William Jack Smith

William N. “Mr. Jack” Smith, 103, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2021, at Windsor Place in Columbus, Mississippi. Private graveside services and interment will be Wednesday, January 27 at Memorial Cemetery in Louisville, Mississippi.

Jack was born October 16, 1917, to Joe and Arie Ewing Smith in Noxubee County, Mississippi. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi. Jack was a welder on the first bay constructed for Babcock & Wilcox in West Point. On the day of completion, B & W hired him as their first welder in the plant. He later retired at the age of 63 as a Welder Specialist.

Jack is survived by his daughter Faye Morgan and husband Thomas; and his son Wayne Smith all of Columbus. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Chip (Ginger) Smith, Scott Smith, Bryan (Candace) Smith, Sandy (Harold) Williams, and Melanie (Myron) Nash; as well as his six great-grandchildren: Kelsea (Wes) Nichols, Brant Smith, Brylee Smith, Frazier (Jessica) Williams, Morgan Williams, and Arie (Brandon) Carlton. He also leaves behind three great-great-grandchildren: Farrah Williams, Hugo Williams, and Ellie Carlton. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, and his wife of 81 years Lottie Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in honor of Jack be given to Fairview Baptist Church, 127 Airline Road, Columbus, MS 39702.
