Bertie Jo "Bert" Hisaw

Bertie Jo “Bert” Hisaw, age 81, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 6, 2018, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018, in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Wells and Rev. David Keen officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 1 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will be in Ellison Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bert was born August 30, 1936, to Robert and Annie Beth Fuller Hisaw. She was a lifelong member of Ellison Ridge Baptist Church, where she was a devoted worker. Although Bert had no children of her own, she was “Mom” to many of her nieces and nephews and others in the community. She worked for many years at Spartus Corporation, and eventually retired from her job there. Bert was known for baking cookies and her family looked forward to receiving them as a present each year at Christmas. She always had a pound cake or cookies (or both) on hand when any visitors dropped by her house. In recent years, she became known for her caramel cakes as well as her chicken and dumplings.

Miss Hisaw is survived by two sisters: Joy Ming of Louisville; and Gayle Persons of Shuqualak, Mississippi; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Hisaw of Louisville; and Susan Hisaw Moore and husband, Alfred, of Pearl, Mississippi; and her brother-in-law, Joe Gutierrez also of Louisville. Bert is also survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Marion, Berlin, and Embree Hisaw; two sisters, Fanny Hisaw and Dorothy Gutierrez; her sisters-in-law, Virginia Hisaw and Willie Pearl Hisaw; and her brothers-in-law, Bennie Persons and Van Dorn Ming.

Serving as pallbearers are her nephews and great-nephews whom she loved dearly: Jared Cockrell, Larry Cockrell, Jon Richard Crowell, Brent Gutierrez, Justin Gutierrez, Robert Hisaw, Delbert Ming, Dewayne Ming, Kenny Persons, Brad Winstead, and Brant Winstead.
