Joyce Elizabeth McDonald Sullivan

Mrs. Joyce Elizabeth McDonald Sullivan, 78, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 1st, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Bobby Joe Butler, Rev. Gerald Butler, and Rev. Charles Rook officiating. Interment will be in Ellison Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sullivan was born March 29, 1933, in Preston, MS. She was retired from Quality Control at Spartus Corp. She was a member of Ellison Ridge Baptist Church. Her hobbies included reading her bible, quilting, gardening, word search puzzles, and enjoying time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edgar and Lessie Mae McDonald; a sister, Walterine Moore; and brothers, Paul McDonald, Grady McDonald, Lindsey McDonald, and twins, Edgar & Lester McDonald. She is survived by her husband of 61 years (married 8/4/1950) , Billy B. Sullivan; daughters, Vicki (Taylor) Tucker of Louisville, Lisa (Steve) Morgan of Louisville, and Renee (Wes) Jones of Columbus, MS; 10 grandchildren, Kiley Linch, Matthew Tucker, Blake Morgan, Kelli Linch, Clay Stanley, Jeffrey Tucker, Codi Parker, Dylan Morgan, Tyler Jones, and Will Jones; 9 great grandchildren, and 2 on the way.

Mr. George Warren Westbrook, 80, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2011, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Mr. Westbrook was born February 16, 1931. He was the owner of Westbrook Funeral Home, from which he retired after 31 years of service, and he was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville.

Mr. Westbrook is survived by his daughter, Pam Westbrook Smith of Louisville, Mississippi; and by his son, Ronald B. Westbrook and wife, Valorie, of Little Rock, Mississippi. He is also survived by two sisters, Yvonnie Walker and husband, Pete, and Peggy Williamson and husband, Charlie, all of Mendenhall, Mississippi. Mr. Westbrook also has three grandchildren: Rachel Smith, Warren Hastings Westbrook and wife, Krystal, and Robert Bailey Westbrook, and one great-grandchild, Anna Kate Westbrook. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pat Westbrook, and by his parents, Virgil T. and Stella Warren Westbrook.

Mr. Elliot was born April 11, 1973. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, and he was an electrician and was a member of NECA-IBEW Local 480.

In addition to his wife, Lara Elliott, Mr. Elliott is survived by two daughters: Candace Thornton of Preston,Mississippi, and Alex Moody of Melbourne, Arkansas. He is also survived by three sons: Adam Elliott of Melbourne,Arkansas, Steven Thornton of Preston, Mississippi, and Jake Moody also of Melbourne, Arkansas. In addition, Mr. Elliott is also survived by his parents, David and Sandra Pennington Elliott of Columbus, Mississippi; as well as, his father and mother-in law, J. W. and Joan Holdiness of Louisville, Mississippi. Also, Mr. Elliott is survived by his sister, Lauren Kelly and husband, Brian, of Columbus, Mississippi, and his grandmother, Beatrice Pennington of Caledonia,Mississippi.

Mr. Billy Higgason, 72, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at his residence in McCool, Mississippi. Mr. Higgason was born June 3, 1939. He was a member of Ackerman Apostolic Church, and he was a logger, retiring from Weyerhaeuser Corporation.

In addition to his wife, Mable Kugle Higgason, Mr. Higgason is survived by three sons: Billy Russell “Rusty” Higgason and wife, Karen, of Allenhurst, Georgia; Steven Higgason and wife, Hadassah, of Iola, Kansas; and David Shane Higgason of McCool, Mississippi. He is also survived by his sister, Christine Thompson and husband, Robert, of Tupelo, Mississippi, and one brother, Jamie Higgason and wife, Glenda, of Louisville, Mississippi. Mr. Higgason also has seven grandchildren: Kelsey, Megan, Macey, and Kadyn Higgason all of Allenhurst, Georgia; Scott and Scarlett Higgason of Iola, Kansas; and Cameron Higgason of Philadelphia, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by his parents, Reuben Albert and Carrie Cornelia Burton Higgason; three sisters and one brother.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Kirby (Patricia) Majure of Scotland Neck, N.C., and Joseph Marc (Nancy) Majure of Durham, N.C.

She is also survived by four grandchildren: Malcolm Hailey and wife, Mandy; Allen Hailey and wife, Leigh Ann; Belynda Luke and husband, Chip; and April Bane and husband, Dave. She also has five great-grandchildren: Laura Beth Hailey, Kady Rose Hailey, Tanner and Tatum Luke, and Braxton Bane. She is preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Mrs. Evelyn Lucille Thomasson Clower, 82, of Pascagoula, MS, died Sunday, November 13, 2011, at George County Regional Hospital in Lucedale, MS. Mr. Clower was born June 3, 1929 in Sturgis, MS. She raised 5 children, and loved traveling and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert & Ina Thomasson of Sturgis, MS; her husbands, Kenneth Wood, and Robert Clower; a son, Donald Wood; and a brother, W. A. Thomasson.

She is survived by four children, Larry K. Wood, Barbara Wood Bryant, Daniel (Suzanne) Wood, and David (Donna) Wood, all of Pascagoula, MS ; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Mr. Lovern was born October 11, 1938. He was a member of New Life Apostolic Church in Jackson, Mississippi, and he was a retired merchandiser for McCarty Holman, where he worked for 38 years.
In addition to his wife, Patsy Peden Lovern, Mr. Lovern is survived by his daughter, Tonya James and husband, Rickey, of Byram, Mississippi; two sons, Joey Lovern and wife, Angela, of Brandon, Mississippi, and Shelton Lovern and wife, Alyson, of Pace, Florida; and two brothers, James Harmon Lovern and wife, Juaweese, and Jerome Lovern and wife, Joy, all of Philadelphia, Mississippi. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Marissa Lovern of Nashville, Tennessee; Desmond Lovern of Brandon, Mississippi; DeAnndra Lovern of Pace, Florida; and Ethan James of Byram, Mississippi, as well as a great-grandson, Brody Patterson. Mr. Lovern is preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Lala Elizabeth Posey Lovern.

Mr. Ralph Franklin Shotts, 86, died Monday, November 7, 2011, at Winston Medical Center in Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, Nov. 10th, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Brett Golson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Shotts was born August 13, 1925, in Finkbine, MS. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in India, China, & Burma. He received his B.S. degree from Mississippi State University in 1951. He owned and operated Eastside Motors since 1972. He was a former Scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts, and was a member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rena and Lee Shotts; and two brothers, Edgar Shotts and Charles Ray Shotts.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Annette Avara Shotts; two sons, Charles (Rhonda) Shotts, and Frankie (Sue) Shotts, both of Louisville; a brother, Gene (Zene) Shotts of Mendenhall, MS; three grandchildren, Jamie (Laura) Shotts, Jay Shotts, and Ryan Shotts ; and one great grandchild, Jacey Shotts.

Mr. Henry Bruce Goodin, 69, died Friday, November 4, 2011, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Mr. Goodin was born December 14, 1941 in Winston County, Mississippi. He was a carpenter for Hughes Construction, and an avid quail hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Commie Wilson Goodin and Lizzie Bell Butler.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Robertson Goodin of Louisville; a daughter, Kimberly (Daniel) Robertson of Louisville; two sons, Chad (Jackie) Goodin and Brad Goodin, both of Louisville; four sisters, Kathleen Robertson of Louisville, Nita McAdory of St. Clair Shores, MI, Patsy Perry of Flora, MS, and Mary Jane Soufi of Gaithursburg, MD; three brothers, Bennie Goodin of Emmett. MI, Paul Goodin of Sturgis, MS, and Ricky Goodin of Louisville; and six grandchildren, Ashton Goodin, Austin Goodin, Justin Goodin, Kalee Goodin, Chandler Robertson, and Camden Robertson.

Sherry Ann Taff

Sherry Ann Taff, born on August 7, 1951, in Louisville, Mississippi, died suddenly on October 29, 2011. She is preceded in death by her mother and father Eddie Mae and Howard Leon White and her sister Sandra White Creed. She is survived by her loving husband, John Snowden Taff, with whom she shared 37 years of marriage, her daughter Sarah Quinn Power and husband Jarrod Power of San Antonio, her son Caleb Snowden Taff of San Antonio, her sister Susan White Dempsey of Louisville, Mississippi, her Uncle Bobby and Aunt Cynthia White of Pickensville, Alabama, as well as a host of beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sherry will be remembered by her family, her students, and her friends as someone who lived with passion and energy dedicated always to helping others. As a career educator she wanted her students, including her children, to know how to learn.

Sherry received her BA and MA degrees in Educational Psychology from Mississippi State University. Upon graduation she and her husband John served two years in Costa Rica with the Peace Corps. Upon returning to the states Sherry began her career as a teacher. She taught for 25 years in the Northside Independent School District atClark High School, Stinson Middle School and O’Conner High School. She received additional post-graduate training in Clinical Psychology from St. Mary’s University and was certified as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology so that she could test and diagnose students with learning disabilities. Her extensive on-going research on cognitive learning led her to develop a style of curriculum and methodology that can be used by teachers of any subject to aid a student’s ability to learn. Upon retirement from NISD, she continued to work with teachers, giving workshops in the Northside and Harlendale school districts and other school districts in Texas. She was currently working on her Doctorate in Education through the Educational Leadership Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Sherry willingly gave of her time and abilities to help others wherever she found a need. She touched the lives of thousands of students and others, whether it was tutoring children, helping troubled teens, conducting community Bible studies or working with her church youth group. In all, her highest commitment through her Christian faith was to her family.

A memorial service for Sherry will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Wayside Chapel with visitation with family to follow. 1705 Northwest Loop 410, San Antonio, Texas 78213. Graveside services will be onMonday, November 7, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Betheden Cemetery in Louisville, Mississippi.

Shirley Dempsey Holmes

Mrs. Shirley Dempsey Holmes, 53, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at North Mississippi MedicalCenter in Tupelo, Mississippi. Visitation will be at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi, on Thursday, November 3, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2011, at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Rev. Allen Eaves officiating. Interment will be in Welcome Chapel Jesus Name Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Holmes was born September 26, 1958, to Raymond and Minnie Selma Dempsey. She was a member of Welcome Chapel Jesus Name Church, and she loved growing flowers in her yard and fishing.

In addition to her husband, Joey Holmes, Mrs. Holmes is survived by her mother, Minnie Selma Dempsey; two sisters, Judy Stovall and Gail Nowell Dempsey; two brothers, Gerald Ray Dempsey and wife, Vicky, and Chester Dempsey and wife, Mona, all of Louisville, Mississippi. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Tess Satcher and husband, Jonathan, of New Hope, Mississippi; a step-son, Trey Holmes and wife, Amanda, of Columbus, Mississippi; three step-grandchildren, Aly Holmes, Haley and Madison Satcher; and her beloved dog, Fred. She is preceded in death by her father, Raymond Dempsey.

Pallbearers will be Raymond Dempsey, II, Jarrod Dempsey, Justin Dempsey, Brandon Stovall, Brett Kitchens, Chad Kitchens, Trey Holmes, and Jay Watson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Cotton Stokes, Bill Boykin, Laice Nowell, and Travis Joiner.
