Algie Marie Little

Mrs. Algie Marie Little, 90, passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012, at her residence in Louisville, Mississippi. Visitation will be Friday, August 31, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012, in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Pender and Rev. Herbert Nettleton officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Noxapater, Mississippi.

Mrs. Little was born on October 2, 1921. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Noxapater.

Mrs. Little is survived by three nieces: Joanne Luke (Glen); Lynn Watson (Carey); and Susie Sims (Ray); three nephews: Lonnie Hobby (Donna); Bo Hobby (Donis); and John Albert Young (Kathy); as well as a host of great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zack Little; her parents, G. W. and Emma Harlan Little; two brothers and one sister.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Womble, Billy Wade Clark, Bobby Pierce, Ray Sims, Evan Kemp, and Allen Goodin. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tribute Program, P. O. James C. Mayo

James Cal Mayo, 77, of Louisville, MS, died on Monday, August 27, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford, following a brief illness. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home, 724 North Columbus Avenue, in Louisville following a private family burial service.

Born November 6, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to Clarence and Annie Mayo, Mr. Mayo graduated from Louisville High School in 1952. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Mississippi College and serving in the United States Air Force, Mr. Mayo obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law.

Mr. Mayo returned to Louisville in 1962 where he practiced law continuously for 50 years. Among other professional accomplishments, Mr. Mayo won an argument before the United States Supreme Court and proudly served many years as the Attorney for the Town of Noxapater. He most recently oversaw the expansion of his law firm, Fair & Mayo, to Meridian, MS, with the addition of his son, John, as his law partner.

Mr. Mayo loved life and lived it to its fullest. Whether riding his tractor at his farm in Oxford; hunting and looking after the timber on his land; debating politics and sports at Hardee's or the Biscuit Bar; cheering for his beloved Wildcats and Rebels; attending the Final Four, the World Series, or the Neshoba County Fair; or fighting for his clients' best interests, Mr. Mayo devoted his full energy to the task. He began his life delivering newspapers on the streets of Detroit during World War II, saw Elvis sing in Las Vegas in 1956, traveled the world with the Mississippi Air National Guard, shook hands with Presidents, never met a stranger, and was a doting grandfather who will be remembered as "Pop."

Mr. Mayo was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rev. Clarence Mayo, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Jones Mayo, his five children, Lee Ann Mayo(Gary Gusick) of Jackson, MS, and their daughter, Vanessa Gusick, Cal Mayo(Caroline) of Oxford, MS, and their children, Virginia, William, Callie and Thomas, John Mayo (Lacey) of Meridian, MS, and their children, Ian, Alex and Max, Peter Mayo of Oxford, MS, and Jane Mayo (Jenna McAuley) of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lee Jones of Louisville, MS, his sister-in-law, Barbara Mayo of Meridian, MS, and six nieces and nephews.

Joann Combest Goss, 63, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at her home in Louisville, Mississippi. James Henry Hemphill


Mr. James Henry Hemphill, 82, died Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Rush Specialty Hospital in Meridian, MS. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 25th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Davis Keen officiating. Interment will be in Sardis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, August 24th, at Porter Funeral Home.
Mr. Hemphill was born October 27, 1929, in Winston County, MS. He was Baptist by faith, with Sardis Baptist Church being the family church. He retired from Boral Brick Company, but had owned a service station/body shop in Michigan for several years. He was first and foremost a wonderful dad and papa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merdieth and Lucille Hemphill; his wife, Juanita Reed Hemphill; two daughters, Shirley Hemphill Pruitt and Rita Hemphill Hall; brother, Paul M. Hemphill; sister, Janice Hemphill White; and a grandson, James Donald Hemphill.
He is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Rick) Lentz of Hazel Park, MI; a son, Johnny Hemphill of Louisville; a special son-in-law, Donny Hall of Macon, MS; eleven grandchildren, Tammy (Randy) Fulton, Jerry Hemphill, Jason (Beth) Hemphill, Jimmy Hemphill, all of Louisville; Scarlet (Grover) Sanschagrin of San Francisco, CA; Rhonda (Scott) Sage, Stephanie (Larry) Morrison, Ricky (Lana) Lentz, all of Michigan; Amanda (Richard) Price of Louisville; Sherry (Tim) Akins of Reform, AL; and Donna Williams of Oklahoma City, OK; 20 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and brothers and sisters: Randy (Cathy) Hemphill, Pauline (Joe) Musial of Michigan; Carolyn (James) Johnson of Macon, MS, and Charles William (Bobbye) Hemphill of Missouri.

Mrs. Wilma Ruth Edwards, 87, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at her residence. She was born & reared in Noxapater, MS. She moved to Michigan in 1953 and back to Noxapater 1985. She married James Edwards on February 11, 1944.Mrs. Edwards enjoyed singing, fishing, rummage sales and spending time with family. She was a Baptist.
MrsEdwards was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Eugene Jones & Mattie Myrtis Price; (2) sisters & (2) brothers; son, David Keith Edwards;

Charles "Sonny Boy" Gregory


Mr. Charles Wayne “Sonny Boy” Gregory, 83, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2012, at his residence in LouisvilleMississippi.  Visitation will be Thursday, August 23, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in LouisvilleMississippi.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2012, at Harmony Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Lundy, Rev. Tommy Jones, and Rev. Charles Rook officiating.  Interment will be in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Gregory was born on June 15, 1929, in Winston County.  He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where he served many years as a deacon and on the cemetery committee.  He worked at B & W in West PointMississippi, from where he retired as a welder after 30 years of service.
Mr. Gregory is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Gregory, of Louisville.  He is also survived by his daughter, Kathryn Rogers and husband, Bill; his sister, Jewell Burrage and husband, Prentice; and his sister-in-law, Doard Bell Gregory, all of Louisville.   He is survived by two grandchildren:  William Rogers and wife, Amy, of EnterpriseMississippi; and Stephanie Hoskins and husband, Michael, of HopkinsvilleKentucky.   He has five great-grandchildren:  Charles William Rogers, Will Rogers, Ahlevia Hoskins, Mary Hoskins, and Lily Hoskins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James T. and Maybell Nowell Gregory; and two brothers, Edgar (Opal) Gregory and Olyn Gregory.

Willene Young Fryery


Willene Young Fryery died peacefully in her sleep on August 19, 2012,  at Winston County Nursing Home.  She was 92.  Visitation will be held on Monday, August 20, 2012,  from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a celebration of her life to follow at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, in the Nowell-Massey Chapel in Louisville.  Rev. Stacey Parvin and Rev. Kyle Ivy will officiate with Leah Boydstun providing music. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Nowell-Massey is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Fryery was born in the Mt. Pisgah Community near Noxapater, MS, to Floyd and Jessie Price Young on May 6, 1920.  When the community high school closed, she and her classmates were forced to attend Burnside School in Neshoba County where she met her future husband, Edgar Fryery.  She completed her education at Longino High School. Edgar often commented that the county’s decision to close Mt. Pisgah High School was one of the best things that ever happened in his life.  They were married nearly 67 years before his death in 2007. They made their home in Louisville and were faithful members of First Baptist Church.  Known as an excellent cook, she always had hot coffee and a fresh coconut cake or huckleberry pie for her husband and his train crew.  Her grandchildren always enjoyed Mamaw’s sausage and rice at every family function and it thrilled her to go home with an empty bowl.  A homemaker with a wonderful sense of humor, she was also the family historian and could quote dates and knew birthdays of almost everyone she had ever met. She loved to fish and she and Edgar enjoyed many of his retirement days on the river.

She is survived by two sons, Bill (Naomi) Fryery of Louisville and Bobby (Deborah) Fryery of Meridian; a daughter, Darlene (Ricky) Bane of Louisville; 5 grandchildren, Coker (Debbie) Fryery of Louisville, Watson (Shannon) Fryery of Saltillo, Kristen (Jeremy) Hill of Meridian, E. J. Bane of Wiggins, and Patrick Bane of Saraland, AL; 4 great-grandchildren, Hayden Fryery of Louisville, Joshua Fryery and Carley Fryery both of Saltillo, and Mason Hill of Meridian; a sister and her best friend Doris (O’Farrell) Parker of Starkville; a much loved brother, John Paul Young, of Noxapater; and her aunt and phone companion, Ira Price of Noxapater. She is celebrating in heaven with her husband, her parents, her brothers, Robert T. “Pete” Young, Mike Young, and Hubert Young and numerous other family members and friends that she loved dearly.

Pallbearers will be Coker Fryery, Watson Fryery, Jeremy Hill, E. J. Bane, Patrick Bane, Johnny Young, Mike Parker, and Wayne Green.

Mrs. Haggard was born October 13, 1923, in Louisville, MS. She was a graduate of Louisville High School and MSCW. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus and an active member of Columbus Junior Auxillary for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Jaynn Haggard Kushner (Harold); grandchildren, Gaije Kushner and Caith Kushner (Anna); and great granddaughter, Amalia Kushner.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William Nowell Haggard; and her parents, Era Bowie and Wilbur Kurt Bennett.

Mrs. Reathia Davis Clark age 77 of Ackerman, MS passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughter Brenda and family on August 11, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband Harce Clark and a daughter Diane Simmons. She is survived by one daughter Brenda (Jerry) Weaver of Ackerman, MS and one son Ollie Clark of Moss Point, MS, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Byron "Bill" Jernigan, Jr., 84, died Sunday, August 11, 2012, at Kindred Healthcare in Madison, TN. Mr. Jernigan was born October 4, 1927 to the late Mr. Willie Byron Jernigan and Mrs. Ollie Mae Jernigan. He was predeceased by his wife Lillie Graves Jernigan and his sister Marguerite (Ray) Garrett. A loving father that is survived by his daughters, Vicky Abney, Texarkana, TX, Brenda (Ronnie) Sherer of Franklin, TN, Sharon (Bill) Beecroft of Kingston Springs, TN, Terry Day of Nashville, TN, and Rhonda Jernigan (Brad) Grissom of Boulder, CO. He is also survived by his beloved granddaughters, Lesley Voltz, Laura Sherer, Jessica Caldwell, and Erin Peeler, his two great-grandsons, Noah and Skye, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Jernigan was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War. He was successful in several positions throughout his career in investment banking and sales. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Ole Miss football, NFL football, college basketball, and golf. He never lost his gorgeous hair or his sense of humor. He loved Cadillacs, a good steak and most of all, making the people around him laugh. He lived life fully and with flair, never giving in and never giving up. He will be missed greatly on Earth but Heaven has gained a great soul.

Elton Earl Watson, Jr

Elton Earl Watson, Jr., 59, passed away on August 11, 2012, in Louisville, MS. Elton was born in Louisville on December 23, 1952. He was a 1970 graduate of Louisville High School and a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he studied microbiology. He began his career as an infection control officer with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in Philadelphia, MS. In 1983, he joined his father as a partner at Louisville Hickory, Inc. before returning to laboratory work at Winston Medical Center and Choctaw Medical Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Elton is survived by his wife of twenty-seven years, Lisa Blalock Watson, of Louisville; daughters, Katie Watson of Arlington, VA, and Maggie Watson of Louisville; parents, Peggy and Earl Watson of Louisville; brother, David Watson of Louisville; sister, Janet (Ron) Collins of Madison; and mother- and father-in-law, Dot and Tom Blalock of Meridian. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 13, from 6 until 8 o’clock in the evening at First Baptist Church of Louisville. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 14, at 11 o’clock in the morning at First Baptist Church of Louisville, with Rev. Leslie Mills officiating. A private burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Cecile Johnson, 72, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Anderson Hospital in Meridian,Mississippi. Mrs. Johnson was born on October 9, 1939, in Bay Springs, Mississippi. She moved to Louisville in 1969 and she was a member of First Baptist Church of Bay Springs.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Sonja Yarbrough of Louisville, Mississippi; and three sons: Berry Johnson and wife, MaryAnne, also of Louisville; Stacey Johnson and wife, Vicky, of Eupora,Mississippi; and Scotty Johnson also of Louisville. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris Strickland Thornton of Bay Springs and Mildred Strickland Jones of Union City, Tennessee; and her brother, Carl Strickland also of Bay Springs. She also has seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chesley F. “Johnny” Johnson; her granddaughter, Kristi Johnson; her parents, Edgar and Willie Strickland; two brothers, Edward and Doyle Strickland; and son-in-law, Stevie Yarbrough.
