Rachel Johnson Gwin

Rachel Johnson Gwin, child of God and saved by grace, victoriously entered into eternal life with Jesus Christ and her loved ones who preceded her on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. Rachel was born on April 9, 1946 in Louisville, Mississippi to William Preston “Bo” Johnson and Annie Thelma Weathersby. She is survived by her son, John Paul Gwin, daughter-in-law, Missy Pilecki Gwin, and grandson, John Cole Gwin, all of Piperton, Tennessee; one brother “Bo” Johnson, Jr., (wife Linda) and one niece, Carrie Beth Aultman (husband Johnny) and great nephews, Jack and Oliver Aultman; numerous relatives of the Johnson, Weathersby and Gwin clans; and countless friends, old and new, whom she loved and cherished.

Reared in Louisville, Mississippi, Rachel attended Mississippi State University, then moved to the Memphis, Tennessee area where she began her family. While living in Germantown she was a member of Germantown Presbyterian Church, where she served in many positions with Presbyterian Women both locally and within the Memphis Presbytery. Rachel was also a member of Pegasus, an officer and on the Board of Directors of MIFA, Memphis Family Shelter and Subsidium. She worked in funeral and cemetery services for over 26 years beginning in 1993 when she moved to Jackson, Mississippi and continuing with Memphis Funeral Homes & Cemeteries until she retired and moved back to her hometown of Louisville in 2019.
Rachel was a current member of First Baptist Church in Louisville where she was involved in the Women’s Ministry Committee, sang in the choir, chaired the Flower Committee and serviced as Vice President of the Joy club. She also enjoyed being a part of the Belle Arts Club, served as Vice President of the Louisville Garden Club and was recently inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Rachel enjoyed reading, concerts, charity work, visiting with friends and family, and her patio garden where she watched the sunrise and counted her blessings. She truly loved the Lord Her God with all her heart, soul and mind and no doubt heard the words “well done my good and faithful servant” when she entered the pearly gates. Everyone who met her loved her, and her sweet spirit will be greatly missed here on earth. We rejoice that she is truly home and at peace watching the future of her family unfold with Jesus glasses on! A quote from the notes in the back of Rachel’s bible reads, “I will welcome you with open arms of love as you cross your bar to be with Jesus in eternity. Remember, being with Jesus is better than your birthday … imagine! Live in anticipation of the endless tomorrow.”

A visitation for Rachel will be held at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue on Tuesday, January 3rd from four o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening. Arthur Halfacre

Edward Arthur Halfacre departed this life December 22, 2022, at his home in Louisville, Mississippi, at 10:50 a.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 27 at First Apostolic Church of Louisville with Bro. Michael Halfacre and Bro. Glynn Barker officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Interment will immediately follow the service in Murphy Creek Cemetery.

Born to Vivian and Hermie Lee Halfacre on May 13, 1933, his 89 years were totally filled with joy and blessings from God. His faithful beloved wife, Mavis Reed Halfacre, lived right by his side caring for, nurturing, and dressing her man until he drew his last breath. Arthur grew up in the Crystal Ridge-Boon community and attended Bond School graduating in 1953. Arthur and Mavis began a school yard courtship at Bond School and married in 1955. Arthur worked in the automotive manufacturing industry in Detroit, Michigan, a few years like so many young men during that time, returning to Louisville where he began operating heavy equipment for his father-in-law, J. T. Reed. In 1959, he began his 54-year career at Taylor Machine Works starting downtown in the machine shop with the founder of Taylor Machine Works, Mr. W. A. Taylor, Sr. Arthur moved into Parts and Service after the big plant was built and enjoyed many good years dealing with the servicemen and Taylor customers all over the state of Mississippi. He had part numbers in his head that no longer existed in parts catalogs. He was given most of the calls when people particularly had an old or ancient machine needing Taylor parts. He was cool, calm, and collected and tried to see the good in every situation and in every person he dealt with.

Arthur and Mavis built their home in 1959 and lived in Louisville all his life gardening, farming, raising his family, and being a fine example to his many nieces, nephews, and even neighborhood children. He hustled through his chores on Saturdays at home so he could take up time with his young’uns taking them hunting, farming, or swimming. Being an engineer at heart, he rebuilt his own engines, fixed his own automobiles, and created most of the special tools and gadgets he needed to make home life or farm life work better for his purpose. He was a man with a great talent for the ground and his garden grew sumptuously every year. He kept his life as clean as he kept his garden and he gardened a little while every day. Steady. Arthur Halfacre was steady. Tried and true. Dependable and rock solid. Arthur loved God, his family, other people, and he loved life. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed in this remaining life.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Mavis Reed Halfacre; and his sons, Michael Halfacre and wife, Pat, of Starkville, Mississippi; and Paul Halfacre of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Pop” to his six grandchildren: Ethan, Kari, Tyson, Preston and wife, Katie, Daniel and wife, Kaytlyn, and Hagan Halfacre; as well as his five great-grandchildren: Sawyer, Micah, Avey Clay, Jachin, and Eben. Arthur also leaves behind his sister, Nita Halfacre Hartness and his brother, Jimmy (Gina) Halfacre; in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Clytee Halfacre Clark; an infant brother, Johnny Halfacre; and his daughter-in-law, Deborah Johns Halfacre.

Serving as pallbearers are Ethan Halfacre, Tyson Halfacre, Daniel Halfacre, Hagan Halfacre, Jody Blumenfield, and John DePriest.

Memorials in honor of Arthur may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at stjude.org/donate.

Charlotte learned to love the outdoors and embraced fresh air at every chance. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1963 and the next day, married her husband of 59 years, Larry McCullouch. The biggest loves of her life, her children, Charles L. McCullouch, Jr., Marla Jackson, and Joshua McCullouch. followed. She became their first and best friend and created a warm, nurturing, and loving environment for them. She instilled in them a passion for hard work and for following their dreams. She was an avid learner often reading Merck Manual into the night just for the thrill of learning something new! Charlotte had a keen sense of humor and indulged in a few guilty pleasures including shopping and a love for “Days of Our Lives” that spanned decades! She was always impeccably dressed and prided herself on her manicured toes and perfect hair. She had a true servant’s heart and loved the Lord. She embodied the Godly woman in Proverbs 31 and reflected it in her demeanor daily. She would do anything for her family except compromise her principles. She was a lady who loved God, her family and taking care of others. She led by example. She didn't just talk to her children about God, she went with them to church and showed them how to live life as a Christian. She was a hard worker and gave her children a strong work ethic.

She was an excellent seamstress, cook, and gardener. Her yard and garden were her pride and joy. The only thing she enjoyed more than being on her John Deere mower was cooking her delicious pound cake and chicken and dumplings and sharing these with her family, neighbors, friends, and church family. She found great joy in providing meals for others.

She worked at Spartus Corporation for over 30 years while working alongside her family on their farm. She was a member of East Louisville Baptist Church for over 50 years.
