James M. Shumaker

Mr. James M. Shumaker, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, with Rev. Hank Dempsey officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Shumaker was born on July 4, 1939, to Oakley N. and Ida Dempsey Shumaker. He retired from serving as a Game Warden of Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries, and Parks in Oktibbeha County after 20 years. Before becoming a Mississippi Game Warden he spent his time hauling pulpwood for many years.

James is survived by his daughter, Lynn Brigance and husband, Tim; and two sons, Eddie Shumaker and wife, Johnice; and Edward Shumaker all of Pheba, Mississippi; and his sister, Barbara Ann Ledbetter and husband, Bud of Texas. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Chad McClatchey and wife, Christie, Ashley McClatchey, Kimberly White and husband, Austin, Dana Roush and husband, Daniel, Billy Clark, III and wife, Amy, Jessica McDaniel and husband, Mitch, Jonathan Blansett, Preston Shumaker, and Eli Cook; his thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, Rivers Aiden Fletcher. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances Shumaker; and his daughter, Loretta Blansett.

Serving as pallbearers will be Robby Blade, Jonathan Blansett, Michael Craddock, Stephen Edwards, Daniel Fletcher, Ben McCurry, Mitch McDaniel, Daniel Roush, Preston Shumaker, Austin Warren, and Joey Windfield. Memorials may be given to the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 445 Giffin Road, Louisville, MS 39339.

Hilda Everitt Simmons

Mrs. Hilda Everitt Simmons was born October 29, 1929, in Laurel MS, and died August 9, 2018, in Louisville, MS after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 13th, at First Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Childs officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:30 to 6:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home, and Monday from 9:30 until service time at the church. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nancy Childress Starnes

Mrs. Nancy Carol Childress Starnes, 76, passed away on Thursday,August 9, 2018, at her home in Ackerman, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 11th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Starnes was born July 6, 1942, in Louisville, MS, to Pearl Beard and William P. Childress. She was a graduate of Louisville High School and was a retired secretary with the Choctaw County Welfare Department. She was a member of Chester Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marie Fuller; and five brothers, Pharist Childress, George Childress, William Henry Childress, Troy Childress, and Tommy Walter Childress.

Mrs. Starnes is survived by her husband, Bill Starnes of Ackerman; and a sister, Lillie Mae Flake of Louisville, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Robby Fuller, Danny Fuller, Wayne Childress, Mike Childress, Chris Childress, and Keith Flake.

Rex was born November 10, 1959, to Troy Lee and Betty Jo Fulton Taylor. He enjoyed cooking and deer hunting, and he dearly loved his dog, Zena.

Rex is survived by his father and step-mother, Troy Lee and Brenda Taylor; his sister, Kim Ming and husband, Keith, all of Louisville; his step-sister, LeeAnne Kilgore and husband, Jason, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; his brother, Chad Taylor of Louisville; and his step-brother, Mark Nowell and wife, Reba, of Ackerman, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo Taylor; his uncle, Ross Fulton; and his grandparents, James and Alice Fulton; and Ervin and Willie Belle Taylor.

Mary Zutha Ray

Mary Zutha Ray, age 89, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Louisville Health Care in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Hinze Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Blanchard officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 11:30 a.m. until 1: 30 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will follow in Hinze Baptist Church Cemetery.

Zutha was born June 25, 1929, to Royal and Virgie McCool Shumaker. She was a member of Hinze Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and working in her yard and her flowers.

Zutha is survived by her husband of 72 years, Garland Ray; and her daughter, Janice Greene and husband, Marion, all of Louisville. Also left to mourn her passing is her sister, Maudie Anthony; and her brother, Ed Shumaker and wife, Fran. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her granddaughter, Susan Byrd and husband, Pat; as well as her two great-grandchildren, Laurie and Michael Byrd. She was preceded in death by her parents; and four siblings, Horace Shumaker, Mildred Steed, Melva Burchfield, and Mavis Whittington.

Serving as pallbearers are Ricky Anthony, Joey Ray, Marcus Ray, Scott Ray, Jeff Shumaker, and Michael Shumaker. Memorials in honor of Zutha may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tribute Program, P. O. Box 1000 Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Prentice Eugene Ray

Prentice Eugene Ray, 64, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2018, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Rev. Gerald Butler officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12:00 p.m. until service time at Nowell Massey Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Butler Cemetery in Noxubee County.

Mr. Ray was born on November 22, 1953, to Alfred and Mavis Franklin Ray. He answered the call of his country by serving in the Mississippi National Guard.

Prentice is survived by his daughter, April Burton, of Macon, Georgia; his sister, Mary Higginbotham, of Noxapater, Mississippi; and his four granddaughters: Selena Burton, Elizabeth Atkinson, Courtnie Burton, and Breanna Burton. Prentice also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Monroe Ray and David Ray.

Pallbearers will be James Higginbotham, Brian Rogers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. Ray may be given to Nowell Massey Funeral Home to help defray funeral expenses.

Bethany Marie White

Bethany Marie White, age 20, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018, in Attala County.  Funeral services will be 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2018, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Denny Brown and Rev. Sean Greer officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi.  Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bethany was born October 19, 1997, in Starkville, Mississippi, to Kenny and Kelli Fulcher White.  She was a member of Revival Center Ministries.  Bethany dearly loved her brothers; was a protector of animals; and enjoyed watching movies and her brothers play baseball. She also enjoyed cooking; painting; writing poems and drawing.

Bethany is survived by her parents, Kenny and Kelli Fulcher White; and her grandparents, Lavern Collier White and Leroy and Martha Fulcher all of Louisville.  She also leaves behind five brothers to mourn her passing:  Noah White and wife, Taylor; Elijah White, who is currently deployed to the Middle East; Gideon White; and the twins, Levi and Luke White; as well as her nephew, Easton White; and her niece, Lanie Grace White.  Bethany is also survived by her “Aunt Mamie”, Brandi Fulcher Sanders; and her uncle, Michael White.  She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Coy White, Jr.

Serving as pallbearers are Noah White, Gideon White, Levi White, Luke White, Jonathan Blaine, Camden Sanders, Isaiah Eiland, and Eric Jones.

Devon Thomas

Devon Thomas, age 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, July 28, 2018 surrounded by his family. Prior to his passing, eloquent monikers could be attached to this patriarch of our family: Husband, Daddy, Paw Paw, sailor, mechanic, and woodsman. However, what is in a name? Devon epitomized a true leader servant of his Savior, nation, and family.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 30, 2018 5 – 8 pm at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Services will be held Tuesday, at 11 am at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Gary Caudill and Rev. Jimmy Collins officiating. Burial will proceed immediately after in the Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Lindel Yates Hartness, age 92, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at her residence in Noxapater, Mississippi. Dorothy Ann “Dot” Miller

Mrs. Dorothy Ann “Dot” Miller, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Louisville, MS on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 27, 2018, at Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery, with Rev. Mike Dowd officiating. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 

Dot was born March 19, 1929, in Winston County, MS. She was a graduate of Ford High School, was a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Guy “Bo” Miller; her parents, John Swinton and Margaret Dempsey; four sisters, Annie Lou “Dude” McGahey, Emmajean Prisock, Ruby Lee Prisock, and Nannie Blair; and a brother, James Dempsey.

Dot is survived by two daughters, Ann Fillingim and Carol Hemphill, both of Louisville; two grandchildren, Brian Fillingim and Kelly Hemphill Haynes; and one great grandchild, Branson Haynes.
