DJ was born March 1, 1940, to Jack and Alnita Reed in Kemper County, Mississippi. He was a member of Noxapater Methodist Church. DJ worked at Taylor Machine Works in Louisville for 40 years. He was a member of the Noxapater Fire Department for 50 plus years, where he served faithfully as their chief for about 40 of those years. One of his greatest joys was being “Pappy” to his three grandchildren: Samantha Stevenson, Karly Reed and Alan Reed. He also leaves behind four brothers: Raymond (Jan) Reed of Louisville, Martin (Charlotte) Reed of Collinsville, Russell (Dean) Reed of Meridian, and Fletcher Reed of Jackson as well as a host of nieces and nephews. DJ was preceded in death by his son Mitchell Reed, his parents, and his step-mother Thelma Reed.

Serving as pallbearers are Myron Stevenson, Mark Reed, Tim Reed, Dennis Reed, Buzzy Wilson, and Johnny Stokes. Honorary pallbearers are James Robert Webb, Wilson Webb, Russell Reed, Raymond Reed, Martin Reed, Fletcher Reed, and all Noxapater Firefighters.
