Travis Leon Holder

Travis Leon Holder was born in Winston County, Mississippi, on October 3, 1938, the third son to Clyde Hilton and Mary Sue (Gregory) Holder. He was born to sharecroppers and grew up picking cotton with his two brothers and two sisters. He attended Calhoun School and then Winston School, what is now known as Nanih Waiya. After high school, he moved to Chicago to work and send money home to his parents. He shared an apartment with his brother, Ralph. It was during this time he was blessed with his first nephew, Ricky, who he always considered another son.

In 1961, while visiting his parents in Noxapater, he went to pick up his sisters from school. It was then he saw Bobbie White for the first time, his sister Kitty’s best friend. He had heard about her, but they had not yet met. He thought she was the most beautiful young lady he had ever seen. Kitty introduced them and it was instant love – they went on to marry on May 12, 1962, two days before Travis left for Basic Training with the National Guard. At that time ladies were not allowed to attend school if they were married. In order to complete her junior year of high school, Bobbie kept their marriage a secret until the end of the school year.

Travis and Bobbie started their family at the end of the next year with the birth of Paul. He was followed 14 months later by Melissa. The two red-headed siblings were joined by Mark the next year. The houseful of three under four was loud, busy, and happy. But, Travis knew something was missing. Eight years later he convinced Bobbie to have another baby (actually, he asked for three more and Bobbie agreed to ONE more). Alicia Dawn rounded out the family.

Travis worked at Georgia-Pacific from the year they opened in 1966 until he retired in 2000. It was then that Travis and Bobbie started their favorite chapter of their life together – retirement. Unlike so many couples who need time away from one another, they did not want to be apart. They did projects together, traveled to see their children and grandchildren, babysat grandbabies, gardened, and simply enjoyed their beautiful life together.

The unexpected death of Travis on April 25, 2025, at the age of 86 was sudden and shocking. But his family knows that one wish he had was to never be confined to a bed and unable to do for himself. God showed grace to Travis and his family knows he is no longer in pain.

Travis was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law Brenda Holder, his older brothers Henry Holder and Ralph Holder, his younger sister Betty Parker, and a newborn baby brother. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Bobbie. His son Paul Holder and wife Sharon, of Georgia; his daughter Melissa Nail and husband Richard, of Indiana; his son Mark Holder and wife Sheri of Nebraska; his daughter Alicia Dawn Cole of Louisville; and his nephew and honorary son, Rick Holder and wife Lynn of Illinois. He is also survived by nine grandchildren who loved and adored him: Sean Davis and Clay; April Dawn Wilson and Alex; Jake Nail and Katie; Topper Nail and Rachel; Rebecca Harris and Shane; Travis Alan Holder; Savannah Stanley and Colby; Samuel Travis Cole and Macayla; and Alexandra McDonald and Brandon. He is also survived by his honorary grandchildren Brittany Dempsey Dickerson and Kali Rae Dempsey Rogers. The joy of his later years was the blessing of great-grandchildren: Riley Dawn, Rowan, Brooks, Jamie, Loralei, Charlie, Mackenzie, and he was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Malachai this fall. He is also survived by his baby sister Kitty Spears and nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Monday, April 28th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Dr. Mason Joy and Rev. Gary Beam officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

Henry Francis Brandt

Mr. Henry Francis Brandt, 95, of Louisville, Mississippi, passed away on March 4, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi, with his loving wife, JoAnn, by his side. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in the Massey Funeral Home Chapel. Born on July 1, 1929, in Jefferson City, Missouri, Henry was the son of Bernard Elias and Eva Annabelle (Todd) Brandt. He graduated from St. Peter's Catholic High School in 1947. After high school, Henry proudly served his country during the Korean War with the 441st Counterintelligence Corps and the 10th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan under the Far East Command. He received an honorable discharge after the war ended in 1953. Henry married JoAnn Jobe of California, Missouri, and together they had one daughter, Melanie Ann Brandt O'Kelley.

Henry earned a degree in accounting, graduating with honors from the University of Missouri, and began his business career with Arthur Andersen & Associates in Kansas City, Missouri. Over the next forty-eight years, his career took him to various locations, including Oklahoma, Georgia, South Carolina, and Mississippi. One of the highlights of his career was his work at Bellwood Industries in Ackerman, Mississippi, where he spent more than twenty years. He retired on his seventy-seventh birthday.

A dedicated civic volunteer, Henry was a member of the Lions Club for fifty years and was actively involved in the Rotary Club. He also served as Mississippi chairman of the national advisory council of the U.S. Small Business Administration, was a member of the National Accounting Association, and served as past chairman of the Winston County Republican Party. Additionally, he was elected to the school board in Toombs County, Georgia, and served as a Boy Scout leader. In retirement, Henry enjoyed volunteering at the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge.

A man of deep faith, Henry served the church throughout his life. He helped organize an Episcopal parish in Vidalia, Georgia, and later served as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Mississippi. Raised in the Catholic Church, he explored various Protestant denominations over the years and enjoyed engaging in thoughtful discussions about church teachings. In Louisville, he attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturdays and First Presbyterian Church on Sundays.

Henry had many hobbies, including running, which he started in the 1960s before it became popular. He ran two marathons, participated in numerous 5K races organized by the Mississippi Track Club, and competed in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans, and the Mississippi Senior Olympics. He also qualified for several events at the U.S. Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh, PA. Often, he could be seen running in the park by the tennis courts in Louisville.

Another passion of Henry's was painting. He enjoyed working with watercolors and acrylics and was a founding member of the Red Hills Art Association in Louisville. Nothing brought him more joy than painting and discussing art with friends.

An avid animal lover, Henry had many dogs and cats throughout his life and wrote poems and short stories about them. His beloved dog of fifteen years, Rex, was the subject of a book that Henry wrote and self-published.

Henry enjoyed spending time in nature—whether running on the beach, camping in the mountains, walking in the woods, fishing with a cane pole by a stream, or working in the yard. He also loved to travel, particularly to New Orleans, where he often visited for its food, music, and fun.

He adored his wife of seventy years, JoAnn, and their daughter, Melanie. His grandsons, Clark and his namesake, Brandt, brought him immense joy. He was extremely proud of their accomplishments and cherished the opportunity to watch them grow into men. Henry also had a deep love for his grandsons' wives, Nancy and Mary Ellen, and was blessed with two great-grandchildren, William (age 2) and Annie (4 months).

For the past five years, Henry was a resident of the Beehive Assisted Living Home in Louisville, where he enjoyed interacting with the staff and making new friends in the community.
