree’s husband 22 more years of life and without them the outcome may not have been as positive.

After her husband retired, they built their dream home on their land west of Noxapater where she indulged in full force her deep love of landscape gardening and horticulture. Her other hobbies included traveling to the Western United States with her husband and family and decorating her new home with the goal of providing a beautiful and comfortable setting for her loved ones. To help her accomplish this goal of creating a beautiful home she indulged in her love of shopping. She found many furnishings and objects of art to make the perfect home.

Glenda Ree Quinn Barnes is survived by her four children and her eleven grandchildren. Her children are: Jeffrey Earl Barnes (Nancy) of Houston, Texas, and their children Paul (Maria) and Sean; Gary Thomas Barnes, M.D. of Noxapater, Mississippi, and his children Corey and Delaney; Karen Barnes Gibbs (Bobby) of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and their children Kelsey, Cameron, and Connor; and Julie Barnes Camacho (Carlos) of the Woodlands, Texas, and their children Sabrina, Quentin, William, and Cathy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Leonard Quinn and Mazie Berniece Taylor Quinn, and a brother Kenneth Douglas Quinn.

Rosiemary Smith

Darlene Moody

Mrs. Linda Darlene Moody, 66, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Winston Medical Center. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, May 14th, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev. Trent Jaudon officiating. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Moody was born August 21, 1954, in Tennessee. She was a homemaker and a member of South Louisville Baptist Church. Her greatest joy was taking care of her family and her precious grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for all the family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen Hammonds; her father, Ed Scott; her step-mother, Jan Scott; a sister, Sheila Kay Graves; and two brothers, Edward Joe Scott and Richard Allen Scott.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Moody of Louisville; two daughters, Heather, (Ryan) Gilmer and Kimberly Moody, both of Louisville; a son David Moody of Louisville; sisters, Kathy Scott of Chicago, IL, and Donna Scott of Memphis, TN; and three grandchildren, Sam Gilmer, Sydney Kate Gilmer, and Wyatt Moody.

Beatrice Presley

Mrs. Beatrice Laverne Presley, 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, May 14th, at Good Hope Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike Ingram and Rev. Jason Gross officiating. Visitation will be Friday at Good Hope Baptist Church from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Interment will be in Good Hope Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Presley was born on March 16, 1934, South Holland, IL. She was a homemaker and a seamstress who loved to sew for her family. She made wedding dresses for all three daughters. She was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir as long as she was able.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Presley, Sr.; her parents, Henry and Agnes Hoeksema; her brother, Carl Hoeksema; and her in-laws, Pete Jansma, Syble (Carter) Ferguson, Bonnie (Howard) Waddell, and Morris Presley.

Mrs. Presley is survived by three daughters, Karen (Danny) Trosper of Louisville, Bonnie (Chris) Creekmore of Louisville, and Nancy (Tony) Cooper of Cumming, GA; a son, Johnny (Beth) Presley of Water Valley, MS; brothers, Harold (Theone) Hoeksema, Henry (Joyce) Hoeksema, and John (Judy) Hoeksema; a sister, Joyce Jansma; sister-in-law, Sylvia Hoeksema; grandchildren, Everett (Megan) Presley, Paul (Katrina) Trosper, Rachel (Heath) Robertson, Tressa (Brandon) McLeod, Jessica (Jacob) Robbins, Jonathan (Shelby) Creekmore, Katelyn Cooper, and Trevor Cooper; great grandchildren, Gabriel Trosper, Caleb Trosper, Holden Robertson, Carson Robbins, Callan Robertson, Colton Robbins, Amelia McLeod, Carly Robbins, Hendrik Presley, Caden Robbins, and Camille Robbins; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Paul Johnson Wood, Sr.

Mr. Paul Johnson Wood, Sr, 82, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 13th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Brad Latham officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul was born March 23, 1939, in Louisville, MS, to Samuel and Beryl Gillett Wood. He was a 1957 graduate of Louisville High School, and a 1961 graduate of Delta State University, where he attended on a baseball scholarship. After college, he was the head coach for the Louisville High School Wildcats football team. He received his Masters degree in Education from Mississippi State University in 1972, and helped establish the first regional health department office in Starkville. Paul served in the Mississippi National Guard and retired in 1982 with the rank of Colonel. He then served as the administrator of Winston County Hospital, Grenada Lake Medical Center, and the Choctaw County Hospital. He was a member of First Methodist Church of Louisville, and attended Crape Creek Baptist Church near Stewart, MS. He was an avid bird hunter and horseman, and trained bird dogs and held field trials. Paul’s passion was his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Mills Wood; his parents; a brother, Douglas Wood; and his son, Paul Johnson “Jay” Wood, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Burton Wood of Louisville; his step-children, Joey (Cynthia) Hood of Ackerman and Rene (Dr. Gene) Cathey of Ocean Springs, MS; his grandchildren, Samantha Wood (Pete) Webb and Bailey Wood, Jonah and Owen Hood, Macey Busby, Bryce Busby, and Mary Jane Cathey; his brother, Harris (Barbara) Wood of Louisville; his step-grandchild, Kyle (Lara) Higginbotham; his great grandchildren, Paul Hudson Webb and Josie Grey Webb; step- great grandchildren, Lake and Jett Higginbotham; a nephew, Patrick Wood; and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Knight Nabers.

Lora Lee Holland

Mrs. Lora Lee Holland, 102, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, May 7, 2021 at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville, MS. A funeral service is planned for Monday, May 10, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Macon, MS with Dr. Jeff Holland and Bro. Bill Ross officiating her Celebration of Life. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until service time at the church. Lora was born in Calhoun City, MS on August 4, 1918. She graduated from Calhoun City school where she was an outstanding basketball player. She attended East Mississippi Junior College but soon left to marry her beloved H. O. Holland. She worked at various jobs throughout her adult life and retired in 1982 from Junior Food Mart in Macon. She lived in Louisville, MS until 1970 when they moved to Macon, Mississippi. She resided in Macon until 2018 when she moved to Winston County Medical Center Nursing Home, Louisville and lived until her death. She worshipped and served at Calvary Baptist Church while in Macon. One of her favorite ministries at Calvary was a greeting card service. She mailed thousands of cards to friends and fellow church members to encourage and uplift them. She loved to sing, had a beautiful alto voice and was a dedicated choir member at Calvary. She and Mr. Holland prepared the Lord’s Supper for years. She was a loving Jesus follower and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Lora is preceded in death by her parents; George and Estelle Lee; by her husband of over 57 years, H.O. Holland, Sr; and by four of her siblings: Marie Goforth of Memphis, TN; Lillian Thomas of Water Valley, MS; Helen White of West Point, MS; and Wanda Harrelson of Memphis, TN.

Mrs. Holland is survived by two sons: H.O. (Linda) Holland of Pascagoula, MS, and Kenny (Linda) Holland of Eupora, MS; one sister: Nellie Yelverton of Memphis, TN; one brother: G.C. Lee, Jr. of Hendersonville, TN. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jeff, Kevin, Ken, and Robin Holland, Tracey Lajoie, (Jim), and by eight great grandchildren-Connor, Cade, Cassidy, Jackson, Hayes, Ethan, Alyssa Holland, and Evan Lajoie.

Nolan Riley Norris

Graveside services for Nolan Riley Norris will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, May 9, 2021 at Union City Cemetery. Bro. Matt Mohering will officiate. Nolan, age 2, passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Larry Burton

Mr. Larry Clarence Burton, 60, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, in Weir, MS. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 9th, at Crape Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, near Stewart, MS, with Rev. Terry Corley and Rev. Brad Latham officiating. Larry was born March 23, 1961, in Ackerman, MS. He graduated from Hernando High School, and attended Northeast Community College. Larry was a mechanic by trade and owned and operated several businesses in Louisville and Ackerman. Most recently, he raised poultry and cattle on his farm near Weir, MS, and was well known for his produce and grew and sold for several years. He was preceded in death by his father, L. C. Burton, and his mother, Norma Ruth Henning Gregg.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Prewitt Burton of Weir, MS; his sisters, Jane (Paul) Wood of Louisville, and Nancy (Mike) Nail of Stewart, MS; brothers, David (Sonrisa) Burton of Brandon, MS, Ron Gregg of Grenada, and Perry (Shauna) Gregg of Senatobia, MS; and special cousins, Barbara Threet and Dewayne Henning.

June Watson Woodruff

Mrs. June Anne Watson Woodruff, 72, passed away on May 5, 2021, in Coral Springs, FL. She received her Masters degree in English at the University of Southern Mississippi, and worked as a supervisor in apartment management.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen and George P. Watson, Jr.

She is survived by her brother, George P. Watson, III, of Louisville; and a nephew, Pate Watson.

James W. Spears

Mr. James Wallace “J.W.” Spears, 89 passed away on May 6, 2021, at his home in Brandon, MS. J.W. was born February 15, 1932, in Neshoba County. He was the owner and operator of Spears Barber Shop for 50 years, and he was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Brandon. He was an Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. J.W. enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as tending to his garden. He was preceded in death by one son, Dave Spears; his parents, Lora Icy Spears and James Clinton Spears; and his siblings, Gladys, Faye, Jay, and Edley.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Carr Spears of Brandon, MS; his daughter, Pam (Mike) Broadway of Brandon, MS; one son, Jim Spears of Brandon, MS; his sister, Gertie Blackmon of D’lo, MS; 4 grandchildren, Zachary Spears, Joshua Broadway, Joseph Broadway, and Whitney Spann; and 7 great grandchildren.

Wade D. Henson

Wade D. Henson, 83, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at St. Dominic Hospital, in Jackson, MS. Mr. Henson was born May 23, 1937, in Choctaw County, MS, to Telmon and Ruby (McHan) Henson. He was an educator and coach for 10 years, and a retired business owner for 50 years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021, 2:00 p.m., at Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Mark Mayo officiating. Burial will follow at Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. till service time at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Attending pallbearers will be Ronny Wayne Prewitt, David Vaughn, Bill Wade, Ronnie Joe Prewitt, Adam Boggan, Doug Moore, Woody Vowell, and Dan Melton. Honorary pallbearers are C.A. Mr. Henson is survived by his wife, Patricia (Prewitt) Henson of Weir, MS; 1 son, Johnny(Laila) Henson of Weir, MS; 2 daughters, Suzanne(Barry) Kelley of Madison, MS, Tammy(Robert) Toombs of Ackerman, MS; and 1 sister, Shirley(Bobby) Prewitt of Weir, MS. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Kate Henson, Jensen(Caleb) Vasquez, Kyle(Brooke) Henson, Laiken(Jon) Moore, Laura Ann(Davis) Edwards, Makenzie Toombs, Mary Grace Kelley, Landon Toombs, Karlee Beth Kelley, and Jeremiah Kelley; and 4 great-grandchildren, Sofia Vasquez, Alexandra Vasquez, Ruby Kingery, and Oren Kingery.

Mr. Henson was preceded in death by his parents, and 1 brother, Billy Kent Henson.

Mrs. Pearlean Yarbrough McReynolds, 73, of Louisville, MS., passed on Monday, May 3, 2021, at the Louisville Health Care Center, Louisville, MS. She was born to the Parents, of Henry Miller and Isabella Yarbrough. She was a Retired Educator from the Louisville Public Schools and a Loyal Alumna from Alcorn State University. 

She was preceded in death by her, parents, Henry and Isabella Miller, Three Brothers; Henry Lee Yarbrough, Willie Lee Yarbrough(Arlexis), and Troy Yarbrough (Ruthie),; Sisters, Mae Ellen Yarbrough and Odessa Ann Ransom, Special Cousin/Sister. Also, preceded by a number of In-Laws.
