Mr. Gillett, 57, died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Winston Medical Center in Louisville.
He was born to Richard and Norine Gillett in Chicago, IL. During his early childhood, he used Wrigley Field as his playground, it became the reason for his love of sports. Roger moved to Mississippi at the age of six and as a young teenager to the Lobutcha Community of Winston County with a new family, the Taylor’s; Fred and Arrietta Taylor, along with Granny Spears, raised Roger as their son. Roger met his future wife, Phyllis Nowell while living with the Taylor’s. Roger and Phyllis had two children, Stephanie and Jeremiah, who were the pride and joy of their lives and had one granddaughter, Zoey, who was the center of Roger’s life. His most cherish thing in life was spending time with his children and granddaughter and he passed along his love of baseball, fishing and motorcycles to them. Roger was also a member of a bigger family, Taylor Machine Works, where he worked for 30 years and loved the people he worked with.
He was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Arrietta Taylor, Granny Spears and Richard Gillett; brothers, Jerry “Big Red” Taylor, Robert Gillett and Randy Gillett and stepfather, Jim Purgason.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Stephanie and Jeremiah; granddaughter, Zoey; mother, Norine Purgason; sisters, Joanne (Lanoy) Adcock, Jannette Nelson and Anita Edwards-Gillett; sister-in-law, Monica Taylor; brothers Richard Gillett and Rodney Gillett and a host of nieces, nephews and their families.
