Shirley Weaver Ray

Shirley Weaver Ray, age 79 was born September 10, 1943, and passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Choctaw County Medical Center in Ackerman, MS. 

Shirley worked for 28 years at Georgia Pacific in Louisville, MS, as a secretary. Afterwards, she worked 10 years for Dr. Raymond Orgler, Sr. at Starkville, Mississippi and Louisville, Mississippi as his secretary.

She loved attending church, going to Eastern Star, reading, playing dominos, working outside, and being with her family.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Bertha King; three sisters, Judy Caviness of California, Betty King of Texas, Kathy Kellum of Calhoun City, MS; and her former husband, Rich Weaver of Ackerman, MS.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie B. “Buck” Ray, Jr. of Ackerman, MS; one son, William Tim “Billy Tim” Platt and friend, Margaret Jones, of Pennsylvania; two daughters, Lynelle (Smokey) Miles of Ackerman, MS, and Alicia (Jerry) Peters of Starkville, MS; two step-daughters, Paula (Michael) Moore of Ackerman, MS, and Pam (Steve) Sullivan of Preston, MS; one brother, William Roy (Penny) King of Tampa, FL; two grandsons, William Timothy, Jr. (Kyira) Platt of Levelland, TX, and Robert Collins of Sturgis, MS; one step-grandson, Brady (Angel) Clay of Maben, MS; two step-granddaughters, Stephanie (Trey) Hardin of Calhoun City, MS, Kristin (Justin) Hendricks of Preston, MS; great-grandchildren, Eilah Rain Platt, Ethyn Matthew Platt, Eilana Grace Platt of Levelland, TX, Aliza Collins of Mathiston, MS; step-great-grandchildren, Owen Hardin, Oakley Hardin, and Ava Burk Hardin of Calhoun City, MS, Kasey Clay of Ackerman, MS, Millie June Clay of Maben, MS, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Patricia Elizabeth Powell Woolington

Patricia Elizabeth Powell Woolington, 85, of Starkville, Mississippi, went home to be with her LORD and Savior JESUS CHRIST on 27 Aug 2023.

Pat was born 3 Oct 1937 to Elyria and Dudley Powell in Biloxi, Mississippi, the youngest and only girl of 4 children. She grew up living next door to her maternal grandparents in a working-class neighborhood. Her mother was a registered nurse and her father owned J D Powell Auto Body Works on Caillavet Street. All the Powell males were also skilled auto mechanics.

Pat enjoyed afternoons at Biloxi beach as well as Ramsey Springs, north of Biloxi. Through a local Methodist church, Pat met an airman from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Jim Woolington, who had recently returned from Korea. Her parents gave permission for their 16-year-old daughter to marry Jim, under the stipulation that she finish high school. They married 8 Aug1954 in Biloxi. Pat attended Monticello (Illinois) High School in Jim's hometown during the 1954-1955 School year, then graduated May 1956 from Hattiesburg High School, while her husband attending the Mississippi Southern College (University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg campus).

Pat was a stay-at-home mother who “loved those 26 years as a total homemaker. It was exactly what I wanted to do. And I am grateful that I had the freedom to stay at home.” She took classes and demonstrated her creativity in cake decorating, ceramics, needlepoint, and making clothes for herself and her children. For two years, she coached the Starkville Swim team as well as taught Red Cross swimming lessons to handicapped children. She served as a member of the Oktibbeha County Hospital auxiliary and was a Girl Scouts troop leader while her girls were involved.

After her youngest started junior high school, Pat went to college in 1981. Because of the difficult transition to college life as a mid-life freshman, she founded the Mississippi State University (MSU) Association of Non-Traditional Students in 1983 to assist others navigate campus life. Pat graduated magna cum laude from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and was the first person to complete a certification in women’s studies at MSU in 1986. She continued her education as an undergraduate assistant while she earned a Master of Educational Psychology in 1987. Pat taught sociology at MSU, at East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew, and at Columbus (Mississippi) Air Force Base until her husband got sick in 2001.

Pat is survived by the children the LORD entrusted to her care: Jeanne (Scott) Finley of Augusta, GA, Randy (Leslie) Woolington of Sturgis, MS, and Robin (Kirk) Skinner of Dade City, FL. In addition to her children, she has seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a pre-born son, husband Jim, son Chris, and three brothers: Jimmy Powell, Tommy Powell, and Billy Powell.

A private graveside service will be held.

John Allen Smith, Sr.

John Allen Smith, Sr. of Starkville, MS, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Mr. Smith was born on April 29, 1943, in Choctaw County, MS, to Hubert Allen and Maurine (Erwin) Smith. He was 80 years old. Mr. Smith was a retired welder and worked in this position for 30 years for Babcock and Wilcox in West Point, MS. He was a member of Adaton Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 4:00PM, at Adaton Baptist Church near Starkville, MS. Visitation will precede the services beginning at 2:30PM until service time at Adaton Baptist Church near Starkville, MS.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sandra Cothran Smith of Starkville, MS, two sons, Johnny Smith (Laura) of Starkville, MS and Ronald Smith (Susan) of Clinton, MS, two daughters, April Payne (David) of Mathiston, MS and Robin Bates (Adam) of Caledonia, MS, two sisters, Rose Burton of Ackerman, MS and Agnes Hobson of Pearl, MS, and three brothers, Eckle Smith, Eddie Smith, and Jimmy Smith, all of Mathiston, MS. Mr. Smith is also survived by ten grandchildren: Kaylan Thompson, Noah Smith, Madison Smith, Mitchell Smith, Beau Bates, John Thomas Bates, Cooper Bates, Blake Bates, Preston Payne, and Payton Payne, and two great grandchildren: Brady Thompson and Tucker Thompson.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one infant child, Michelle.

Gay Reynolds Jackson

Gay Reynolds Jackson, a dedicated and beloved member of the Louisville community, passed away peacefully at her home in Louisville, MS on August 25, 2023. She was born on December 9, 1936, in Livingston, TN to Opha and Hooper Reynolds.

Throughout her life, Gay left an indelible mark through her various roles. She and her husband, Burgess P. Jackson, were the proud owners and operators of Jackson Auto and Marine for 33 years in Louisville. Their hard work and commitment to excellence allowed them to serve their community with integrity and gain the respect of those they worked with.

A woman of deep faith, Gay was a devoted member of the Louisville Church of Christ. Her spiritual beliefs provided her with comfort and guidance throughout her journey.

Gay cherished time spent with her family above all else. Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. She found immense joy in their company and delighted in witnessing them grow into remarkable individuals. Aside from family gatherings, Gay could often be found outdoors working in her yard, tending to her vibrant flowers and nurturing her garden. This connection to nature brought her tranquility and serenity.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burgess P. Jackson; her parents, and a great grandchild, Emery McCants. She is survived by daughters Brenda Stokes and Debbie Hall along with Debbie's husband Danny. Gay also leaves behind a sister, Carol Lawson, and her husband Ron. Her grandchildren include Skye (Jordan) McCants, B.J. (Kelly) Sullivan, Steven (Kali) Rogers, and Cory (Aubrey) Hall. Gay was also blessed with great-grandchildren Makenzi McCants, Addison McCants, Bella Sullivan, Ryker Sullivan, Jax Rogers, Anna Kate McCants, Ella Grace Hall, and Kenzi Rae Rogers. Additionally, she is survived by a number of nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

The services to honor and celebrate Gay's life will be held at Porter Funeral Home on Sunday, August 27th, at 3:00 P.M. , with Bro. Billy Conn officiating . The visitation will take place on August 27, 2023, from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jordan McCants, B. J. Sullivan, Steven Rogers, Cory Hall, David Coleman, and Chris Coleman.

James L. Weeks

James L. Weeks of Laurel, MS, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at Care Center of Laurel, in Laurel, MS. Mr. Weeks was born on April 24, 1949, in Webster County, MS, to Enon and Christine (Latham) Weeks. He was 74 years old. Mr. Weeks was a retired welder and truck driver.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS.

Mr. Weeks is survived by 1 daughter, Christena Palmer of Starkville, MS; 2 brothers, Bobby Bramlett of Tennessee and Joe Miles of Starkville, MS; 1 sister, Kay Blake of Ackerman, MS; 6 grandchildren; and his best friend, Jeff Box.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Donna Weeks, his parents, and 1 brother, Kim Weeks.

Wyatt Glyn "Buck" Reed

Wyatt Glyn (Buck) Reed, 89, returned to the God from which his spirit came forth on August 21, 2023. While Buck’s earthly body will return to dust, his spirit has returned and taken the hand of his Lord, his God. He will rejoice forever with the saints in the presence of Jesus. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 23 at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Conn and Rev. Mike Dowd officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Whitehall Methodist Church Cemetery in Louisville.

Buck, a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, began his military career in the North Artic at Frobisher Bay, Greenland. He also served in the jungles of Vietnam; in Libya, and completed his military service in Anchorage, Alaska, with many other stops along the way.

Buck was a devout Christian and served his Lord for most of his days. Giving his life to Christ at a very young age, Buck not only learned the Word, but dedicated his life to glorify the Lord. Regardless of his circumstances, Buck Reed never missed an opportunity to witness to others, even up until his last days.

Born the eldest son of Jim and Nettie Smith Reed on June 20, 1934, in the Bond Community of Winston County, Mississippi, Buck was a cornerstone of those who knew him. From a young age of 7, Buck and his mule “Ada” were sought out for their gardening skills, and to his passing day his prowess at growing nearly anything was legendary.

The start of Buck’s family legacy began in 1952 when he enlisted in the Air Force which led him to Sewart Air Force Base in Nashville, Tennessee, where Buck met the love of his life, Dorothy Jones. July 4, 1959, they left Nashville to serve their country all over the world for 22 years, and over the course of 64 years, built a marriage, a family and a legacy that we can only thank God for. He made the world a better place when He put Buck Reed here.

Buck is survived by his devoted wife, Dot Jones Reed, and four sons: Jeff Reed and his wife Pam, Ray Reed and his wife Carol, Boo Reed and his wife Melba, and Nick Reed and his wife Deborah. He will be remembered fondly by his nine cherished grandchildren: Justin Reed and his wife Nikki, Amy Reed Clark and her husband Jordan, Amber Reed Hill and her husband Austin, Raychal Reed Roberts and her husband Jud, Austin Reed, Madelyn Reed Vanlandingham and her husband Bo Jack, Cody Reed and his wife Jordan, and Taylor Skelton and husband Dustin. He is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren: Lake Reed, Emmi Rose Reed, Elle Snow, Eden Snow, Evie Clark, Flay Hill, Boyce Roberts, Ann Marlowe Roberts, Wyatt Reed, Sawyer Reed, and Maddox Skelton. Buck was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Ralph, Jerry, Tarvin and Ray Reed; sisters, June Hodge and Betty Johns; and grandson, Joshua Burkes Reed.

Serving as pallbearers are Justin Reed, Austin Reed, Cody Reed, Jordan Clark, James Love, Bo Jack Vanlandingham, Jud Roberts, and Austin Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Lake Reed, Taylor Conn, Bobby Joe Gregory, Tommy Johns, and Terry Landrum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in honor of Buck be given to the Joshua Burkes Reed Memorial Lineman Scholarship through the EMCC Foundation.

Fredrick Lee "Sonny"

Mr. Fredrick Lee “Sonny” White, 80, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023 after a long and heartfelt life, at his home in Louisville, MS. A funeral mass will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 23rd, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Sonny was born December 1, 1942, in Philadelphia, MS. He was a 1962 graduate of Louisville High School where he excelled in football and won the “All Choctaw Conference” award. As said by his brother Steve White, “He didn’t have a shotgun arm, he had a cannon.” His athletic abilities were also demonstrated through track & field and baseball where “he could hit a baseball a country mile.” Later, he graduated from East Central Community College and served in the Mississippi National Guard. Following his graduation, he brought three beautiful daughters and one son into this world. Sonny received multiple awards including “Best of the Best” for residential builders during his 40 year career in construction serving the entire Mississippi Delta at Fleming Lumber Company in Cleveland, MS.

 

Anyone who has met Sonny would remember his infectious humor and quick witted remarks. He was an undeniable optimist who could always find a reason to be positive. His children will always remember him as the “Diddy” that held onto what he loved and cherished the most.

 

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Naomi Pope and his father, Woodrow Francis White; his daughter, Virginia White; his sister, Nona White Ware; and his step-father, Keith Hardin.

 

Sonny is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jennifer Campbell White of Louisville; two daughters, Margaret White (Ed) Moore of Upperville, VA, and Kathy White (Glenn) Swope of Raleigh, NC; a son, Lee (Vivian) White of Eudora, AR; a brother, Steve (Linda) White of Louisville; and five grandchildren, Charles Moore, Robert Moore, Patrick Fortenberry, Woodson Fortenberry, and Hensley Fortenberry.

Anne Angeline Vowell

Anne Angeline Vowell, 94, passed away Friday, August 18, 2023, at her home in Noxapater, Mississippi. Graveside services and interment will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 20, 2023, at Plattsburg Cemetery in Noxapater with Rev. Dwight Fleming officiating.

Anne was born June 4, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to Sam and Lena Sapienza Lopresto. She enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes. Anne dearly loved and enjoyed spending time with her family. She always enjoyed taking care of them, singing to them, and cooking for her family. Anne was blessed to enjoy five generations of her family.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Rosanne Reynolds and husband, Paul; her brother, Vic (Karen) Lopresto; and her sister, Grace Rubel. One of her greatest joys was being “Nana” to her grandchildren: Greg (Ashley) Reynolds and Carrie (Kevin) Ryals; as well as her seven great-grandchildren: Brittany (Clay) Ralston, Abby Rose Woods, Luke Reynolds, Addie Grace Reynolds, Brynlee Reynolds, Ayla Ryals, and Cooper Ryals. She also leaves behind two great-great-grandchildren: Avery Anne Pierce and Kaylee Belle Ralston; in addition to her loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Vowell; her parents; and her sister, Frances Lopresto.

Nancy Kea Swain

Nancy Kea Swain, a compassionate and dedicated individual who served as the director of nursing at Winston Medical Center, has passed away at the Dogwood Cottage on August 18, 2023. Born on February 17, 1944, in Jonesboro, North Carolina, Nancy leaves behind a legacy of excellence in her field and a deep commitment to helping others.

Nancy's educational journey began at Louisville High School, where she graduated with distinction. She then pursued her passion for nursing and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). This educational foundation provided her with the knowledge and skills she needed to make a significant impact on the lives of countless patients throughout her career.

Throughout her life, Nancy exemplified the qualities of a faithful Christian. She was an active member of the Ackerman Church of Christ and drew inspiration from her faith in all aspects of her life. Even as a young woman, Nancy displayed immense compassion and dedication by assisting her aunt in providing care to the sick and elderly. This early experience set the stage for her future endeavors and instilled within her a sense of purpose to serve those in need.

As the director of nursing at Winston Medical Center, Nancy played a pivotal role in ensuring top-quality care for patients under her supervision. Her professionalism and leadership were evident as she guided and mentored fellow healthcare professionals. Nancy's commitment to excellence and unwavering dedication to the well-being of her patients earned her respect from colleagues and community members alike.

Outside of work, Nancy found joy in spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. Her grandchildren Clark Sullivan and Kayla Kea Sullivan brought immense happiness into her life. Additionally, she cherished the companionship of Mr. Ruger, her loyal four-legged friend.

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband Edgar Lamar Swain and parents Lanny and Edna Kea. They will hold dear memories of their cherished times together and the unwavering love they shared. Nancy's memory will also be cherished by her daughter Eva Swain Sullivan and husband Pat, her sister Lana Rosser, and her brother Randy Kea.

To remember and honor Nancy's life, a visitation will take place on August 19, 2023, at Porter Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will follow at the same location, beginning at 11:00 AM. Nancy will then be laid to rest in Mars Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Nancy Kea Swain's dedication to providing exceptional care to others and her unwavering commitment to her family and faith have touched the lives of many. Her legacy as a compassionate nurse and a loving individual will be remembered fondly by all of those fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in eternal peace.

Hugh Fox McCarty of Ackerman, MS, passed away onMonday, August 14, 2023, at his residence in Ackerman,MS. Hugh was born on August 7, 1964, in Choctaw County, MS, to Zoley and Bertha Nell (Tackett) McCarty. He was 59 years old. Hugh was employed by the Jones College Police Department.

Glen Perry

 Glen Perry, age 46, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2023, in Eupora, Mississippi. He was born on August 25, 1976, to Bobby Dewayne Perry and Terry Scarbrough Pittman.

Glen was originally from Choctaw County. He worked at Hardwire in Louisville. He loved looking for Indian artifacts and arrowheads. He attended Calvary Chapel in Eupora. Glen applied his favorite verse of Colossians 3:2 to his life. It reads, “Set your affections on things above, not things on earth.” He especially loved the time spent with his family and nephews.

Mr. Perry is survived by his mother, Terry Pittman (Robert) of Eupora, Mississippi; one sister, Laila Henson (Johnny) of Weir; two nephews, Kyle Bramlett (Allison) of Tupelo, Jacob Bramlett of Weir; two great nephews, Jonah, and Ezra Bramlett, both of Tupelo.

A Memorial visitation and service will be held Saturday, August 19,2023 at Wise Reed Funeral Home in Eupora, MS. Officiating the service will be Pastor Luke Pogue of Calvary Chapel.

 Hubert "Ray" Parish, age 80 of Weir, MS passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

Funeral Services were held 3:00PM Sunday 8/13/23 at Weir Baptist Church with burial in the Weir Cemetery. The Graveside/Committal Services will be held at Weir Baptist Church instead of Weir Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30PM until time for service at 3:00PM Sunday 8/13/23 at Weir Baptist Church.

Hubert Ray Parish, 80, went to his heavenly home 8/12/23 at his residence in Weir, MS. Funeral Services were held 3:00PM Sunday 8/13/23 at the Weir Baptist Church with burial in the Weir Cemetery. Bro. William Bouchillon officiated. Pallbearers were; Caleb and Corey Parish, Trent and Andrew Furr, Seth Meyers and Chase Stephens.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Dewey and Mary Jane Parish, his son; James Ray Parish, his brothers; Charles Parish, his identical twin brother, Kay Parish, and D. L. Parish, his sisters; Wilma Ingram, Christine McCrary, Draper Johnson, Grace Meyers and Betty Henning.

Mr. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 61 years; Barbara Parish, his daughter; Jill (John) Furr, Ackerman, MS, his son; Bert (Elizabeth) Parish, Mathiston, MS, his brother; Rev. Bobby (Jo) Parish, Weir, MS, his sister; Ruth Baily, Gonzales, LA, six grandchildren; Andrew (Casey) Furr, Trent Furr, Leis Parish, Caleb Parish, Chance Stephens and Paige (Henry) Brutus and three great grandchildren; Walker Furr, Riley Furr and Eli Stephens.

Ray gave his loving wife, Barbara surprise gifts at Christmas and other holidays. She was his constant companion and greatest encourager. He was a loving father and Pa-Pa to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed staying busy with woodworking projects, making pralines for family and friends and was always lending a hand to others. He was proud of his yard and pond and constantly cutting grass and making improvements. Ray was a faithful member of Weir Baptist Church serving as deacon and trustee for many years. He loved his Lord and his Church and enjoyed serving others and sharing his faith. He worked as a mechanic at Garan, Deweese Apparel and Redkap. He also ran the vending route for Coca Cola.
