Michael Scott Hill

Scott Hill, 62, of Sturgis, Mississippi, passed away on July 28, 2023.

Scott was born one of three children in Hinds County to George and Jennie Hill on May 27, 1961. He graduated from Sturgis High School in Sturgis, Mississippi. Scott attended Wood Junior College and owned Hill’s Cabinets. On March 31, 1984, he married Annice McLeod in Sturgis, Mississippi. He was a member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church.

Scott is preceded in death by his father and granddaughter (Sarah).

He is survived by his wife, Annice, of 39 years, sisters Missy (Stan) Arrington, Ginger (Bo) Keith, sister-in-law Mary (Robert) Harrison, brother-in-law Lee (Pam) Frederick, children Nikki (Michael) Davis and John Michael (Emily) Hill, grandchildren Phillip and Ben Davis, Frankie and Stella Hill. Nieces and Nephews Mandy (Will) Schaub, Thomas (Anna) Arrington, Will and Ty Keith, Garrett Harrison, Tyler, Kaylee and Will Fredrick, Maddie and Matthew Upton. Great nieces and nephews Luke, Avery and Kate Arrington, Roper Schaub and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Scott was known for his woodworking craftsmanship. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.

Visitation was at Morgan Chapel Baptist Church in Sturgis, Mississippi on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 10:00 am and the funeral service immediately followed at 11:00 am.

Pallbearers were Charles Brown, Greg Brown, Mark Gillis, James Hill, Robert Harrison, Lee Fredrick.

Dana Lynn Boyles Rives

Dana Lynn Boyles Rives, 59, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital—Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi. Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2023, in the Meadowview Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Starkville. Visitation will be the day of the service from 5:30 p.m. until service time in the church fellowship hall.

Lynn was born on September 10, 1963, in Waynesboro, Mississippi, to J. D. Boyles and Patricia Harrison Boyles (Reynolds). Growing up, she was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church; more recently, she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Starkville. She was a graduate of Mississippi State University where she majored in Elementary Education. Lynn taught pre-school until the birth of her first child; after which she enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. With her outgoing and friendly personality, Lynn never met a stranger and was very much a “people” person. She loved the mountains and solving puzzles, but most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Ricky Rives; her mother, Pat Reynolds and husband, Philip, all of Starkville. She also leaves behind her three children: Matthew Rives also of Starkville, Daniel Rives and wife, Deianira “Nira”, of Maben, Mississippi; and Sarah Rives of Roxie, Mississippi. One of her greatest joys was being “Nonna” to her two grandchildren: Kayden Combs and Phoenix Rives. Lynn is also survived by her sister, Julie Boyes of Mantee, Mississippi; her brother, Lee Reynolds, of Alexandria, Virginia; and her nephew, Joseph MacGown. She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, E. P. and Maysel Harrison.

Seth Maurice Howard

Seth Maurice Howard, 95, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023, at his residence in Flowood, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2023, in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville with Rev. Tim West and Rev. Mike Dowd officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 1:00 p.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow the service in Rural Hill Cemetery.

Maurice was born on May 14, 1928, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, to Seth Frank Howard and Icie Lee Pennington Howard.

Maurice is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Black Howard of Flowood; his children: Brenda Howard Edgin and husband, Richard, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Seth Maurice Howard, Jr. and wife, Martha Jo “Dee”) of Ridgeland, Mississippi; and Michelle Howard Herring and husband, Patrick, of Crownsville, Maryland; and his sister, Glenda Fay Greer of Vidalia, Louisiana. One of his greatest joys was being “Papaw” to his grandchildren: Cassandra (Richard) Ruley; Collin (Alex) Edgin; Richard Edgin, III; Madeline (Joseph) Wilson; Joseph Seth Howard; Emily Katherine Herring; and Ethan Patrick Herring; as well as his nine great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Corbett Edgin; great-grandson, Alexander Edgin Ruley; his parents; and his siblings: Mildred White, Milton Howard, Margo Bozeman, Marlin Howard, and Garlin Howard.

Serving as pallbearers are Collin Edgin, Richard Edgin, III, Ethan Herring, Joe Howard, Charles Plattner, and Joseph Wilson.

Elvis Lamar Kinard, Jr.

 Elvis Lamar Kinard, Jr. (“PeeWee”), 67, of Starkville, MS passed away July 26, 2023 from sudden heart failure. Born January 4, 1956 to Elvis Lamar Kinard, Sr. and Peggy Gregg Kinard in Starkville, and graduated from Louisville High School class of 1974. The second oldest of 6, his siblings are Danny Ray Kinard, Teresa Hill, Deborah Kinard Weaver, Robert Preston Kinard, and Cynthia Shaffer. He found the love of his life Janice Gentry Kinard and was married 43 years.

A man of much talent and strong work ethic, he began with family business Gregg Construction and followed that to Rackley Oil Company. His finest years were with Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District where his 25-year career culminated in the role of Maintenance Director for the district.

He and Janice were blessed with two sons and daughter in law: Elliott McClure Kinard, 40, and Kirk Randall Kinard, 28 and; Ann Douglass Kinard.

Elvis proudly supported his wife and both sons through college education at Mississippi State University. He was a true friend to the people he shared life with -- in work, golf, and hunting -- and enjoyed these pursuits even through his last days. He will be remembered as one always ready to help family and friends alike in their time of need.

He is survived by his wife Janice, sons, Elliott and Kirk, and siblings, Danny Ray, Teresa, Deborah, Robert Preston, and Cynthia.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 28, 2023 from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS, with the funeral service following in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Martin Lifer will conduct the service. Burial will be in Oaklimb Cemetery in Crawford, MS.

The pallbearers are as follows: Paul Brown, Bill McDavid, Mark Gentry, Bailey Newell, Keegan Burton, and Ray Rushing.

Mary Clark Kennedy

Mary Frances Clark Kennedy, age 78, and passed away on July 27, 2023, at her home in Louisville, Mississippi. 

Mary was born in Winston County on February 3, 1945, to Burgess Lee and Lovie Sharp Clark. The youngest of four girls, she grew up surrounded by family on what was known as “Clark Hill”. She always looked up to her older sisters, they were truly best friends. She lived her life as a Christian believer always helping and caring for others. She was a member of Poplar Flat Baptist Church.

In high school, on a date...Mary met her true love, Franklin Kennedy. Although she didn’t realize it at that time, Franklin was there. It happened to be a “double date” and she was on that date with Franklin’s friend. They quickly realized their interest for each other. Married in 1963, Franklin has been by her side ever since. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past June.

Family was everything to Mary. She was a devoted mother to three children, Steve, Andy and Julie. One of her greatest joys was being “Mimi” to her six grandchildren. She was the biggest cheerleader to her children and grandchildren and influenced the lives of many other young people in the area that she taught in school.

Mary lived her entire life in Louisville, MS and was a retail business owner and active community volunteer. She owned Margie’s clothing store downtown for many years and taught school at Fair Elementary for 24 years before retiring. Over the years, she travelled throughout the South supporting her family’s activities and sporting events. She was a fixture at UAB and Ole Miss basketball games for many years.

Mary is survived by her husband, James Franklin Kennedy of Louisville, MS. Her sons, Steve and wife, Juanita of Ridgeland, MS, Andy and wife, Kimber of Birmingham, AL and daughter, Julie Scalfaro and husband, Frank of Tampa, FL. Her six grandchildren: Keely Kennedy, Meagan Kennedy, Keaton Kennedy, Kaitlyn Kennedy, Caroline Scalfaro & Cash Scalfaro.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Marjorie Taylor, Jean Russell and Nancy Clark.

Serving as pallbearers are Dell Coward, Ronnie Rushton, Norman White, Michael Alex Hodges, Heath Dyer and Trace Dyer.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 30, 2023 at 2:00 at Poplar Flat Baptist Church in Louisville. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 with Rev. Mike Childs and Rev. Doug Wise officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Flat Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edwina M. Wise

Edwina Morris Wise of Ackerman, MS, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at her home in Ackerman, MS. Mrs. Wise was born on October 24, 1928, in Columbia, Mississippi, to William Mack, Sr. and Ora (Coulter) Morris.  She was 94 years old.

After graduation from high school, Mrs. Wise attended The W in Columbus and the University of Alabama. Graduating with a master’s degree, she began her career in food service as a Registered Dietician and worked in that capacity in various locations. She worked with Forest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS, Walthall County Hospital in Tylertown, MS, the health department in McComb, MS, and MSU Extension Service in Starkville, MS.  After retiring, she dedicated her time, talents, and service to her husband’s ministry. She was active in her church and served as Sunday School teacher and mission ministries. Mrs. Wise was a dedicated wife, mother, and friend. Her life reflected the love she had for her family and her Lord.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with Dr. Danny Irvin officiating.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, beginning at 12:00 noon till service time at 2:00 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wise is survived by one daughter, Becky Doss of Mathiston, MS; two sons, Joe Wise of Hattiesburg, MS, and Johnny (Rhonda) Wise of Mathiston, MS; one sister-in-law, Edna Morris of Sugarland, TX; one niece, Cathy Patton of Sugarland, TX; 4 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Jerry Wise, her parents, and one brother, William Mack Morris, Jr.

Hubbert “Hub” Hisaw

Hubbert “Hub” Hisaw, 60, passed away Friday, July 21, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital—Golden Triangle in Columbus, Mississippi, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 24 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Rook officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in New Hope Methodist Cemetery in Louisville.

Hub was born in Winston County to Johnny Ray and Maxine Stanley Hisaw on August 28, 1962. He was a retired carpenter.

Hubbert is survived by his daughter, Linda Fuqua of Como, Mississippi; and his son, Scotty Hisaw, of Greenwood, Idaho. He is also survived by his sister, Janet (Bob) Griffin of Brandon, Mississippi; two brothers, Ray Dean (Angie) Hisaw and Johnny Mack Hisaw; and his life partner, Tammy Pigg, all of Louisville; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. One of his greatest joys was being “Grandpaw” to his two granddaughters, Annabella Fuqua and Lydia Fuqua, and his grandson, Jeremy Fuqua. Hub was preceded in death by his mother, Maxine Stanley Hisaw; his father, Johnny Ray Hisaw; and an infant sister, Nora Jean Hisaw.

Brenda Vowell Fuller

Funeral services for Ms. Brenda Vowell Fuller will be held at 3 PM Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Christian Life Tabernacle with Rev. Tim Vowell, Rev. Jeff Lee, Rev Lloyd Adcock, Rev. Ms. Fuller, 66, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023 at Neshoba General Hospital in Philadelphia, MS. She lived most of her life in Winston County. She worked as the Activity Director at Neshoba County Nursing. She was a member of Christian Life Tabernacle, and her hobbies were reading and cooking.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fuller; parents, James and Mamie Vowell; step-granddaughter, Bailey Fuller.

Survivors include stepsons, Chris Fuller (Sandy), Sammy Fuller (Shelia), Joseph Fuller (Kalynn), Mark Fuller (Sharee), Daniel Fuller (Daniele); sisters, Shirley Wolverton, Geneva Williamson (David), Carolyn Nowell (Ronald); brothers, Jimmy Vowell (Tressie), Linwood Vowell (Meg), Scotty Vowell (Nita); (18) step-grandchildren; (7) step-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ty'rekes Jy'quan Smith

Ty'rekes Jy'quan Smith, 23, of Louisville, MS., passed on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 in Louisville, MS. Funeral Service will be Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 2 p.m., from Beck Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday, from 4 until 6 p.m., from the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Louisville Memorial Cemetery. Beck Funeral Home of Louisville in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Crowell

John Davis Crowell (Johnny) met his Lord face to face on July 13, 2023. There he joined his beloved wife of 65 years a mere 2 months after her passing Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 17th, at First Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Childs officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny was born in Winston County on April 5, 1939 to Frank and Myrtis Crowell. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 65 years, Claire Crowell; son Doug Crowell; brother Billy Crowell; and his sister Louise Cravens.

He leaves behind his son, David Crowell of Atlanta, GA; grandson Jon Richard Crowell (April) of Flowood, MS; great granddaughter Causey of Flowood, MS; niece Claire DeVitalis (Charles) of Austin, TX; nephew Jimmy Johnson (Dianne) of Long Beach, MS; niece Billy Joy Tucker (Jeff) of Eldridge, Alabama; and niece Kimberley Higgason (Neil) of Louisville, MS. Johnny also leaves behind cousins, other loving relatives, and a group of special friends that have meant so much to him during his life.

He was always remembered as a hard worker, even as a child. He began his working career as a helper to Hoyt McKay, a brick mason. Later, he worked for McCully’s Grocery and at age 20, he joined Southern Natural Gas Company where he worked for 35 years.

Johnny enjoyed sports and coached little league baseball teams for over twelve years. Once, when the school was planning to destroy pee wee football uniforms, he got them and had one for all of the boys in the neighborhood. One of those boys even went on to play football for Ole Miss. If Johnny wasn’t working or playing ball with the neighborhood kids, you could find him in his little red shop working on his latest carpentry project.

Johnny always felt led to serve his community. He was on the Housing Committee for many years, served on the Zoning Committee, was an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Economic Development program.

Johnny grew up in Murphy Creek Baptist Church, but after he and Claire married, he began attending First Methodist Church. He later joined and raised his boys in this church. Johnny was dedicated to his church and served in many capacities including the Administrative Board and as a volunteer in the Nursery Department. It has been said about Johnny, “If he tells you he will do something, he will and he has never been known to tell a lie.” Johnny will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pallbearers will be David Crowell, Jon Richard Crowell, Jerry Tiller, Roger Caperton, Rodney Bagwell, and Alan Krajewski.

Inez “Izzy” Reed Blumenfeld

 Inez “Izzy” Reed Blumenfeld was born in Louisville, Mississippi, on January 19, 1942, to John Tyson “J. T.” and Eddie Mae Roberson Reed. Inez was the fourth of their seven children. Tentatively, graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Memorial Cemetery in Louisville with Bro. Brandon Frazier officiating.

Inez left this world on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, to enter her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be remembered as one who was always seeking to serve and always thinking of others before herself. She spent and dedicated her life to her two children which took great courage and sacrifice, always showing unwavering love and never complaining. Not only was she a devoted mother, but also grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will forever be missed.

Inez was a member of Bethlehem Church in Starkville, Mississippi, and a member and avid supporter of Christian Friends Foundation from its inception in 1998.

Inez is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Reed; two sisters, Eloise Reed Hudson and Dorothy “Dot” DePriest; and brothers-in-law, Billy DePriest, Kenneth Hudson, and Arthur Halfacre.

 Survivors include her children, Jody, of Louisville, Mississippi; and Reed of Clewiston, Florida; sisters: Mavis Halfacre of Louisville, Joanne (Maxey) Peterson of Louisville, and Gwen (Gary) Cooper, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; brother, Bobby (Sharon) Reed of Louisville; and brother-in-law, Millard DePriest, of Louisville; six grandchildren, Nathaniel Blumenfeld, Caleb Blumenfeld, Jonathan Blumenfeld, David Blumenfeld, and Michael Blumenfeld, all of Campbellsville, Kentucky, and Justin Blumenfeld of Russell Springs, Kentucky; and two great-grandchildren, Alec and Adicus of Russell Springs, Kentucky. In addition, she leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Tammy Rogers Mayo

Tammy Rogers Mayo, age 55, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at her home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 14 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Mayo officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Shiloh Cemetery in Louisville.

Tammy was born January 16, 1968, to Roy and Judy Sullivan Rogers. She was a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. Tammy enjoyed being outdoors especially working in her flowers, mowing grass, or fishing. She also enjoyed talking on the phone to her family and friends checking on them several times a day. She like to get out and ride looking around and going places; but, she wanted to be home by night time.

Tammy is survived by her husband, Wayne Mayo; two daughters, Laken Fulcher; and Logan Brown and husband, Tripp; and her son, Justin Fulcher, all of Louisville; and two step-daughters, Tabitha Mayo-Linley and husband, Mitchell, of Starkville, Mississippi; and Nickie Mayo-Burks and husband, Jarad, of Noxapater, Mississippi. She also leaves behind her brother, Keith “Mo” Rogers and wife, Marsha also of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Nae Nae” to her grandchildren: Sadie and Alex Brown; Landon, Hunter, Tanner, and Aiden Burks, and Levi Reed. Tammy is also survived by her loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sharron Kaye Stokes

Sharron Kaye Stokes, age 68, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Thursday, July 13 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bert Jones and Peyton Jones officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow the service in Memorial Cemetery in Louisville.

She was Sharron Kaye, Momma, Nana, and Kaye Kaye to many. Each name represented a special role...daughter, sister, niece, cousin, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend; and she lived each role to the fullest. It didn’t matter what you called her, whether you were family or not, to be in her life was to be her family; no matter the time or distance between. Her home was your home. She loved her family and friends with all she had. She was kind to everyone. She was hardworking, it was the only way she knew. She often worked multiple jobs to provide for her family. She was strong and tough, always making life’s struggles seem easier by drawing her strength from the Lord. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved fishing and shared her passion with her friends, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Music brought her peace and joy; her family has many memories of singing and dancing with her. She was an avid writer and has a large collection of poems, stories, memories, and favorite scriptures to share with her family. She will be missed immeasurably but the memories shared with her will be treasured.

Sharron is survived by two daughters, Charity Holdiness and husband, Sean; and Holly Jones and husband, Rev. Bert Jones, all of Louisville. She also leaves behind her brother, James “Stokey” Stokes; and her life-long friend, Brenda Lovorn, both of Louisville. One of her greatest joys was being “Nana” to her grandchildren: Lena (Andrew) Rodman, Peyton (Kenzie) Jones, Brady (Mattie) Jones, Hanna (Hugh) Collins, Koby Hillhouse, Avery Hillhouse, Ryan (Lane) McTaggart, Reagan (Bo) Canton, Rylee (Andy) Blakeney, and Rivers Holdiness; and to her six great-grandchildren: Elliott Rodman, Juelie McTaggart, Parker Collins, Bode Jones, Joah Jones, and Selah Jones. Sharron is also survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, James Theo “J. T.” Hillhouse; her parents; and two sisters, Anita Darlene Coker and Cynthia Stokes.

David McKnight

David L. McKnight passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS.  David was born September 15, 1943, in Ackerman, MS, to Orville and Claudine (Garner) McKnight. He was 79 years old and a member of Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman, MS. After graduating from Mississippi State in 1965, David began work at Ingalls Ship Building in Pascagoula, MS where he worked as a Piping Systems Designer. 

Through the years he worked in design and construction on almost any kind of plant and manufacturing facility imaginable. After retiring he did part time contract work, but he always made time in between jobs to enjoy family and renovate old houses, which was another favorite past time.

Memorial services for David will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, 4:00 p.m., at Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Robin Sutphen and Rev. Jerry Lawson.

David is survived by his wife, Vicki Rae (Collins) McKnight of Ackerman, MS; one daughter, Nissa (Robin) Sutphen of Eagan, MN;  one son, Michael McKnight of Lake Pontchartrain, LA;  two sisters, Merlin Smith of Porter, TX, and Sharon Stevens of Ackerman, MS; one brother-in-law, Frank Black of Ackerman, MS;  and four grandchildren, Dylan McKnight, Eleanora Sutphen, Maggie Sutphen, and Hattie Sutphen.

David is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Linda Black.

Janet DeNeice “Neice” Jackson

Janet DeNeice “Neice” Jackson of Ackerman, MS, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at her residence in Ackerman, MS. “Neice”, as she was so fondly known, was born on August 16, 1945, in Thomastown, Mississippi, to John and Edna Jewell (Ethridge) Cummings. She was 77years old.

Private family graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m.on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Concord Baptist Cemetery near Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Brian Wells officiating.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS.

Neice is survived by her husband, Kenneth Jackson of Ackerman, MS; 1 daughter, Paula (Gary) Harrison of Ackerman, MS; 1 son, Michael Jackson of Ackerman, MS; 1 sister, Ruby Ann Cummings of Mathiston, MS; 3 grandchildren, Austin (Hailey) Flake and daughters, Harper, Haden, and Hallie of Ackerman, MS; Dallas (Hannah) Flake of Pensacola, FL; Ashleigh Jackson and daughter, Harper of Madison, MS.

Bobby Frank Steely Jr.

A memorial service for Mr. Bobby Frank Steely Jr. will be held at a later date.

Mr. Steely, 74, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023 at his home in Louisville, MS. He lived most of his life in Neshoba and Winston County. He married Ms. Patricia Vanhorn January 13, 1973.

Mr. Steely is preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Frank Steely Sr., and Jean Battle; brother, Ronnie Battle.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Steely of Louisville, MS; daughters, Penny Irwin (Billy) of Renfro, MS, Rita Price (Richard); son, Joe Nowell; sisters, Donna Whitley and Cathy McCann; brother, Gary Battle all of Philadelphia, MS; (7) grandchildren; (6) great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Sherry Moore

Sherry Moore, 61, of Jonesboro, Georgia, formerly of Noxapater, MS., passed on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 in Jonesboro, GA. Matthew Dale Hickman

Matthew Dale Hickman of Magee, Mississippi, passed away on June 25th, 2023. Matthew was born on November 13th, 1979, to Nona Dale Hickman Lee and Dwight “Hap” Hickman.

Born in Flowood, MS, Matthew lived the first two years of his life in Ridgeland before moving with his parents to Hattiesburg. He spent ten years of his childhood there and always cherished the friendships he made. But most importantly, it was during those years when Matthew accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and has loved our Heavenly Father with his whole heart ever since. After Hattiesburg, he moved to Magee with his mother and siblings and gained a wonderful stepfather and stepbrother.
Matthew graduated high school from Simpson County Academy. Matthew attended Jones College upon graduation, where he obtained his associate degree. He went on to Mississippi State University and greatly enjoyed his days in Starkville, working at the local co-op and spending time on his Hickman family farm. After his time in Starkville, Matthew returned home and pursued a lifelong career in the agricultural sales industry. He was always a proponent of small towns. Matthew loved Magee, serving in several capacities, including the local Chamber and Magee Board of Alderman. Matthew also loved and served his church, First Baptist Church of Magee.

A friend to all, Matthew touched the lives of countless people. Relationships with his family, friends, and customers were always his top priority. He found joy in entertaining those around him with his music and stories, which were notorious for going on and on. His genuine smile and belly laugh lit up any room he was in, and he made everyone feel as if they were his best friend. Matthew will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and everyone else who crossed his path.

To know Matthew was to love him. He had a larger-than-life personality with an old soul. He was tough yet tender. He cared deeply for those he loved. He was immensely talented. Matthew enjoyed gardening, cooking, antiquing, singing while playing the guitar and piano, and all types of music.
Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Osler Hickman, Sr., and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dale.

He is survived by his father, Dwight “Hap” Hickman (Sheila) and his mother, Nona Dale Lee, and stepfather, Joe Lee; his siblings, Elizabeth Hickman Parish (Lee), Brantley Hickman (Tiffany), and Jarrod Lee (Stephanie); and his beloved uncles and aunts, nephews and nieces, and cousins.

Visitation was held Tuesday, June 27th, at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee, MS, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral was held on Wednesday, June 28th, at First Baptist Church of Magee at 10:00 am. Graveside services were conducted at Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville, MS, at 2:30 pm.
