Esther Watkins Wilson

Funeral services for Esther Watkins Wilson, will be Sunday, July 31, 2022, at 2:00pm, at Webb & Stephens Funeral Home in Dekalb, MS. Interment will follow at Spring Hill UMC cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 2pm at the funeral home. Bro. George Warner will be officiating. Mrs. Wilson, 95, died Monday, July 25, 2022, at Winston County Nursing Home in Louisville, MS.

 
She is survived by her children; Marcus T. Wilson (Faye), Aaron Wilson (Karen), Lowell Wilson (Lisa) of Louisville, and Miriam Watson (Tommy); 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Starlen Wilson; her parents; Chester and Maggie Watkins; her siblings; Rufina Gully, Jamima Powell, Alpha J. Watkins, and Omega Herrington.

Mrs. Wilson was retired from Commercial Bank with over 30 years. She also taught school for a couple of years at Prince Chapel in the Coy community. She attended Pharmacy school at The University of Mississippi but quit when her husband asked her to marry him. She loved her vegetable garden and worked that garden into her 80’s until her health just wouldn’t let her do it anymore. She had a very strong relationship with God and was a member of Spring Hill United Methodist Church.

Bettie Irene Rogers

Bettie Irene Rogers, age 81, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 29, 2022, at her residence in Louisville, Mississippi. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, August 1 at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2 in the Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Michael Wells officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in Plattsburg Cemetery in Winston County.

Irene was born on January 10, 1941, to William David and Betty Hamilton Collins in Winston County. She is a member of Harmony Baptist Church. Irene was an avid quilter who enjoyed the quilting retreats she shared with friends. She was a member of the Red Hills Quilters Guild, the Scrappers Quilting Guild, and the Mississippi Quilters Association (MQA). Not only was Irene a talented quilter, she also enjoyed painting and ceramics. Irene worked at Weyerhaeuser for many years and later she enjoyed working as a Poultry Farmer. She also loved to fish.

Irene is survived by her husband of 33 years Hershel Rogers; and her daughter Bettie Lewis and husband David. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her grandson Chad Lewis (Austin Truhett). She is preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings: William Collins, Aquilla Mayo, Bernice Pace, Mary Ruth Rogers, Frank Collins, Eloise Divine, Nancy Chancellor, Michael Collins, and Earl Collins.

Serving as pallbearers are Chad Lewis, Austin Truhett, Aiden Collins, Louis Collins, John David Henderson, Andrew Logue, Cody Pace, and Roger Strickland. Honorary pallbearers are Joseph Pace and Daniel Stokes. Memorials in honor of Irene may be given to Plattsburg Cemetery.

Clyde Dean Greene

Mrs. Clyde Dean Greene, 92, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022, at Atwood Personal Care Home in Philadelphia, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 5th, at Rural Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Dowd officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Rural Hill Methodist Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Dean Greene was born in the Lobutcha Community on September 10, 1929, the first child of Essel and Noel Watts - five more siblings followed. Her father was a farmer and by the age of four she was in the fields picking cotton. Her grandfather Grover Cleveland Shumaker owned a general store up the road from their farm and she loved to share memories of going to that little store.

Her family was among the original founders of Rural Hill Methodist Church. Clyde’s father was the song leader there for many years. She loved to play the piano and sing hymns. Over the years she went back many times for the annual memorial days and singings.

Mrs. Greene went to a one room school house and finished as the Valedictorian of her class. She played varsity basketball. She completed her education at Drone’s Business School in Jackson.

Clyde Dean retired after over 30 years of working in public service at the Winston County Courthouse where she serves 27 years as the Deputy Circuit Clerk. She was involved in several civic clubs - the Winston County Garden Club serving as president and the Local Business and Professional Women’s Club and was also elected president. For several years, she served as Chairperson of the Winston County American Heart Association.

She loved to garden and doing yard work, and enjoyed caring for her large lawn into her 80’s. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Louisville.

Many people in Louisville remember “Miss Clyde” for her years at the Courthouse and her sense of style.

She is survived by her three children: Joan Greene, Nashville, TN, Marty Greene (Amy), Edwards, MS, and Annette Crabtree, Louisville, MS, four grandchildren, Jason Greene, Jaime Harris, Josh Greene, and Mason Greene, and nine great-grandchildren. Her brother Allen Watts (Sissie), Louisville, MS. Sister-in-Law and dear friend, Nelda Watts, and a number nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Essel Shumaker Watts and Noel Watts, her siblings: Hayward Watts, Wade Watts, Dorcey Lawrence and Jimmie Ted Watts.

James “Jim” Murphy Watson, Jr.

James “Jim” Murphy Watson, Jr., 58, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at his residence in the Morgantown Community of Sturgis, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church of Sturgis with Bro. Luke Gardner and Bro. Charles Smith officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the church from 9 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Morgan Chapel Cemetery in Oktibbeha County.

Jim was born on May 19, 1964, to James Murphy Watson, Sr. and Bennie Coggin Watson. He is a member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church where he served as the music director. Jim was a graduate of Itawamba Community College where he earned an Associate of Science degree. As an avid outdoorsman, he found joy in his work as the owner of Clear Creek Land and Timber Company. Jim achieved his lifelong dream to become a pilot and enjoyed flying his plane. He also loved horses and enjoyed coaching t-ball.

Jim is survived by his wife of 35 years Brenda Beasley Watson; two sons Taylor Watson and wife Sissy and Reid Watson and wife Mary all of the Morgantown Community. He is also survived by his mother Bennie Watson of Griffin, Georgia; and by his two sisters Susan Watson (Jeff) Marlin and Stacy Watson Hopper. One of his greatest joys was being “Papaw” to his five grandchildren: Nathan, Aubrey, Spencer, Cullen, and Penelope. Jim is preceded in death by his father, two children Sydney Elaine Watson and William Grayson Watson, and his grandchild Elijah Tuck Watson.

Martha Jane Kinard Rives

Martha Jane Kinard Rives, age 79, transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Monday, July 25, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29 at First Baptist Church of West Point. Visitation will be the day of the service at the church from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Bevill Hill Cemetery in Winston County.

Jane was born March 9, 1949, to Dero and Pauline Hamill Kinard in Winston County. She was a 1961 graduate of Louisville High School. After high school, she received both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Education from Mississippi State University. Jane’s career as a teacher and principal spanned 51 years and touched numerous families. The first two years of her teaching career were spent in Marietta, Georgia. On June 3, 1966, Jane married the love of her life, James Marshall Rives, and they moved to West Point. She was one of four founding members of Oak Hill Academy. During that time, she impacted thousands of students, whom she affectionately referred to as “my babies” regardless of their age, along with their families for 49 years. To honor her commitment to Oak Hill Academy, the elementary school building was named the Jane Rives Elementary School.

Jane was an icon in community events in West Point. She made several appearances riding a golf cart in full costume in the West Point Boo Parade held downtown each year for elementary students on Halloween morning. She and her Bunko girls also rode in the annual Christmas Parade. In honor of the anniversary of her 48th year of being an educator, Jane was invited by the local chamber to serve as the Grand Marshal of the West Point Christmas parade. She gladly accepted the invitation and lead the parade sitting atop a convertible and decked out in her freshly “fixed” hair and holiday best! In her retired years, Jane picked up a new hobby and realized she had a love for theater and being on stage! As a member of the West Point/Clay County Arts Council, Jane, along with her Golden Girls, made her stage debut in Cinderella in 2014. She was bit by the acting bug and later made special appearances in the stage productions of State Fair, The Wizard of Oz, and Hee Haw.

Jane was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of West Point for 45 years. While her son Brian was young, she spent many hours hosting youth events, chaperoning youth trips, and serving on committees. In recent years, she joined the Monday Morning Flower Ministry that delivers fresh flowers weekly to shut-ins and those in the community who have needs. Jane worked every summer in the kitchen serving snacks during Vacation Bible School. She made a point to teach the young boys they should not wear their caps inside, and she spoiled the other volunteers by bringing pound cakes and peanut brittle for them to snack on, too. For many years, she served on the Bereavement Committee that volunteered to feed grieving families and was a key supporter and encourager of the Music Ministry of FBC. To honor her mother, Jane served on the Board of Directors of Dugan Nursing Home for a number of years to insure the well-being of the residents.

Always willing to lend a hand, Jane was most proud of being a member of the “team” at Petal Pushers in West Point. She was a regular “delivery girl” on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and she became famous for the milkshakes she made and served every year at Christmas Open House.

Jane is survived by her son Brian Rives and wife Macy of Birmingham, Alabama. One of her greatest joys was being “MiMi” to her two grandchildren: Brayden and Addyson Rives. Jane enjoyed following them in any activities in which they were involved. She is preceded in death by her husband, James; and by her parents. Jane also leaves behind loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, James; and by her parents.

Serving as pallbearers are Lawrence Brantley, Drew Bounds, Paul Brand, Allan Clarke, Josh Massey, and Randy Rives. Mrs. Bobbie Ruth Rogers

Mrs. Bobbie Ruth Rogers, 92, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at her daughter’s home in Spring Hill, TN, surrounded by her daughter and her sister. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Franklin Smith officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Bobbie was born July 2, 1930, in Louisville, MS, to Ellis and Lydia Holdiness. Bobbie was self-employed, owning Bobbie’s Sandwich Shop in Meridian, MS. After selling the sandwich shop, she opened Bobbie’s Babies – a home daycare, where she cared for many, many children over the years. She retired and moved back to her hometown of Louisville, MS in the early 1900’s with her husband, Duane Rogers. Bobbie loved spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Lydia Holdiness, her husband, Odell Duane Rogers; her step-daughters, Gail Rogers Emerson and Peggy Rogers Blevins; three sisters, Valeria (Sis) Humphries, Janie Clark, Vera Hummell; four brothers, Herbert Holdiness, Hubert Holdiness, Clyde Holdiness, and T. W. Holdiness; one granddaughter, Christy Suzanna Yancey; one great granddaughter, Donna Williams, and one great grandson, Gary Spain.

She is survived by three daughters, Johnnie Natale of Acworth, GA, Alice Stone (Dennis) of Selma, AL, and Deborah Ethridge of Spring Hill, TN; a brother, Ellis (Arlene) Holdiness of Louisville, MS; a sister, Carolyn Ward of Iuka, MS; twelve grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Greg Trujillo, Mike Trujillo, Scot Bryd, Jamie Byrd, Cameron Gilbert, and David Ward. Honorary pallbearers will be Jesse Byrd, Brent Trujillo, Tyler Houston, and Gary Sanders.

Avenell "Nell" T. Turnipseed

Avenell Townsend Turnipseed, 100, passed away quietly in her home outside of Weir, MS Saturday morning, July 23, 2022. Mrs. 

Turnipseed was born April 8, 1922 in Attala County, MS to Boyd H. and Gracie Lee (Holland) Townsend. She was proceeded in death by her husband Kenneth H. Turnipseed of Weir, parents Boyd and Gracie Townsend of Kosciusko, brothers James A. Townsend of Ackerman and Ralph Townsend of Kosciusko, sister Lucille Townsend Hathcock of Kosciusko, daughter Neicy Turnipseed Burrell of Kosciusko, grandson, David Scott Dodd of Sallis, and granddaughter, Karen Leigh Burrell Phelps. She is survived by her brothers Carl Townsend and Cliff Townsend of Kosciusko, her daughter, Pat Turnipseed Dodd of Sallis, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, thirteen great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends along with her sweet companions, cat Missy and dog Happy.

Miss Nell, as she was referred to by most, was a graduate of Ethel High, school class of 1939. Following graduation, she worked at different cafes and factories in the Kosciusko area. When she married, she moved to Weir and worked alongside her husband in their dairy operation and at various factories in the county. In the 1960's she was employed by Mississippi State Extension as a nutrition aide helping educate impoverished families of Choctaw county on how to prepare nutritious meals using products from the US Commodity Program. Also, during this time she was active with the 4-H program and served as an officer in several organizations. In the 1970's the Turnipseeds moved to Ackerman where Miss Nell opened Nell's Country Kitchen at the intersection of Highway 12 and Highway 15. She cooked for many people there until her husband's death in 1976 at which time she sold the restaurant and moved back to the country. There she sewed and cooked for the public until her late 90's.

Miss Nell was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, several senior organizations when she was able to attend and was an adopted member of Weir Baptist Church. She was an avid reader before her eyesight failed. She loved to cook for her family and friends, and enjoyed growing many varieties of flowers. Miss Nell enjoyed singing and often sang specials in church. Her life was dedicated to her Lord, being His hands and feet to her family, friends and strangers.

She was laid to rest beside her husband Thursday July 27, 2022 at Salem United Methodist Church on Weir Highpoint Road in Choctaw County. Her service was officiated by Jared Busby, pastor of Centerville Baptist Church of New Albany and William Bouchillion, pastor of Weir Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Brooks Ables, Terry Ables, Ben Chambers, Kydorian Truss, Ben Turnipseed, and Lee Turnipseed. Memorials may be sent to Salem United Methodist Church, 4500 Weir McCool Road, McCool, MS 39108.

Kay Chapman

Kay Chapman of Brandon, Mississippi was made whole again on July 22, 2022, at The Arbor at The Orchard in Ridgeland, MS.

Kay was born and raised in Louisville, MS. She was a proud graduate of Louisville High School and maintained a lifelong connection to many of her classmates and friends, especially her beloved Girl Scout Troop.

She graduated from MSCW with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a minor in piano. She was a lifelong devotee of that instrument and started playing for St. Johns Lutheran Church at age 12.
After several teaching years she wished to branch out. Returning to school and obtained an MBA from the University of Southern Mississippi, she worked as a Trainer for then Bell South before venturing into business with childhood neighbor and lifelong friend, Annette Hand, establishing Kay Ann's Hallmark. This remained the most joyous work period of her life.

Kay is survived by her husband of 52 years, Johnny Chapman; son, Philip (Anne); grandson, Ben; brother, Kurt Forster (Judy); and niece, Jill Means.
She is also survived by cousins too numerous to mention but all played a role in her growth and development.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Frank H. and Nelle Bryson Forster.
Kay was a loving and faithful member of Brandon First United Methodist serving various volunteer capacities over the years and as a wedding coordinator.

Visitation will be at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at Brandon First United Methodist with a Service of Remembrance to follow at 3:00 P.M. conducted by the Reverend Scott Larsen and the Reverend Jim Orman.

The Family extends its deepest gratitude to the staff at The Rose Garden and The Arbor at The Orchard for their love and care of Kay during her time there. Special thanks also to Kay’s home caregiver, Jenny Woods.

Nancy Henderson

Nancy Dell Edwards was born January 28, 1942 near Chester, MS to Sherman Edwards and Irene McAdams. Her younger brother was Harry Edwards.

Nancy attended elementary school at Chester, then high school first at Weir then later at Ackerman. She graduated from Ackerman High School, attended Wood Junior College, and finished her formal education at Mississippi State University after earning her bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctorate degrees. She married Jimmy Hugh Henderson and was wedded to him until his death almost 59 years later. They had one son, Jimmy Dale Henderson.

She began her teaching career at Wicks' Elementary in Maben. She taught one year at Threadgill Elementary in Greenwood, then returned to Maben. After her 15 years teaching in the classroom, she took on the role of school principal for ten more years before retiring from the education field.
In addition to her career in teaching, Nancy helped her husband in his many business ventures including a restaurant, a convenience store, discount store, and a mini storage business in Eupora.

She had many interests including oil painting, piano, flower gardening, and writing. She had several submissions published in the Oxford So-In-So and other regional publications. She was an avid reader and traveler. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She died at 6:20 pm. Friday July 22 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Hugh Henderson; her mother, Irene McAdams, and her father, Sherman Edwards; and her brother, Harry Edwards.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Dale Henderson; two grandsons, Matthew Henderson, and Connor Hutson; a sister-in-law, Linda Edwards; one niece, Laurie Edwards; and two nephews, Dennis and Bruce Edwards

Pamela R. Miller

With a yard full of kids and a house full of family and friends Pamela Reid Miller "Nana" left this world on the evening of July 21st.

Services for Pam, 74, of Sturgis Mississippi will be held at Sturgis Baptist Church with visitation from 3:00-5:00 in the fellowship hall with the service to follow in the sanctuary.

Pam was born on May 5th 1948 in Ackerman, Mississippi the daughter of Halbert and Marie Reid of Ackerman. Pam was a 1966 graduate of Ackerman High school where she was a proud cheerleader for the Indians and Miss Ackerman High

Pam attended Holmes Community College where she completed a secretary program before beginning her 44 year career in the banking industry. Pam and her husband of 50 years are active members of Sturgis Baptist church. Pam was a light of Christ in this world who brought joy to everyone she encountered. Her greatest joy in life were her grandchildren.

Pam is survived by her husband Buddy, sons Jason (Morgan),Chris (Julie) and her daughter Kelli. Pam is also survived by her grandchildren Addi, Presley, Rivers, Rowan and Holden.

Monica Merchant Taylor

Mrs. Monica Merchant Taylor, 74, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 23rd, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Trent Jaudon and Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in East County Line Baptist Church Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Monica was born May 11, 1948, in Louisville, MS, to Raymond and Estelle Alewine Merchant. She was a graduate of Louisville High School and East Central Community College. She worked as payroll clerk at Sparus Corp. for 23 years, before working at Taylor Machine Works as credit manager, where she retired after 27 years. She was a member of South Louisville Baptist Church. Monica loved collecting antiques and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Jerry Taylor.

She is survived by three daughters, Honey (Byron) Nowell of McCool, MS, Angel (Eric) Whitehead of Louisville, and Lesley (Robert) Utz of Kosciusko, MS; a sister, Myrna (Terry) White of Louisville; two sisters-in-law, Joann (Lanoy) Adcock and Janette Nelson; four grandchildren, Anna Grace Whitehead, Taylor Luke Whitehead, Jerry Jack Nowell, and David Utz; and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Eric Whitehead, Robert Utz, Byron Nowell, Luke Whitehead, Jerry Jack Nowell, Greg Kemp, and Ricky Patterson.

Sam Calvin Trosper

Sam is a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. He answered the call of his country by serving in the United States Army.

David Henry Starns

Mr. David Henry Starns, 79, of West, MS, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Baptist Medical Center in Kosciusko, MS. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 23rd, at Old Wheeling Cemetery in Holmes County, MS, with Rev. Lynn Nations officiating. David was born on August 14, 1942, in Fort Worth, TX, to Tony Ann and Pete Starns. He was a graduate of Northside High School in Fort Worth, TX. He was a welder for G & O Manufacturing in Jackson for almost 30 years. He was an Army veteran where he served with the military police in Europe. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in West, MS. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Melton Starns; and his parents.

He is survived by a daughter, Bronwyn (Danny) Robertson of Jackson, MS; two sons, Nathan (Heather) Starns of Hattiesburg, MS, and Seth Starns of West, MS; his grandchildren, Abby, Mason, Betsy and Maggie Starns, Eli Starns, and Tanner and Brister Robertson; and two sisters-in-law, Louise Bookout and Melissa Stuckey.

Pallbearers will be Mason Starns, Eli Starns, Tanner Robertson, Brister Robertson, Danny Robertson, and Jason Dew.

Peggy Jean Simpson

Peggy Jean Simpson, age 89, passed away on July 19, 2022, surrounded by her loving family, at her home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Lundy officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Memorial Cemetery.

Peggy, the second of 10 children, was born on January 24, 1933, to Carl and Mae Wright Fleming in Carmichael, Mississippi. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Peggy was an avid outdoors person; she loved working in her yard and cutting grass. Even as a child, she enjoyed being outside and sweeping the yard with a sage brush broom. Peggy enjoyed growing a large garden and freezing or canning the vegetables she grew.

Peggy is survived by her children: Jimmy (Sonya) Simpson of Jackson, Mississippi, Randy (Jackie) Simpson of Peterman, Alabama, Glenda (Robbie) Childress of Dahlonega, Georgia, and Steve Simpson of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Mamaw” to her eight grandchildren: Brandon (Sarah) Simpson, Brady (Leah) Simpson, Gracie Simpson, Josh (Mandy) Clark, Mandy (David) Hessenius, Jason (Tiffany) Clark, Ashley (Thomas) Pruett, and Laura (Paul) Lee. She also leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren: Mathew Hessenius, David Hessenius, Jr., Kaylie Hessenius, Makenna Clark, Jada Clark, Brooklyn Clark, Ember Clark, Paisley Clark, Bryce Bragg, Braxton Bragg, Ayden Pruett, Leslie Pruett, Anslee Claire Hicks, Ty Hicks, Wesley Hicks, and Marlee-Kate Lee. She is also survived by her sister Cherry Martin, and two brothers Rickey Fleming and Mack D. Fleming.

 She is preceded in death by her husband R. T. Simpson, son Donnie Ray Simpson, daughter-in-law Debbie Simpson, parents, and her siblings: Evelyn Claridy, Anita Faye Coody, Diane Young, Wade Fleming, Garner Fleming, and Terell Fleming.

Edna Carroll Kirkpatrick

Mrs. Edna Carroll Kirkpatrick passed away peacefully on April 8, 2018 at the age of 88. Beloved wife of James W. Kirkpatrick by second marriage and the late John L. O’Quinn Sr. by first marriage. Mother of John L. O’Quinn Jr. (Deborah) and the late Jones C. O’Quinn. Grandmother of Jessica Tebo (the late Melvin) and Jill Viramontes (Santino). Great-grandmother of Ashleigh, Christopher, Cameron, Aimee, Giancarlo, Madeleine and Marcello. Sister of the late Perry J. Carroll. Daughter of the late Perry J. Carroll and Edna Headley Carroll. Also survived by other loving relatives and friends.

She was a longtime resident of Noxapater, MS, but more recently she was a resident of St. Margaret’s at Belleville Assisted Living Center. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of St. Margaret’s at Belleville and Serenity Hospice for their care and compassion shown to Edna and to her family during this difficult time.

Robert Hailey

Robert Wade Hailey, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at his residence with his loving family by his side. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, July 15 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jason Gross and Rev. Becky Smith officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 p.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Interment will immediately follow the service in Hailey-Richey Cemetery in Noxubee County.

Robert was born January 4, 1941, to J. T. and Alice Scarbrough Hailey. He was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church where for many years, he served as the music director. Robert graduated from Wood Junior College and later from Mississippi State University with a degree in Industrial Technology. He worked at U. S. Motors in Philadelphia for many years and eventually came home to farm. Robert enjoyed working on the farm, growing crops and he especially enjoyed working his cows. He loved anything Nanih Waiya school and community. Robert enjoyed deer hunting and he served on the board of Farm Bureau.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Peggy Triplett Hailey of Louisville, and his children: Malcolm Hailey and wife Mandy of Louisville, Allen Hailey and wife Ann of Preston, and Belynda Luke and husband Chip also of Preston. One of his greatest joys was being “Paw” to his six grandchildren: Laura Beth Hailey, Tanner Luke, Mallory (Kyle) Reynolds, Harley Pullin, Tatum Luke and Kady Rose Hailey; as well as his great-granddaughter Layton Reynolds whom he called “Buster”. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Lamar Hailey.

Serving as pallbearers are Allen Hailey, Tanner Luke, Tatum Luke, Timmy Ming, Chris Moody, and Ricky Patterson. Honorary pallbearers are Wade Hailey, Tommy Jackson, Derrell Ming, Bobby Moody, Raymond Reed, Donnie Triplett, Johnny Triplett, and the staff of Quality Hospice in Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Brenda Joyce McLeod (Miles)

Brenda Joyce McLeod (Miles), age 82, passed away on July 5, 2022, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Brenda was born on April 5, 1940, to Hazel Miles and Leonard Miles in Louisville, Mississippi.

Brenda attended the Mississippi State College for Women where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1965. She proudly taught Business Education courses in the Cobb County School District for 33 years with 30 years at Campbell High School in Smyrna, Georgia.

Her husband, Robert Jackson "Jack" McLeod, also taught high school and was an elementary school principal in Cobb County. Brenda and Jack were married in the small country church, Rocky Hill United Methodist, on July 9, 1966. At the time of their marriage, Brenda and Jack felt so fortunate that their parents were able to gift them $100 and a cow! They used the money for their honeymoon to the newly built Six Flags over Texas and had the cow butchered for the meat. Soon after their marriage, they relocated to the Atlanta area and began their new jobs with the school district.

Their beloved daughter, Christy Miles McLeod, was born on July 24, 1971. The couple would later build their dream home in Marietta and became long-time members of the First Baptist Church of Marietta. After retiring from teaching in 2001, Brenda would go on to substitute teach for 10 more years, which allowed her to spend more time enjoying the passions she had for most of her life including cooking, gardening, shopping, and especially spending time with her daughter.

Brenda is predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Hazel; her husband, Jack; and her brother-in-law, Clinton Goodin. She is survived by her daughter, Christy McLeod; her sister, Shelby Jean Goodin; her niece, Lynn Jones; and her nephews, Larry Goodin and Clarence Goodin.

Funeral services will be held at the Rocky Hill United Methodist Church in Louisville, Mississippi, on July 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., coincidentally the day before the Carr Family Reunion. Visitation will be the day of the service at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. 

In lieu of flowers, Brenda’s family requests donations be made to the Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, where Brenda and Jack began their married life together, or to the First Baptist Church of Marietta General Operating Fund.

Terry Jean Ellis

Mrs. Terry Jean Ellis passed away Friday, July 8, 2022, at her residence in McCool, MS. Terry was born January 23, 1950, in Montgomery County, MS, to Terrell Burtram and Gloria Jean (Mullins) Burtram. She was 72 years old.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2022, 1:00 p.m. till 3:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Memorial funeral services will be announced and held at a later time and date.

Terry is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Ellis of McCool, MS; one son, William Glen Campbell of Eupora, MS; three daughters, Ashley Eakin of McCool, MS, Connie Elizabeth Hamilton of Florida, and Cynthia Renae Byrd of California; She is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Lepard of Blackhawk, MS, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Terry was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

Marion F. Bishop

Marion F. "Randy" Bishop passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022, in Ackerman, MS. He was born October 23, 1963, in Choctaw County, MS, to Bobby T. and Sarah(Andrews) Bishop. He was 58 years old. Marion was a member of Ackerman Church of God.

Rhonda K. Evans

Rhonda K. Evans, 42, of Choctaw County, Mississippi passed away in Carlyle, Illinois on 8 July 2022. She was born 5 August 1979 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama but had been a lifelong resident of Choctaw County.

​Rhonda graduated Weir High School as an outstanding player on the basketball team and her love of the game never ceased. She furthered her education, graduating with a degree in history from Mississippi State University. On 1 November 2003, she married Thomas Jefferson Evans, III (T.J.) at The Arbor of South Union Methodist Church in Ackerman, Mississippi. They have made their home on South Union Road ever since.

​She was predeceased by her dear mother, Margaret Smith Broughton, and her father-in-law, Thomas Dwyte Evans (her "Pop"). 

She is survived by her husband, T.J. Evans, her sister, Amanda June Manning (Jeremy), her brother, Pastor Scott Broughton (Amanda Lynn), niece Mary Kathryn Broughton, nephew Emerson Keeton Broughton, her mother-in-law, Sandra Land Evans, and her brother-in-law, Sandy Kenneth Evans (Rachel), and her dog Ruby.

​Rhonda was very active in the New Zion Baptist Church in Ackerman where her brother was the pastor for several years. Among her activities, she led Bible study. A dear friend said it best: "The first Bible study she picked and led was about family. That's no coincidence, she loved all her family A LOT! She loved her husband T.J. and his family as much as her own. She loved us all (her family and friends) and cared for us the way every Southern woman knows best (and that's by feeding us)." She made delicious meals and desserts, especially cheesecake. To that end, most recently, she managed the Ackerman Elementary School cafeteria.

​Rhonda followed Mississippi State football and basketball. She enjoyed tailgating as part of the "Lodi Dawgs" and you could often see her with at least one of her beloved nieces at a State basketball game. Rhonda was very supportive of T.J. with his career and continuing education. With her usual dry wit, she said she wanted her half of his diploma!

​Rhonda had been a longtime supporter of the Blair Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Her family requests, in lieu of flowers, that any memorial donations should be directed to Blair Batson Children's Hospital.

​A celebration of life service will be on Friday, 15 July 2022, at the Choctaw County Community Center in Ackerman at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at noon at the community center. Pallbearers are David Smith, Brady Smith, Martin Smith, Robert Liddell, James Marvin Liddell, and Jeremy Manning. There are a host of honorary pallbearers too numerous to mention.

Carvel “Buddy” Eaves

Carvel “Buddy” Eaves, age 96, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022, in the BeeHive Homes of Louisville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Carr officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 9:30 a.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Buddy was born January 5, 1926, to John and Welmer Stokes Eaves in Louisville. He was a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. Buddy dearly loved his church and church family. After 37 years, he retired from Southern Natural Gas where he worked in the pipe line department and later as a supervisor. Buddy loved spending time with his family and he also enjoyed gardening; giving much of what he raised away. He answered the call of his country by serving in the United States Navy.

Buddy is survived by two daughters Ginger Cline and husband Gary of Mendenhall, Mississippi, and Donna Carr and husband Mike of Wesson, Mississippi. One of his greatest joys was being “Pop or Papaw Buddy” to his six grandchildren: Keith Cline, Tony Leggett, and Caron (Joel) Wall, Casey Carr, Logan (Samantha) Carr, Hayley (Aaron) Welch; as well as 16 great-grandchildren: John Taylor Cline, Anna Rai Cline, Nic Cline, Paxton Leggett, Mattie Leggett, Colton Wall, Caleb Wall, Caroline Wall, Payden Austin, Carlie Austin, Jadon Carr, Jude Carr, Eli Carr, Remi Carr, Laila Board, and Riley Welch. He is preceded in death by his wife Mildred Clytee Eaves, his granddaughter Lana Brister, his parents, his stepmother Belle Livingston Eaves, two sisters: Gertie White and Zelloween Pearson, and her brother Junior Eaves.

William "Anthony" Frasier

Mr. William "Anthony" Frasier, 66, of Waynesboro, MS passed from this life Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Wayne General Hospital in Waynesboro, MS. He was born in Grenada, MS on Wednesday, January 25, 1956, to William Emmett Frasier and Joyce Ernestine Frasier. He was a member of Little Rock Assembly of God Church. He worked as Owner and Operator of A & J Barber Shop.

 
Mr. Frasier is preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Ernestine Frasier; daughter, Amy Marie Frasier.

Harlan Hatcher

Mr. Wallace Harlan Hatcher, 84, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Diversicare in Eupora, MS. Harlan was born September 21, 1937, in Winston County, MS. He was a graduate of Nanih Waiya High School, and had a long career in law enforcement. He worked with the Louisville Police Department, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s Dept., and served as Chief of Police in Ackerman for many years. He was a Mason and Shriner, and was very active in putting on the Shriner’s Good Samarian Horse Show for many years. He was a member of Ackerman Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Holder and John Hatcher; a son, Wallace Hatcher, Jr.; and a sister, Betty Lou White.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ann Dunn Hatcher of Ackerman; a daughter, Wanda Hatcher of Louisville; and a step-son, Allen Baswell of Ackerman.

Bobby Gene Crowell

Bobby transitioned from this world at home, surrounded by all his loving family. Bobby had a short but too long battle with lung cancer. He got his diagnosis on his birthday this year. His mind was always sharp and he knew what was going on and made his decisions on his own what he wanted and how he wanted things done. He was one of the greatest men ever and loved by so many.

His wife, Judy, daughter Brandi Kilgore, and all his grandchildren are planning a memorial. No date is set.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Will R. “Bob” Quinn; her sisters, Eva Dean Johnson, Delma Ruth Slawson, and Allie Jean Bozeman; and her brothers, Richard Smith, William Paul Smith, Jimmy Don Smith, and John Henry Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Norwood; two sons, Willie Quinn and Dustin Quinn; sisters, Christine Yates, Gladys Drury, Sammie Hemphill, Ann Jenkins, and Rosemary Brady; her brothers, Garland Smith, Bobby Joe Smith, and Rex Allen Smith; 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

 

 

Sammie Ballard Oswalt

Sammie Ballard Oswalt passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at her residence in Ackerman, MS. Sammie was born June 7, 1934, in Choctaw County, MS, to Sam David and Erma(Hunt) Ballard. She was 88 years old. Sammie was a retired bank teller. She was an active member of Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she attended and served faithfully.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Coleman Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Enon Cemetery.

Sammie is survived by 1 son, Charles(Betsy) Oswalt of Ackerman, MS; 1 sister, Nan Sullivan of Batesville, MS; 1 grandson, Chay Oswalt, and 1 granddaughter, Molly Oswalt both of Ackerman, MS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. "Smokey" Oswalt, Sr., her parents, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Jerry E. Hunt

Jerry E. Hunt, age 81, passed away on July 1, 2022, at Choctaw County Nursing Center in Ackerman, MS. Jerry was born in Sturgis, MS, on March 30, 1941, to Willie E. and Cramer Oswalt Hunt. Jerry worked and retired from construction and maintenance work.

Jerry is survived by his son, Jerry J. Hunt and wife Joni of Sturgis, MS, his daughter, Rhonda Walters and husband Michael of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and one sister, Pat Dryer of California. He is also survived by 4 granddaughters, Sidnie Hunt, Michelle Walters, Jessica Shrader, and Elizabeth Walters.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with burial to follow in Sturgis Cemetery in Sturgis, MS. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m., prior to service time on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.
