Mr. Don Ray Thompson, 89, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 23rd, at Enon Baptist Church, with Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 P.M. Wednesday until service time at the church. Interment will be in Enon Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Don was born April 30, 1933, in Jackson, MS. He graduated from Central High School in Jackson. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy immediately after graduation and served from 1952 thru 1956. After his service, he attended Mississippi State University, Hinds Junior College, and graduated from Millsaps College in 1961. While he was attending college in 1956, he married Joyce Woodruff of Louisville, MS. His career was with the National Park Service, having worked in parks in Florida, Virginia, Minnesota, and Mississippi. His last assignment was as District Superintendent of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Frank Thompson, his mother, Lula Harrison Thompson; a brother, Frances Thompson, a sister, Ellen Meadows, and a special aunt, Maude Beauchamp.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Woodruff Thompson of Tupelo, MS; a son, David Lance (Mitzi) Thompson of Tupelo, MS; a daughter, Donna Lynn (Bobby) Whitlock of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren, Amanda Richards, Austin Whitlock, and Amy Whitlock, all of Spotsylvania, VA and Leah Beth Kenney and David Ray Thompson, both of Tupelo; and four great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
