Darrell Wayne Haggard

Darrell Wayne Haggard, 61, passed away at the University of Mississippi Medical Center following a sudden illness on June 2, 2022. Wayne was born on June 3, 1960, in Macon, Mississippi, to parents Darrell Latimer and Mae Meeks Haggard and to older sibling Patsy. In 1963, his younger brother John Thomas was born. Wayne was a resident of Macon, MS, for the first twelve years of his life where he attended First Baptist Church; his family moved to their permanent home in the Ellison Ridge Community in 1972 where he became a member of Ellison Ridge Baptist Church. Wayne was a 1978 Louisville High School graduate. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country for six years.

He is survived by his mother, Mae Haggard of Louisville, MS; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Haggard Foley and David Foley of Madison, MS; nephew, Matthew Connor Foley of Madison, MS; and many friends and extended family members throughout the South.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father Darrell Latimer Haggard and brother John Thomas Haggard.

Wayne was known for his sense of humor and outspoken political views, as well as for his dependability and loyalty to friends and family. For instance, Wayne made time to visit friends who were ill or residing in area nursing homes. There were no strangers in Wayne’s world; there were only friends he had not yet met. He struck up conversations with people everywhere he went. Wayne loved going to the theater to watch the latest movies and held an extensive personal movie library that he would loan to fortunate friends and family, and he never forgot who needed to return his movies. No one had a softer heart regarding animals than Wayne; he exhibited an unusual knack for domesticating feral cats. With no children of his own, he immensely enjoyed his role as one of the “bachelor uncles” to his nephew Connor.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 5th, at 2:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Billy Higginbotham officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 4th, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Sardis Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sardis Cemetery Fund, c/o Glenda Thomas, 215 Thomas Road, Louisville, MS, 39339.
