John L. Hemphill

John L. Hemphill passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at his home in Louisville, Mississippi, with those who dearly loved him by his side. Visitation will be Sunday, August 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 12 at Sardis Cemetery with Reverend William Shepheard officiating.

John L. was born August 25, 1957, to Clovis and Mattie Higginbotham Hemphill in Winston County, Mississippi. He was a Mason and a Shriner. John L. devoted 28 years to Taylor Machine Works where he was employed as a Tech HVAC Communications System Electrical Mechanical Maintenance personnel. He also owned a heating and air conditioning business; he especially enjoyed helping those who were sick or elderly and needed his services. John L. enjoyed fishing and hunting but most knew that he was a “workaholic.” He enjoyed raising catfish in his pond for a time and he was a member of the Nanih Waiya Volunteer Fire Department. He answered the call of his country by serving 12 years in the Army and Army National Guard.

John L. is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Belvia Howard Hemphill of Louisville; and his children: Kristin (Harpreet) Singh of Bossier City, Louisiana; Christy (Timmy) Barrier of Philadelphia, Mississippi; and Jessie (Tiffany) Howard, Jr. of Noxapater, Mississippi. One of his greatest joys was being “PawPaw John” to his grandchildren: Maxwell Singh, Candace (Justin) Bragg, Isaac Barrett, Haylie Barrett, Emma Grace Barrier, Tristan Howard, and Lydia Howard; and his great-grandchildren: Heartlee, Addison, Levi, and Joseph Bragg. He also leaves behind his seven siblings: James (Becky) Hemphill, Randy Hemphill, Cathy Ferris, Danny Hemphill, Eugene Hemphill, David (Donna) Hemphill, and Paula (Grady) McCluskey; as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jasmine Singh; father, Clovis Hemphill; mother and step-father, Mattie Hemphill West and Paul West; brother, Jeffery Hemphill; sister-in-law, Camilla Hemphill; and his brother-in-law, Larry Ferris.

Serving as pallbearers are Henry Bane, Ronnie Boydstun, Danny Heard, Bennie Mac Joiner, Danny Robertson, and Tommy Tarlton. Memorials in honor of John L. may be given to Sardis Cemetery Fund, c/o Glenda Thomas, 215 Thomas Road, Louisville, MS 39339.
