David "Butch" Hurt

 David "Butch" Hurt, 62, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Mississippi.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. A graveside service and interment will follow the visitation at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 28 at Sardis Cemetery.

Brenda Aron Johnson

Mrs. Brenda Kay Johnson, 67, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023, in Oak Ridge, TN. A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 27th, at Porter Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 1:30 P.M. at Indian Springs Cemetery, with Rev. Franklin Smith officiating. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Brenda was born August 27, 1956, in Bruce, MS. She was a supervisor at the Silver Star Casino. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Earl Johnson; her parents, Evelyn and Theron Aron; two sisters, Barbara Dale Russell and Sherry Lynn Aron; and two brothers, Randy Aron and Kenny Aron.

She is survived by daughters, Dorothea Puckett of Prentiss, MS, Brenda Carol Watkins of Clinton, TN, Kristin (John) Dickerson of Noxapater, MS, Crystal (Keith) Bridges of Meridian, MS, and Brandee (Cody) Hays of Louisville; a son, Alexander (Inez) Johnson of Clinton, TN; and her grandchildren, Roger (Hannah) Towne, Joseph (Hailey) Towne, Ausitn Criddle, Logan Johnson, Boyce Chaligoj, Steven Chaligoj, Kylie Bridges, Matthew Bridges, Bella Bridges, Maddie Edwards, Gracie Edwards, Aiden Reed, Will Ford, Kaleb McBride, Ashton Dempsey, Skylor Watkins, Ava Hays, Hayden Hays, Scarlett Hays, Alexandra Sparks, and Gabrielle Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Aiden Reed, Logan Johnson, Kaleb McBride, Roger Towne, Joe Towne, Matthew Bridges, Steven Chaligoj, and Boyce Chaligoj. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Ford and Austin Criddle.

Margie Hedgepeth

Margie King Hedgepeth, 102, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at AvonLea Retirement Community in Tupelo, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, October 1 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Reverend Casey Hughes officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the funeral home from 12 p.m. until service time. Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 2 at Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko, Mississippi.

Margie was born in Franklin County, Mississippi, on July 17, 1921, to Arthur and Annie May Wilkinson King. She was an accomplished artist; she loved painting primitive art and writing poems. Margie enjoyed baking and she was famous for her caramel cake. She also enjoyed cooking Sunday lunch for her family as long as her health allowed.

Margie is survived by her son, James Kenneth Hedgepeth and wife, Janice, of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Memaw” to her four grandchildren: Leigh Hedgepeth Jones (Jay), Lynn Hedgepeth Tedford (Sonny), James Jason Hedgepeth (Kim), and Leslie Hedgepeth White (Steven Green); her seven great-grandchildren: Chandler Jones, Chloe Jones, Lauren Napier (Jesse), Taylor Hedgepeth, Peyton Hedgepeth, Christian White (Abi), and Hailey White; as well as her four great-great-grandchildren: Hank Napier, Nell Napier, Dierks White, and Laykin White.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse James Hedgepeth, Jr.; her parents; her brother, Bill; and her sister, Maxie.

Serving as pallbearers are Jason Hedgepeth, Steven Green, Christian White, and Chandler Jones.

Robert Eugene Batte

 Robert Eugene Batte, Sr., 86, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Traceway Retirement Community Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date to honor his life.

Lucy Kathleen Hatcher Upshaw

Lucy Kathleen Hatcher Upshaw, 93, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be in Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, September 26 at 1 p.m. with Reverend Becky Smith officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 to 1 p.m. at the funeral home in Louisville. Interment will follow the service in Middleton Cemetery.

Kathleen was the only child of James Denton “Jack” and Lillie Belle Stokes Hatcher. She was born in Winston County on July 30, 1930.

She earned a business degree and worked for General Motors across the state. Upon retirement, she spent her time between her homes in Greenwood, Mississippi, and Louisville, Mississippi

An avid collector, she decorated her home with antique furniture. She enjoyed entertaining her family and friends and sharing her love for the past. She started the Stokes family reunion in 1973 by hosting the first reunion at her home. During the last fifty years, she was instrumental in the maintenance of this family tradition.

Kathleen served as the family historian for both the Stokes and Hatcher families. Her love for genealogy led her to contribute to several books written on family history. At family reunions, she would bring her extensive collection of family memorabilia to teach the younger generations about their ancestors.

She loved her family. She kept up with all family members and filled her home with pictures of her family. She loved nothing more than bragging about what her relatives were doing.

An avid reader, Kathleen owned a vast collection of historical books, cookbooks, and Biblical commentaries. Her love of cooking caused her to start a family cookbook which she added to yearly for many years. These cookbooks have become prized by family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and will be missed by a host of cousins.

Pallbearers will be Joey Holdiness, Trevor Holdiness, Kim Ray, Jay Stokes, Kade Hollingsworth, and Dale Stokes. Honorary pallbearers are Lloyd Stokes and Johnny Stokes. Memorials in honor of Kathleen may be given to Middleton Cemetery Fund.

Chester Norris Herrington Sr.

Locals say the fish in Winston County are swimming a little easier today with the passing of Chester Norris Herrington Sr. of Louisville.Chester, 95, died on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at The Carrington Nursing Center in Starkville. At the time of his passing, he was the oldest male member of First Baptist Church of Louisville.

A visitation for family and friends is planned from 9-11 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Porter Funeral Home in Louisville. A celebration of life service begins at 11 a.m. followed by burial in Louisville’s Memorial Park Cemetery. Chester was born on Jan. 31, 1928, in the House community in Neshoba County to James H. Herrington, a bi-vocational Baptist minister and Winston County mail carrier, and Lora Gordon Herrington, a housewife.

The fifth of eight brothers, Chester valued the old and new friendships he made through the years and made it a point to stay connected. Known for his loyalty, talents and humor, he enjoyed recounting stories of his youth, military career and fishing excursions.

Chester was an all-state fullback for Louisville High School and played on the Wildcats’ first state championship team in 1944. After graduation, he continued playing football at East Central Junior College. His gritty gridiron performance and proneness to frequent nose breaks earned him the nickname Hawk, a name many fondly referred to him as throughout life.

While in high school, Chester was recruited into the National Guard and went on to serve his country as a guardsman for nearly 40 years. In 1954, he married Juanita Myres of Attala County, and together they had one son, Checky.

During the Korean War, Chester was stationed in Fort Jackson, S.C., but spent most of his career at the National Guard Armory in Louisville. Trained as a general mechanic, he repaired and maintained a variety of vehicles and equipment, including Jeeps, trucks, tanks and electronics.He served in the 1st Calvary Division, the 30th Armored Division and the 31st Infantry “Dixie” Division and spent summers participating in training exercises at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg.

In the 1970s, the Armory staff made local headlines when the National Guard transported tanks to Louisville by rail. Onlookers were treated to an unexpected military parade as Chester and fellow guardsmen drove the tanks down Main Street to the Armory.

Chester was proudly patriotic and valued the relationships he developed during his military career. After retiring from the Guard in 1986, he maintained close friendships with fellow servicemen.Retiring at age 58 gave Chester more time to hone his fishing and hunting skills, and he also discovered a talent for woodworking and furniture restoration. He enjoyed building birdhouses, especially for purple martins and bluebirds, and observing nesting activity in birdhouses throughout his yard. He completed many projects for his family and gave away most of his creations as gifts.

Friends also benefited from his angling habit. Chester loved sharing the bounty of his frequent fishing trips and organized many fish fries for his friends.One of his favorite traditions was meeting friends for coffee every morning in downtown Louisville, which provided plenty of opportunities for Chester to practice another talent—storytelling. Growing up in Louisville gave him plenty of material as he recounted the people and experiences that enriched his life. “Never met a stranger” is a phrase that fit Chester perfectly. No matter where he went, he greeted everyone as a friend.

Chester loved sharing news and photos of his family, following MSU athletics, and listening to music, especially gospel and country, and kept his CD collection near until the end of his life.In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Juanita M. Herrington, and seven brothers: Charles Herrington, Jim Herrington, Max Herrington, Rufus Herrington, Connice Herrington, Gerald Herrington and Billy Herrington.

He is survived by his son, Checky Herrington, and his wife, Chellie, of Starkville; two grandchildren, Sara Adams (David) of Memphis, Tenn., and Daniel Herrington (Lucila) of Miami Beach, Fla.; four great grandchildren, Hannah Grace and Caleb Adams and Isabella and Valentina Herrington; several nieces and nephews and countless friends.

The family is grateful to the amazing staff at Bee Hive Homes for nine years of encouragement and support of Chester’s cowbell ringing, Bingo winning, junk food eating and lively treks around the center in his motorized chair. Special thanks to the sweet workers at The Carrington and Team Holton Homecare for their love and care for Chester in his final days.

Ricky Vowell

Ricky Vowell, 67, passed away on September 21, 2023, at Baptist Medical Center—Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi. Funeral services will be in Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, September 24 at 3 p.m. with Reverend Wayne Hill officiating. Ricky was born December 13, 1955, to Leroy and Mary Lou Vowell in Louisville. He was a member of West End Baptist Church of Louisville. For 27 years, Ricky has worked in the maintenance department at Winston Medical Center. He was very devoted to his loving wife as he became her caregiver; and, he was an awesome father and grandfather. He was always willing to share and would have given you anything he had that you needed.


Ricky is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary Vowell; his daughter, Mary Anne Johnson and husband, Berry; and his son, Ronnie “Buzzy” Johns all of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Rick Rick” to his five grandchildren: Leighanne (Doug) King, Shey Tate, Casey (Midori) Johnson, Michael Johns, and Barley Johns; as well as his six great-grandchildren: Bryce King, Bentley King, Talan King, Brodie Tate, Luca Johnson, and Noah Johnson. Ricky is also survived by his brother, Barry Vowell and wife, Belinda; and his “brother uncle” Travis Vowell; in addition to his nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kristi Johnson; and his parents.

Jimmy A. Black

Jimmy A. Black, 75, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at his home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 20 at Shiloh Baptist Church with Reverand Jay Murphy officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Shiloh Cemetery.

Jimmy was born in Winston County, Mississippi, on November 27, 1947, to Hosea and Elgie Mayo Black. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He retired from Georgia Pacific as a supervisor. Jimmy had a portable sawmill and he enjoyed sawing the lumber then making various things out of the wood. He was very talented in his wood working and could build anything. He loved being outdoors enjoying time with his animals and gardening.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Kathy Black Johnsey and husband, John, of Starkville, Mississippi; and his son, Barry A. Black and wife, Toni, of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Pap Paw” to his grandchildren: Abi (Ford) Polk, Ivy Black, Natalie Jones, and Dalton Anthony. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Kay Mayo Black; his parents; and his sister, Carol Jean Black McCool.

Serving as pallbearers are Dalton Anthony, John Johnsey, David Mayo, Lamar Mayo, Kevin Stanley, and Chris VanLandingham.

Charlye Sue Burton

Charlye Sue Lampley Burton, 95, formerly of Noxapater, Mississippi, died September 18, 2023, in Fort Myers, Florida, with her sons holding her hands, passing peacefully in her sleep just three weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday. She was born on August 31, 1928, in Noxapater to the late Bernice and Edgar Lampley. She was an incredibly loving mother, a devoted and caring friend to many, and an infectiously sweet and charming lady to everyone she met.

Survivors include her son, Edgar Leon Burton (Roy Gibson) of Sanibel Island, Florida, sister-in-law, Bettie Agnes Lampley, nephew, John Webb Lampley, Jr. (Leigh), and niece, Elizabeth Lee
Lampley, all of Vaughan, Mississippi; and numerous other family members scattered throughout the country.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved husband, Leon Burton (of 42 years); and her siblings: sister, Mary Gwendolyn and brothers, Edgar Lee “E.L.” and John Webb Lampley.
Charlye Sue had a great love for all of her extended family and her family of friends. She was a woman of strong faith and belief in God and was a life-long member of Noxapater Baptist Church. All of her family and friends were blessed with many years of good times with great memories that will be cherished forever.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Noxapater Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm at Noxapater Baptist Church following the visitation. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Baptist Cemetery in Noxapater.

Jean Eaves Nall

Jean Eaves Nall, a native of Winston County, born in 1930, transitioned from this life at 93, on August 27, 2023. She was the middle child of seven, born at home which her dad, Henry Arthur Eaves built. Her mother was Ruby Hooks Eaves.

She attended Bond High School and graduated as Salutatorian of her class. Jean also attended Draughon’s Business College in Jackson and began her career which spanned 64 years. She worked for attorneys, a Federal Magistrate, and a Federal Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi. She then worked during 32 sessions of the Mississippi legislature, retiring in 2012.

Jean was a long time member of Parkway Baptist Church where she taught the same Sunday school class for over 40 years. She was also a long-time volunteer at Mississippi Baptist Health Systems.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Major (ret) Aldert S. Nall II, mother and father, three brothers, Henry Eaves of Southfield, MI; Welton Eaves of Baltimore, MD, and Harry Eaves of Louisville, MS. Three sisters, Mildred Arnett of Brandon, MS., Jackie Bunch of Charlotte, NC, and Peggy Cockrell of Louisville, MS. Also her sister-in-law, Dean Eaves of Louisville, MS.

Jean is survived by her children, Aldert S Nall, III, wife Karen, grandson Aldert S. Nall IV; Lucia Lynn Nall, wife Dr Cyndi Undesser, and family friend loved like a daughter, Judy Ketchens.
Also many nieces and nephews who she counted as her own and to whom we have been blessed to call cousin. Thank you for your support both emotionally and spiritually.
Because of her giving nature, Jean has donated her remains to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for medical research.

There will be a Memorial Service Oct 7 @ 11:00 AM at Parkway Baptist Church in Clinton Mississippi.

Kari M. Boatner

Services for Kari M. Boatner will be held Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. from McClain-Hays Chapel with Rev. Scott Boatner and Rev. Jaylon Hundley officiating. Mrs. Boatner, 61, of Philadelphia, MS, died Wednesday, September 13, 2023. Kari was a native of Philadelphia, MS and a longtime resident of the Arlington community of Neshoba County. She worked as a secretary with her husband at Scott Boatner Construction and Scott Boatner Ministries and was a pastor’s wife at God’s House (West Philadelphia Baptist Church) in Philadelphia. Kari was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include husband, Scotty Boatner of Philadelphia; sons, Matthew (Allison) Boatner and Micah (Jodi) Boatner all of Philadelphia; grandchildren, William, John Scott, Joseph and Hannah; and brother, Todd McMahan of Philadelphia.

Kari was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth McMahan and her mother, Jimmie Pearson.

Bill Bryant, Jr.

Ray Allen Cockrell

Ray Allen Cockrell, 88, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 16 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Rev. Zach Eaves and Rev. Mike Fuller officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service at Murphy Creek Cemetery with Rev. Mark Mayo officiating.

Ray was born June 10, 1935, to Les and Ethel Conn Cockrell in Mashulaville, Mississippi. He was a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. Ray, along with his late wife, Peggy, were responsible for the care and upkeep of Murphy Creek Cemetery for over 20 years. Ray was a hard worker…he worked away from home from the time he was 12 years old until his retirement from the Mississippi Department of Transportation after more than 30 years of service. He loved being outdoors especially hunting and fishing; but bird hunting was his passion. Ray dearly loved Peggy, his wife of 60 years; as well as all his family. On several different occasions, he was named Cattleman of the Year for Winston County. He was an avid Ole Miss football fan.

Ray is survived by his sister, Doris Smith and husband, C. Q.; his brother Will “Junior” Cockrell and wife, Dorothy; and special friend, Marie Shaw, all of Louisville. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family members, and friends. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; an infant daughter, Elizabeth Cockrell; his parents; and two siblings, Thelma (Freeman) Smith and Mose (Thelma) Cockrell.

Serving as pallbearers are Ricky Tanksley, Randy Tanksley, Rylee Pearson, Lee Pearson, Kenny McCulloch, and Zach Eaves. Raymond "Ray" Popec

Raymond “Ray” Popec, 70, passed away surrounded by his family that dearly loved him on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at his home in Preston, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, September 17 at Butler Pentecostal Church in Shuqualak, Mississippi, with Reverand Ronnie Cartwright and Reverand Bryan Madison officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Butler Cemetery in Shuqualak with Reverand William Shepheard officiating.

Ray was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Adam and Charlotte Aldridge Popec on May 30, 1953. He was a member of Butler Pentecostal Church. In the various churches that he attended in the different places he and Kay called home, Ray served in any area of the church ministry where he was needed. He was especially called to minister to the youth and was utilized as a Sunday school teacher. Ray had many interesting jobs throughout his career. For example, one of his jobs early in his working career was to read water meters for the City of Chicago. While doing this, he was able to see some magnificent homes. He later worked as a foreman at Soldier Field where he met and showed Walter Payton where the locker room was located. Ray was an avid Cubs fan, a love he inherited from his mother. In 2019, his sons, Quentin and Scott, were able to surprise him by taking him to a game between his beloved Cubs and the Astros. He enjoyed Chicago politics and believed everyone should vote in an election. Ray loved all Chicago-style food; such as Chicago-style hotdogs, kluski, and roast beef sandwiches to name a few. He loved to cook for his family and they especially loved his homemade spaghetti sauce. Another hobby was looking for antique furniture and old records at antique shops or flea markets. He had a massive collection of old records and was always on the lookout for more. Ray loved old classic cars and he enjoyed plants, which he scattered around his lawn and house. He was so much fun to be around; always laughing, ready to pull a prank, or watch one unfold! Most of all, Ray ministered to others by his wholehearted hugs that he loved to give to anyone from those he met at Wal-Mart to his church family.

Ray is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Kay Popec; his daughter, Kelly Eaves and husband, Todd, all of Preston, Mississippi; and his son, Scott Popec of Lumberton, Texas. One of his greatest joys was being “Paw Paw Ray” to his six grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Adam Popec, Morgan Popec, Jasmine Popec, Danielle Robinson, Emma Kaye Eaves, and Parker Jo Eaves; and his great-granddaughter, Macie Taylor Robinson. He is also survived by his five siblings: Larry (Laurie) Popec; Kevin Popec; Kathy (Joseph) Pecararo; Jerry Popec; and Gary (Frances) Popec. He was also “Ray Ray” to his precious great-nephews Rhett, Knox, and Tallen, with whom he enjoyed spending time; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. 

Ray was preceded in death by his son, Quentin Popec; his parents; and his brother, Robert “Bob” Popec.

Serving as pallbearers are Todd Eaves, Parker Jo Eaves, Taylor Robinson, Cody Boyd, Mason Boyd, Jodie Blumenfeld, Josh Massey, Jason McArthur, Stephen Goodin, and Able Hernandez.

Sally Marveen Moody

Sally Marveen Moody, beloved educator and devoted member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Louisville on September 12, 2023. She was born on April 21, 1935, in Louisville, the daughter of Marvin and Eunice Moody.

Marveen began her distinguished teaching career with the Jackson Public School system. Throughout her years of service, she not only taught in various schools but also served as a librarian in different locations such as Florida, Tokyo, Japan, New Orleans, Picayune, MS, and Mississippi State Universitiy. Her dedication to education continued as she taught at the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indian school until her retirement.

Marveen's passion for knowledge was evident in her own pursuit of higher education. She graduated from Louisville High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi College. Furthering her academic achievements, she obtained a Master's degree in Elementary Education and an Education Specialist degree from Mississippi State University.

Outside of her professional life, Marveen found solace and joy in various hobbies and interests. She was an active member of the Louisville Garden Club and derived immense pleasure from cultivating beautiful flowers. Time spent with her family brought Marveen great happiness and fulfillment.

Marveen will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Marvin and Eunice Moody; as well as two brothers, Paul Moody and Reverend Charles Moody.

She is survived by her nephews: Stephen (Carolyn) Moody; Stewart (Julie) Moody; and Charlie (Heather) Moody. Additionally, Marveen is survived by great nieces and nephews: Will (Bell) Moody; Elizabeth Anne (Cam) Carroll; Flint Moody; Cal Moody; Levi Moody; Fern Moody; and Ellie Moody.

Visitation services will be held on September 15, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Porter Funeral Home, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM at Porter Funeral Home, with Dr. Heath Hillman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Will Moody, Charlie Moody, Flint Moody, Cal Moody, Cam Carroll, and Steve Quinn.

Samuel T. Vickery

Samuel T. “Tony” Vickery, 85, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in Mathiston, Mississippi, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 15 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Bro. Mark Mayo officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Tony was born February 4, 1938, to Samson and Sophie McCormick Vickery in Princeton, Kentucky. He attended Murphy Creek Baptist Church and was a Mason in the Mathiston Lodge. For 20 years, he worked as a welder and fitter until his retirement from B & W in West Point, Mississippi.

Tony is survived by his children: two daughters, Pam Stedman and husband, Bruce, of Eupora, Mississippi; and Patricia Vickery (Billy Latham), of Maben, Mississippi; and his son, George Vickery and wife, Robin, of Mathiston. One of his greatest joys was being “Papa Vickery” to his four grandchildren: William Bam (Stephanie) Reeves, Megan Latham, Joshua Franks, and Krista (Eric) Hanington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Vickery; his parents; and five siblings.

Rita Bouchillon

Rita Barrier Bouchillon, 89, passed away with her loving family by her side on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 12 at Union Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Greg Thomas officiating.

Rita was born August 24, 1934, to Odell and Velma Snow Barrier. She was a member of Union Ridge Baptist Church. Rita was a retired nurse’s aide serving others at both the Winston County Medical Center and Tri-County Nursing Home. Rita was a loving wife and devoted mother who dearly loved her family. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and arranging flowers.

Rita is survived by her daughter, Marla Dell Bouchillon (Robert Spence) of Noxapater, Mississippi; and her son, Teddy Bouchillon (Tilda Bouchillon) of Fulton, Mississippi. One of her greatest joys was being “Maw Maw” to her two granddaughters, Summer and Samantha Bouchillon. 

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bobby Bouchillon and Fred Hollis; her parents; and her siblings: Van Haze Barrier, Waddell McAdory, and Wymouth Barrier.

Retha Gamble

Ms. Retha Gamble was born on February 2, 1927 to Walter Fancher and Sarah Lampkin. She passed away on August 26, 2023 at the age of 96. Taylor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wendell E. Burkes

Services for Wendell E. Burkes will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023 from Mars Hill Baptist Church in Winston County. Wendell was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He attended Arlington School, graduated from Neshoba Central in 1960 and attended Hinds Junior College. He worked as an electrician for 24 years and later as a poultry and cattle farmer for 22 years. Mr. Burkes was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church in Winston County. He loved horses, cows, sports, western movies and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Williamson Burkes; daughter, Carol Burkes (Randall Pugh); grandsons, Jimmy Estes (Dana) and Tucker Estes (Tracy); great-grandchildren, John Tucker Estes, Emerson Estes, Ellis Estes and Dawson Estes; sisters, Janice Burnette (Boyd) and Judy Endsley (the late Jerry Endsley); several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burkes was preceded in death by parents, Everette Burkes and Bonnie Kate Fondren and grandparents, Newton and Minnie Tucker and Joe and Tiny Burkes.

Pallbearers are Dan Young, Jim Estes, Randall Pugh, Steve Tucker, Marty Burkes, Brad Burnette and Joshua Drury.

Mary Lucille Fulton Williams

Services were held Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. from the North Bend United Pentecostal Church. Visitation was at the church on Monday, September 4, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. and until service time on Tuesday. Burial was in the North Bend Pentecostal Cemetery. Bro. Nathan Moore, Bro. C.L. Watford and Bro. Justin Peden officiated.

Mrs. Williams died Sunday, September 3, 2023 at her home in the North Bend Community.

She was a native and lifelong resident of the North Bend Community of Neshoba County. Ms. Williams was a home maker for most of her adult life and enjoyed raising her family especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed her flowers and gardening but mostly cooking and was known for her fried chicken and biscuits on her Sunday afternoon meals. Proverbs 31 depicts the “capable wife” who rises early, cares for her family, brings honor to her husband, runs a successful household, provides food for everyone, works hard, and is physically strong yet also characterized by wisdom, kindness, and laughter. These lines perfectly describe the many wonderful memories of our precious mother/grandmother. She was the kind of person who never seemed to sit down. She was always in the kitchen, and no one ever went hungry when visiting her. She loved people and taking care of others, she cared for her dear husband Lawrence for their entire 66 years of marriage including those last increasingly selfless years as his health began to fade. Even in her own failing health these last few years, she continued to love unconditionally and to provide an example of exemplary Christian faith. She will be greatly missed, and we will continue to hold her close in our hearts. She was a member of the North Bend United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Pearl Price, Charlotte Pilgrim, Aletha (Mike) Thomas all of Philadelphia, Diane Vincent of Louisville; 14 grandchildren, Ricky, Chris, Tammy, Penny, Misty, Tony, Ken, Jerry, Richard, Clifton, Shane, LaDawn, Michelle and Dusty; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Bozeman and Joy Littrell both of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Williams; daughters, Vicky Williams and Ina Ainsworth; parents, Henry and Bessie Fulton; sisters, Myrtis Alford, Joann Pilgrim, Margarette Kittrell and Bobbie Parker; brothers, James Fulton, Prentis Fulton and Henry Tom Fulton.

Bertha Lee (Merrit) Vickers

Bertha Lee (Merrit) Vickers of Sturgis, MS, passed awayon Saturday, September 2, 2023, at her residence in Sturgis,MS. Mrs. Vickers was born on January 9, 1918, in Sturgis,MS, to Frank and Lula (McHann) Merrit. She was 105years old. Mrs. Vickers was a devoted housewife. She was a member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bertha was very well known for her faith and love of the Lord. She had a servant’s heart and was always willing and ready to cook and spend time with anyone who wound up at her kitchen table. Her legacy was being a prayer warrior to and for her family and friends. She wanted her family to know the Lord as their Savior.

She married Bert Henry Vickers, November 28, 1935. They were constant companions, and shared a love that is an example to us all. He taught her how to shoot a gun which has led to one of her favorite hobbies.

She became famous at her 100th birthday for shooting a deer during season, and again at her 101st birthday for shooting 2 deer with one shot. She could not understand what the fuss was all about. She never wanted to draw attention to herself. She just loved life.

Other interest of hers was fishing (which was her relaxation to put a hook in the creek), sewing, gardening, cooking, reading, watching western movies, singing, playing Scrabble, sharing stories of her life which spanned so many years, and caring for others. She thought life was an adventure and a gift especially doing it with the ones she loved. She gave ALL in EVERYTHING!!

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, 11:00 a.m., at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church in Sturgis, MS. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. till service time at the church. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, MS, is in charge of all arrangements.

Mrs. Vickers is survived by 2 daughters, Klinelle Coleman of Sturgis, MS, and Kathy (Burnell) Pitts of Sturgis, MS; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Henry Vickers; her parents; 1 son and his wife, James Dale and Charlotte Ann (Thompson) Vickers; 1 son-in-law, Grady Wayne Coleman; and 7 beloved brothers and sisters.

Deidere Grimes

Deidere Grimes, 54, passed away surrounded by those who dearly loved her at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb, Mississippi, on Saturday, September 2, 2023. A memorial graveside service and interment will be held at a later date at Memorial Cemetery in Louisville.

Deidere was born in Winston County on November 17, 1968. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family. Her love of music was supported by her husband, Paul, who plays multiple instruments. Deidere was a caregiver to all with a compassionate, big heart. For example, she always went above and beyond for the powerline crews with whom her husband worked making sure everyone had all they needed. Her cornbread was a favorite of many.

Deidere is survived by her husband, Paul Shannon Grimes of New Hebron; and her mother, Beverly Bennett Hemphill of Louisville. Additionally, she is survived by her children: Andrew McDill and wife, Kenzie, of Texas; Tristen Wilson and husband, Beowulf, of Oakvale, Mississippi; her step-daughter, Morgan Thorton and husband, Chess, also of Texas; and her two sisters, Jennifer (Jeremy) Kirk; and Kimberly (Trey) McDill. One of her greatest joys was being “Mimi” to her six grandchildren: Gracie Perkins, Carter Hunt, Addilyn McDill, Summer Billingham, Justin Troy Cone, and Ozzy McDill. She was anxiously awaiting the arrival of two more grandchildren in September and January. Deidere was preceded in death by her father, Larry Hemphill; an infant son, James Derek Hunt; and her son, Justin Caleb Hunt.

Juanita Sisson Goldman

Ms. Goldman, 89 of Philadelphia, died Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Ms. Juanita was born and raised in Winston County, MS. She attended Arlington Schools and met the love of her life Archie Goldman in the 9th grade and were married four months later and they were married for 52 years until his passing. She and Archie were employed for 23 years with MS School for the Blind which was in the Madison Furniture Company and they retired in 1988. She loved her family and cooking for them and was the happiest when the family was around her dinner table. Ms. Goldman was a longtime member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Kathy Womble (Charlie) of Winston County, MS; Grandsons, Steven Womble (Tammy) Winston County, MS and Brandon Womble (Laura) of Starkville, MS; great-grandchildren, Dalton Womble (Madison), Dillon Womble (Madison), Brice Womble, Wren Womble and Whit Womble; Great-Great grandchildren, Kipp Womble, Anniston Jo Womble, Shep Womble and Jett Womble; sister-in-laws, Jimmie Ruth Sisson, Marie Myers and Dean Noel.
Ms. Goldman is preceded in death by her husband, Archie Goldman; son, Ferlon Goldman; sister, Lydia Manning; brothers, Hurbert and Breland Sisson.

Judy Kay Shumaker Hemphill

Judy Kay Shumaker Hemphill, 77, passed away peacefully at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi, on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. A memorial graveside service and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 2 in Louisville Memorial Cemetery with Bro. Trent Jaudon officiating.

Judy was born in Louisville on March 6, 1946, to Clinton and Ella Jean Clement Shumaker. She was a graduate of Louisville High School and a member of South Louisville Baptist Church. The beach was her absolute favorite place to be; and yet, she also enjoyed being in the mountains. Judy enjoyed traveling, shopping, reading her Bible and her Bible commentary. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren; and she always enjoyed any time she was with them.

Judy is survived by three sons: Timothy Ray Hemphill and wife, Jo Katherine, of Louisville; Scott Hemphill and wife, Janet, of Cookeville, Tennessee; and Mike Hemphill and wife, Delana, also of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Grandma” to her five grandchildren: Cruise (Amber) Hemphill, Tyler Hemphill, Brandon Hemphill, Josh Hemphill, and Michael Hemphill; as well as her great-grandson, Israel Hemphill.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hemphill, and an infant brother.
