Roxene H. Atkinson

Roxene H. Atkinson, 91, passed away on January 28, 2024, at her residence in Starkville, MS. She was born March 8, 1932, in Louisville, MS to Angus R. Hall and Hassie L. Bowie Hall. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1950 and went on to attend and graduate from MS University for Women in 1954. She later married Charles L. Atkinson on December 27, 1958. Mrs. A’ was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Starkville, MS, and was an active member of the First Pres Women of the Church where she served as moderator and received a lifetime service award. She also served as the Sunday School Superintendent for the Youth of First Pres and was an active member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class.She worked for the Starkville Public School System for nearly forty years as a classroom teacher for her first few years and then as a Guidance Counselor for many years before her retirement. She also taught an American Government Correspondence Course at MSU. During this time, she also obtained a Specialty in Psychology from MSU to further her career in helping young people. She was a member of several State and National Education Organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Angus and Hassie Hall, her husband, Charles, and her sister, Dr. Virginia Read.

She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Lynn Atkinson of Florence MS, and Jeannie Atkinson White and her husband, Yaun White of Alabaster AL, and their two daughters, Maggie and Hannah White.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, February 2, 2024, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS, with the funeral service following at 11:00 am. Dr. Martin Lifer will conduct the service. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery.
