After graduating from Ackerman High School, Jackie attended the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, Jackie met a handsome Naval ROTC cadet, who turned out to be the love of her life, and on December 19, 1969, Jackie married Steven Roy Evans.

After Steve and Jackie both graduated from Ole Miss, Steve served in the US Navy, and the couple traveled around the United States. Early on, Steve promised Jackie that they would settle in the town of her choice, and once Steve retired as a Captain in the Navy, the couple moved to Blairsville, GA, where they bought their dream home. Jackie lived her remaining years surrounded by the beauty of Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Like her mother before her, Jackie loved nature and delighted in the beauty of Earth’s majesty. Jackie was a gifted artist who captured precision in faces, flowers, and scenery. Her talent originated as a portrait artist, and years later, she captured landscapes in paintings and photography.

James Ray Terney, III

James Ray Terney, III, age 69, passed away in his home in Louisville, Mississippi, in the morning hours of Thursday, February 15, 2024.

By trade, he had been a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi, and he loved the river. Ray, to the many who loved him, was known as a good, solid guy who always stepped up to lend a hand when it was needed. With a soft, gentle spirit, he had been known to give away the shoes off his feet (much to his mother’s chagrin as she had no money to replace them at the time). He loved all of his family and was a loving father and grandfather, but loved his grandkids most—or so his daughter says. Generous to a fault to everyone, he was beyond extravagant when it came to the grandbabies—even when they grew taller than he was. He also loved his dog, Gizmo, a skittish, now on-the-lamb, poodle look-alike.

Born on August 13, 1954, to James Ray Terney, II, and Mary “Kitty” Luke Steadman in Greenville, Mississippi, he was preceded in death by his father, Ray Terney, and stepfather, Louis “Bubba” Steadman.

He is survived by his mother, Kitty, his brother Frankie (Debbie) Luke, his brother Clark Terney, all of Louisville; his sister, Sally Basco of Ruston, Louisiana; his brother Jim (Maggie) Terney of Greenville; his stepsister, Joanna (Jack) Hathcock of Little Rock, Arkansas; his son, Jason Edward Terney, and his daughter, Elizabeth Joy Terney, both of Ocean Springs; his grandsons, Nathan Beck and James Terney, and his granddaughter, Courtney Viars, all of Ocean Springs; and nephews, nieces, and a multitude of cousins.

Visitation will be Monday, February 19, at 1:00 p.m. with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi, with Brother Michael Sanders officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Murphy Creek Church Cemetery.

Dr. Harriet Elizabeth Harbour Jackson

Dr. Harriet Elizabeth Harbour Jackson of Preston, passed away peacefully February 12, 2024, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be held on February 14, 2024, from 5:00-8:00 pm at McClain-Hays Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on February 15, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the chapel at McClain-Hays Funeral Home with interment at Hailey-Richey Cemetery.

Beth, 71, was born June 15,1952, in Meridian, MS, to R.A. and Edna Harbour. She attended Scooba Elementary and graduated from Dekalb High School in 1970. She earned bachelor’s, masters’, specialist’s and doctoral degrees from Mississippi State University all in the field of education.

Dr. Jackson’s love for early childhood development, particularly reading, has inspired countless students and teachers over the past five decades. Victor Hugo once said, “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” Beth loved to ignite that spark. Watching and helping children read was her calling.

She started her career in 1974, teaching first grade in Shannon, MS. In 1977, she was chosen by Mr. George McLean, the owner/editor of the Tupelo Daily Journal, to pilot a new program that sought to put teachers’ aides in first grade classes in Lee County. This was soon introduced to Former Governor William Winter and the Mississippi Legislature. The program eventually included kindergarten and second grade and would strengthen school achievement at the earliest grade. This assistant teacher program was the model from which the Education Reform Act of 1982 was created. Dr. Jackson piloted this influential program and this allowed her to fall in love with teaching. That love continued to spread through many private and public schools, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and tens of thousands of children over the next 50 years.

Beth taught in Lee County public schools as well as Kemper County, Kemper Academy, West Lauderdale, and the MBCI. After teaching in elementary and junior high, she then found her way into administration, where she became Elementary Principal of West Lauderdale and Neshoba Central. She was also appointed Assistant Superintendent for Neshoba County. She ended her career at Mississippi State University, where she was Senior consultant of PREPS and Director of the Writing and Thinking Institute. Throughout her career, she wrote countless grants that helped expand possibilities for Mississippi’s children.

Beth was also very active at Coy Community Church, where has been a member for over 40 years. She was a choir member, director, organist and a leader of children’s church. She was a long time member of Delta Kappa Gamma as well as many other civic organizations. Beth loved people and interacting with people of all walks of life. She enjoyed Broadway plays, music, and the symphony orchestra, especially the cello and piano. She could attend a Broadway play one night and could help Tommy feed the cows or pull a calf out of the ditch the next morning and be just as happy.
She married the love of her life, Tommy, in 1971, in the chapel at Mississippi State University. As they were both graduates from there, it was only appropriate. They had no idea over the next 52 years, how much love and time they would spend rooting on the Bulldogs. She and Tommy were season ticket holders to baseball, football and basketball and rarely missed a home game. The two of them loved to travel and even attended the Final Four, College World Series, and every bowl game supporting the college they love.

Beth is survived by her husband, Tommy Jackson, daughters Jennifer (Chad) Bond and Leigh (Jesse) Yates, grandchildren Thomas, Katherine, and Henry Yates, sister, Olivia Reese, and sister in law, Jane (Gene) Livingston.
Beth is preceded in death by her father R.A. Harbour, mother Edna Brown Harbour Holloway Ford.
Pallbearers: Chad Bond, Jesse Yates, Tim Livingston. Bowen Flowers, Jefferson Gilder, Rhett Hailey, and Gene Cliburn

James Purvia "Jimmy" Dill, Jr.

James "Jimmy" Purvia Dill Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, and resilient entrepreneur, passed away on February 7, 2024. Born on January 5, 1941, in Columbus, MS, to James Purvia Dill Sr. and Juanita Lucas Dill, Jimmy lived a life marked by faith, generosity, a strong work ethic, and unwavering determination. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Younger Dill.

Raised in Columbus, Jimmy attended Robert E Lee High School, where he played Linebacker and Center for his high school football team. He continued his education at Mississippi State University, where his lifelong love for the Bulldogs began.

Always the entrepreneur and tireless worker, Jimmy established a sawmill in Carrollton, AL, a lumber brokering business in Tuscaloosa, AL., and an international trading company with offices in Tuscaloosa, AL, and Qingdao, China. He never backed down from a challenge, no matter how great. When life's ebbs knocked him down, he always got back up and went to work. He was often fond of saying, “It's not how many times you get knocked down; it's how many times you get back up.”

A man of faith, Jimmy started most days with a cup of coffee in one hand and his Bible in the other. He loved attending Sunday School and his Bible study groups. If you ever had the pleasure of stopping by his house in the morning, perhaps for a bible study or devotional, you were likely greeted with a sausage and biscuit or a fried egg sandwich.

Jimmy Dill was a tremendous father. He coached baseball because his son loved baseball, and he took up hunting because his son loved hunting. His selflessness and dedication to his wife, Janet, and son, James-Paul, were a testament to the depth of his love.

James "Jimmy" Purvia Dill Jr. will be remembered as a good man and someone who never hesitated to help those in need. His legacy is one of faith, resilience, kindness, and the enduring love he shared with his family and friends. In good times and bad, Jimmy never lost his playful sense of humor and megawatt smile.

Robert Wayne Pearson

"Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out. If you love someone you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him. All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end, but love goes on forever." I Corinthians 13:4-8A
