James Wendell Rogers

James Wendell Rogers, age 80, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be Monday, June 3, 2019, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4 at Harmony Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Lundy and Dr. Jimmy Porter officiating. Interment will follow in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.


Wendell was born March 13, 1939, in Winston County to Quinton and Dwight Kemp Rogers. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, and on various committees. He began his 44 year banking career at Deposit Guaranty National Bank in Jackson where he worked 16 years. For the next 18 years, he served as president of Sunburst Bank in Louisville; for the next five years he was president of the Sunburst Bank in Southaven, Mississippi. The last five years of his banking career was spent as president of Senatobia Bank in Senatobia, Mississippi. Wendell was also a member of Gideon’s International where he served as president and treasurer in the local Winston-Choctaw Camp. He was also a member of the Mississippi Bankers Association, American Bankers Association, Louisville Bankers Association, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Businessmen’s Club.

Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Helen Boydstun Rogers of Louisville; his daughter Paula Wall and husband Tod of Decatur, Mississippi; and son Gary Rogers and wife Linda also of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Papaw” to his five grandchildren: Amy Rogers (Josh) Vance, Allison Rogers, Daniel Wall, Luke Wall, and Katelyn Wall. He also leaves behind two brothers Hershel (Irene) Rogers and Ronald Dale Rogers; and his sister Rebecca (Billy) Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Beasley, David Boydstun, Richard Boydstun, Jr., Ronnie Boydstun, Rusty Hanna, and Jerry Kemp. Memorials in honor of Wendell may be given to the Winston-Choctaw Gideon Camp, P. O.
