Dewitt A. Cutts

Dewitt A. Cutts passed away Monday, September 27, 2021, at his residence near Weir, MS. Dewitt was born September 17, 1935, in Choctaw County, MS, to Henry Hilyard and Gertrude Cutts. He was 86 years old and a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Weir, MS. Dewitt was a retired minister.

Dewitt spent most of his youth on his family's farm in Weir. After graduating from French Camp Academy, he joined the U. S. Army where he served for two years in Germany. After returning to Mississippi, Dewitt attended Holmes Community College where he met his wife, Jessie Baskin. They were married at the Methodist Church in Goodman on October 19, 1957. They moved to Jackson, MS for Dewitt to complete his degree in bible at Mississippi College. While in Jackson, they gave birth to their first child, Sue. After graduation, the family moved to Fort Worth, TX, and Dewitt attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Their second child, Tim, was then born.

Dewitt served as pastor for the following churches: New Salem (Attala-1960s), Cowart Baptist Church (Tallahatchie-1960s), Fentress Baptist Church (1970s), Bethsaida Baptist Church (1970-1990s), and Poplar Springs Church (1990s). Dewitt and his family moved home to the family farm in 1964. He taught 23 years at Weir High School.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021at 2:00 PM, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Weir, MS, with Rev. Paul Vaughn and Rev. Bradley Herod officiating. Interment will be held in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2021, one hour prior to the service time at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Weir, MS.

Dewitt is survived by his wife, Jessie Baskin Cutts, daughter, Sue Cutts Tarver, son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Tonya Cuttsand five grandchildren: Charles Tarver, Derek Cutts, Jamey Cutts, Alyce Tarver-Wells, and Andrea Cutts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, William Henry Cutts.
