Edgar "Ed" Swain

Mr. Edgar Lamar “Ed” Swain, 73, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. on Tuesday, July 18th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Pastor Travis Byars officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 P.M. until service time at Porter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Mars Hill Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swain was born February 25, 1944, in Rayville, LA. Ed was the long time owner of Swain Printing in Louisville. He was member of the Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Clayborne Eugene Swain; and a brother, Carl Swain.

Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Kea Swain; a daughter, Eva Sullivan and her husband, Pat; four sisters, Lucy Pettit, Inez Smithey, Glenda Cox, and Marlene Harrell; three brothers, Tommy Swain, Rodney Swain, and Benny Swain; and two grandchildren, Clark Sullivan and Kayla-Kea Duran. Mary Eleanor (Davis) Land

Mary Eleanor (Davis) Land, age 78, died July 6th, 2017, in Tupelo, MS. The cause of death was a stroke. Born October 23, 1938 in Houston, TX, she lived in California and Nevada, before settling in Montgomery, TX with her husband Dr. Robert Land. There will be no formal services.

Mary graduated from Louisville High School in Louisville, MS, in 1956, and attended Mississippi State University. In college, she was a MSU majorette, was honored on the homecoming court, and was selected as a Beauty in the 1958 Reveille. Her beauty was inside and out, and she was loved dearly by her husband and family.

Mary was a flight attendant for Braniff Airways and over the course of her life worked for five major airlines. She also worked as the manager of the press room for the Apollo missions at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX and later handled press releases as a member of Senator John Tower’s staff in Washington D.C. In 2005, she retired from Alaska Airlines.

Mary was a beloved wife and cherished mother. She lived life to the fullest and was an avid traveler, a film buff, and a lover of all music. She will be especially remembered for her good Christian heart, her kindness and generosity to others and animals, her quick wit, and her spirit of adventure.
Preceeded in death by her dear mother, Viola (Miller) Turnipseed. Survivors include: Her husband, Dr. Robert Land. Her sister, Janette Thaxton. Her children, Michelle and Mike Deal, Col. (retired) Thomas Miller, Dirk and Mindy Miller.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Hospital, Mississippi State University, or a charity of choice, in loving memory of Mary Eleanor Land.

Mr. Paul Edward Chunn, 65, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at his residence in Louisville, Mississippi.

Paul was born October 8, 1951, in Attala County, Mississippi, to Luscious and Lois Miles Chunn. He was of the apostolic faith; and he worked in the Maintenance Department on an off-shore rig.

Ms. Mildred Jones Windham

Ms. Mildred Jones Windham, 83, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at her residence in the Plattsburg Community. Graveside services and interment will be Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at Indian Springs Cemetery with Rev. Lawrence Poole officiating. Mildred was born March 19, 1934, in Winston County, Mississippi, to Willie Lee and Flora Quinn Jones. She was a member of Indian Springs Assembly of God Church; she loved working in her vegetable gardens and fishing.

Mildred is survived by a daughter, Tammy Windham; and a son, Willie Windham and wife, Lisa, all of Noxapater. One of her greatest joys was being “Granny” to her four grandchildren: Buddy Windham and wife, Daisha; Kari Windham; Mildred Perez; and Bobbie Lee Windham; as well as to her nine great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Windham; her son, David Windham; her parents; two brothers, Jesse Lee Jones and Boe Jones; and three sisters, Mary Ann Howard; Irene Howard; and Rosie Hatley.

Juanice S. Norris

Ms. Juanice Stevenson Norris, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be Friday, July 7, 2017, at Nowell Massey Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7 p.m. as well as Saturday from 2 p.m. until service time. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 3 p.m. in the Nowell Massey Funeral Chapel with Mr. Larry Norris officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Presbyterian Cemetery in McCool, Mississippi.

Juanice was born December 30, 1929, in Choctaw County, Mississippi, to Alvy and Kitty Whitmire Stevenson. She was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church; a 1947 graduate of Weir High School; and a 1951 graduate of Mississippi State College where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. For more than 10 years, she was an Assistant Secretary to the Treasury Supervisor at Depositors Savings in Jackson, Mississippi. Later she was employed at the YMCA in Vicksburg, Mississippi; Mississippi State University; and with Phillip’s Petroleum in Borger, Texas, and Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Juanice is survived by a son, Conley Cox, Jr., of Little Rock, Arkansas; a niece, Brenda Patterson and husband, Bernie, of Homestead, Florida; numerous cousins who loved each other like brothers and sisters; and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Katie Cox Henderson of Conway, Arkansas; and Emily Cox also of Little Rock. Juanice was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Norris and Conley Cox, Sr.; her parents; two brothers, Ralph and Willard Stevenson; and an infant sister, Maxine Stevenson.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jarrod Blair, Lee Blair, Dr. C. L. Davidson, Dr. James R. Davidson, Dr. Max Whitmire Davidson, and Jaron Henderson. Billie Jean Young

Mrs. Billie Jean Young, 82, died July 2, 2017, at her home in Paris, TN. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Thursday, July 6th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Billy Bowie officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at Porter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Cedarlawn Cemetery in Philadelphia, MS. 

Billie stared work at an early age. Her first job was at a soda fountain, her next job was a waitress, and after that she worked at a plant making plastics. She fell in love and got married at 18, and had three boys. She was a fantastic mother who loved making homemade breads, donuts, and cookies for her boys. Her favorite time of the year was the holidays. It was then that she used her love of baking to make rum balls and special cookies and anything to do with the holiday season. During the Christmas holidays, she would let the boys hang candy canes from the Christmas tree and then let each one take a candy cane off the tree and have it every night until Christmas. She just loved doing little things to make it special. Billie never met a stranger. She always loved talking to everyone, even after she move back to Tennessee from Louisville, MS. After moving back, she renewed her friendship with the friends that she had worked with at the plant. They got together once a week, on Wednesdays, having lunch and talking about old times. They just had a special bond that they continue to share together. Her family meant the world to her. She had seven sisters and one brother, three sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved them all very much and any time she got to spend with them meant everything to her. Billie loved to play softball, where she excelled as a pitcher and batter. She enjoyed making ceramics and painted all of them by hand. She could talk for hours; and especially enjoyed her talks with her sister-in-law, Mildred Calvert, who she talked to every day. She shared the love of telling jokes with her husband of 50+ years, Simon. They both loved to have fun. 

Billie was preceded in death by her husband, Simon T. Young; her parents, Clifton and Marie Everett; and sisters, Kathleen Roberts, Jackie Pace, Bernice Survant, Betty Beck, and Faye Nault. She is survived by three sons, Thomas C. Young of Altamonte Springs, FL, Richard M. (Allison) Young of Tyler, TX, and Barry L. Young of Paris, TN; a sister, Marie Williams; two brothers, Bud Everett and Ray Woodall; grandchildren: Jason Brown, Chris Young, Cameron Young, Monica Brogdon, Brook Hollingsworth, and Brittney Young; several great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Patricia Hope Quinton Farris

Patricia Hope Quinton Farris, affectionately known as “Honey” to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Mississippi Baptist Hospital at the age of 76.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Inez and Truman Quinton. 

Honey is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Joe P. Farris; her sons, Everett Watkins of Key West, Florida and Thad Watkins (Anne Cassell); grandsons, Thad Jr. and Allen, all of Hoover, Alabama. She is also survived by her daughter, Cindy Crochet of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Chelsea and Parker; daughter, Missy Nettles (Jamey); grandchildren, Kate, Joshua, Jack and Abby of Athens, Alabama. Patricia is also survived by her sister, Martha Graham of Decatur, MS and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Patricia grew up in Jackson, MS, attended Murrah High School, and continued her studies at Mississippi College for Women, then graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in English.

Dorothy Jean Cox

Dorothy Jean Cox, 77, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 30, 2017, at her
daughter's residence in Macon, MS. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M., with funeral services to follow at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 2, at Doty Springs Baptist Church in Ethel, MS, with Rev. Tony Fortenberry officiating. Interment will follow in Doty Springs Cemetery.

Ms. Cox was born August 12, 1939, to George Preston and Ruby Hodge McCool. She was a member of Doty Springs Baptist Church.

There was nothing in this world that Dorothy loved more than her family. She is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Gaylord and husband, Richard, of Macon, and Samantha Booth, of Meridian. Dorothy is also survived by two sisters, Ruthie Leonard, and Nancie Bradford and husband, Johnny. Also left to mourn the passing of their “MawMaw” are six grandchildren, Brook Thrash and husband Alex, Courtney and Sara Gaylord; and Tyler Cox, Kaitlyn Allgood and husband Todd; Alley Hudall and husband Logan; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Cailee and Bud Thrash; Cohen and Layden Cox; Dawson and Daxton Allgood. She was preceded in death by one daughter Phyllis Saxton Morgan, husband Larry Cox, her parents; two sisters, Daisy Algood and Annie Innabnit; and six brothers: Doris, Clifton, Charlie, Robert, Keith and Darl Edward McCool.

Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Bradford, Randy Edwards, Billy McCool, Mike McCool. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Doty Springs Baptist Church.

Sammy Charles “Odie” Massey

Mr. Sammy Charles “Odie” Massey, 64, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Winston Medical Center in Louisville, Mississippi.  Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 p.m. until service time at Nowell Massey Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Rural Hill Cemetery.

Sammy Charles, a lifelong resident of the Lobutcha community in Winston County, was born September 11, 1952, to Louis and Daisy Shumaker Massey in Winston County.  He loved his job as a heavy equipment operator and was retired from District 1 of Winston County.  He loved to hunt, fish, and garden; and he was a big fan of Merle Haggard.

Mr. Massey is survived by his daughter, Crystal Massey; his sister, Carol Coats of Louisville; and his brother, Wendel Massey and wife, Carol, of McCool, Mississippi.  Odie was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Valerie Massey; and his brother-in-law, Marshall Coats.
