Mary Adelyn Burris

Mary Adelyne Lavender Burris, 100, a life-long resident of Weir, MS, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, the 2nd of October, 2016 at Louisville Healthcare Nursing Home in Louisville, MS with her daughter Gloria Curtis by her side.

Funeral services will be held at Weir Baptist Church in Weir, MS on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 2:00 with visitation immediately before beginning at 12:30 at the church.
Born on May 9, 1916 to William Hardy and Bessie Buck Lavender, she was the third of four children. She graduated from Weir High School and continued her education at Holmes Junior College. She worked first for the Bell Telephone Company in Jackson, MS and later worked as a clerk at her parent's store, Lavender's Store, in Weir for many years. On September 1, 1940, Adelyne married the love of her life Lucius "Harold"Burris, Sr. of Gautier, MS and they were married for 64 years until his death.

Adelyne was a faithful member of Weir Baptist Church for over 70 years. She served as Sunday School teacher, Discipleship Training teacher, GA leader, and was the WMU director for Choctaw County for many years. She helped establish several WMU groups at various churches in Choctaw County. She was also the church pianist and organist for many years.

"Granny", as she was known to those who loved her dearly, loved to work in her yard and spent countless hours tending to her beautiful rose and flower gardens. She loved to arrange flowers for people with cuttings from her own yard and she had such a touch for beautiful arrangements.

Adelyne was preceded in death by her loving husband Lucius Harold Burris, Sr., her brothers Harry Lavender and Charles Lavender and sister Margaret Solomon; her son Lucius Harold Burris, Jr of Birmingham, AL and her son-in-law Joe Ed Curtis of Louisville, MS.

She is survived by her daughters Betty Ann Heatly of Lubbock, TX and Gloria Burris Curtis of Louisville, MS; and her Daughter-in-Law Martha Burney Burris of Birmingham, AL. In addition, she is survived by 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
