Roy H. Blanton

On June 2, 1932, Roy Homer Blanton was born the sixth of seven children. Roy grew up on a farm just north of Ackerman, Mississippi as the only boy in a household full of girls, his two much older brothers having already left home. He raised hogs, plowed his fields with a mule, and was so good with a hoe that the garden weeds withered in fear of him.

Roy learned to read music, sing, and attended gospel singings with his father and sisters. In his youth, he also played the taterbug mandolin with Hoyt Ming and the Pepsteppers. At the Webster County Singing at Spring Valley Baptist Church in 1952, Roy spied a pretty young girl sitting directly across the church from him. When the singing paused for “dinner on the grounds”, Roy hurried out the door nearest him, and was waiting outside the other door when the pretty girl, Elizabeth “Anne” Cox of Winona, MS, exited the church for lunch. They had their first date in Winston County, at the Harmony Baptist Church revival, where Anne played the piano. On December 5, 1953, Roy and Anne were married.

A few years later, they welcomed their first child, a son, Alton, into the world. The following year, they had their first daughter, Linda. Less than a year later, Betty arrived earlier than expected. After the scare of the premature birth of their second daughter, they skipped a year, then had another son, Cecil. Thinking that they had completed their family, they were surprised by the arrival of another girl, Nancy, five years later.

They raised their children while he worked at Babcock & Wilcox in West Point, MS. Roy said, “While I was working at B&W, my wife taught our children to sing. That became known as ‘The Blanton Family Singers’.” He enjoyed talking about those years of driving his family to sing throughout most of the Southeastern US.

Growing and working a huge garden with the family was a large part of his life. Hunting and fishing went along with those huge gardens/fields, but the gospel singing his five children did for many years was among his most cherished memories. He would say, “I just drove the bus.” He loved his family, and they loved him. They will always remember him as the hardest working man they ever knew, the one with the quickest wit, and the funniest stories and songs!

On October 23, 2023, Roy departed his earthly home to join his beloved Anne at Jesus’ feet. As Roy so often said at the end of a long visit or call, “Bye, for now.”

When some leave us, they leave a hole. This little man left a crater.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Anne” Blanton, his parents, Berry “Homer” Blanton and Lillian “Myrtle” Cork Blanton, two brothers: Herbert Blanton and Brice Blanton, and two sisters: Lavina O’Bannon and Sarah Lou Castens.

Roy is survived by two sons: Alton (Cheryl) Blanton of Ackerman, MS, and Cecil Blanton of Ackerman, MS, three daughters: Linda (Tommy) Cauthen of Hobbs, NM, Betty-Marie (Byron) Reid of Westmoreland, TN, and Nancy (Allen) Brown of Watertown, TN, two sisters: Norma Shaw of Gore Springs, MS and Lillie Timothy of Mobile, AL, seven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

Johnny Ray Hemphill

Johnny Ray Hemphill was born on the 9th of April, 1946 in Louisville, Mississippi, to James Henry and Juanita Reed Hemphill. He was the first of four children and the only boy. Johnny grew up in the Ellison Ridge community, and, like so many other young Winston Countians during that time, had to help keep the family farm going and worked in the cotton fields. He always said he never knew they were poor. Everyone was poor back then. After graduating from Nanih Waiya in 1964, he headed north to Detroit to find work. During his time there, he met and married Pauline Ruth Jones.

His country came calling in December 1965 and Johnny was drafted into the United States Army where he was trained as a cook. Being the only male child made him ineligible for service overseas in Vietnam. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he fed many of the men training there, a number of which were from back home in Winston County.

Upon the end of his enlistment, he returned to Detroit where he and Pauline started their family with the births of three of their four sons, James who was stillborn in 1967, Jerry in 1968, and Jason in 1974. In 1976, the decision was made to move back to Winston County to escape the big city and raise their sons in the country. They settled in a rental house in Ellison Ridge for a time while Johnny worked hard to save for a place of their own. Not long after in 1977 the youngest son Jimmy was born.

Johnny was soon able to find the place we all called home in the Calhoun Community where he raised his three sons, cows, chickens, and his prized tomatoes. During that time, he worked in the metal fabrication business, maintenance at TRW, and finally as a millwright at the particleboard mill for Georgia Pacific/Roseburg until he retired.

In retirement, Johnny found joy in gardening, growing his tomatoes and socializing at the Warrior One Stop. He also took up beekeeping after he found a swarm of bees had moved into an old potato box. Johnny studied all he could find on raising bees. He spent hours building his hive boxes and tending to them until it got to be too much work and his health wouldn’t cooperate.

Johnny’s journey through this life came to an end on the 5th of October, 2023, after complications of a heart attack. He was surrounded by loved ones when he gained his Eternal Reward. We will all miss him dearly.

JJohnny was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Rita Hall and Shirley Pruitt, and an infant son, James Donald. He is survived by his sister Marlene (Rick) Lentz; sons: Jerry (Lucresia) Hemphill, Jason (Beth) Hemphill, all of Louisville, and Jimmy (Courtney) Hemphill of Tishomingo. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jeffrey (Stewart) Hemphill, Nathan Hemphill, Jacob (Anna) Hemphill, John Hemphill, and Megan Hemphill; five bonus grandchildren: Gracie Storment, Bryson Crawley, Brendan Smith, Jayred Smith, and Brody Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Jace and Jules Hemphill; along with many nieces and nephews.

Carol Louise Jolley was born on June 19, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, to James Dewitt Jolley and Virginia Mae Schaffner Jolley. She attended kindergarten in California, where her family had moved for a very short time. She then attended first grade in Louisville, Mississippi, and second grade in Bridgeport, Alabama, the area where her dad grew up.

Returning to the Pontiac, Michigan, area with her family in 1953, she attended the third through the seventh grades there before the family again made their permanent home back in Louisville. She then attended school in Louisville until she graduated from Louisville High School in 1963.

At LHS, she was a proud member of the “Pride of Louisville” High School Band under the direction of Mr. Bob Cochran, where she played the clarinet and served as a majorette. Also in high school, she was active in the Dramatic Club, Glee Club, 4-H, FHA, and Track, and was chosen as the “Wittiest” student and a member of Who’s Who, both in her senior year. After attending night school where she studied short hand, speed writing, and secretarial studies, in 1965 she joined the Spartus Corp. in Louisville, where she performed clerical duties and ultimately worked in Quality Assurance addressing customer service issues.

In 1968, Carol met the love of her life, Don Martin Turnipseed, who was from Ackerman and worked as a lifeguard at Choctaw Lake ‒ they were married in 1969. That same year she began a new career at Taylor Forge in Ackerman, where she was a secretary and ultimately became responsible for inventory control, payroll, and human resources. Carol cherished the members of West Union Presbyterian Church and her time there as a children’s Sunday school teacher.

In 1977, she was hired as the start-up Director of Human Resources for the newly established Hamill Manufacturing plant in Louisville (eventually TRW), and worked there alongside her sister, Glenda Jolley McMillin, as a senior manager for over 23 years before her retirement in 2000. She loved her time at Hamill-TRW and cherished her co-workers there. Since then, she has enjoyed her days back in the Highpoint community cooking for her extended family, raising her plants, being with her dogs, and serving her family as a wife, a mother and a grandmother.
