Walter Leroy Allen

Mr. Walter Leroy Allen, 91, passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at Attala County Hospital in Kosciusko, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 10th, at Porter Funeral Home, with Dr. Heath Hillman officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Walter was born on December 14, 1929, to Archie and Sudie Dell Allen. He grew up in the Whitehall community of Winston County, attending Ford School and graduating from Newton County Agricultural High School and subsequently, East Central Community Junior College, and the University of Mississippi with a BBA degree and a major in accounting.

After serving two years in the Army during the Korean War, his work as an accountant took him first to the Chevron Oil Co. in New Orleans; then to the Mohasco Carpet Co. in Greenville; Vickers Manufacturing Co. in Jackson; Somerville Manufacturing Co. in Somerville, TN; and finally to the Wurlitzer Piano Co. in Holly Springs, MS, where he was comptroller and chief financial officer. Taking an early retirement there, he moved to Louisville, where he owned and operated Allen Furniture and Appliance Co. for sixteen years.

He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Louisville and a long-time member of the National Association of Accountants. In the Lions, Club, he held a Lifetime Membership, having served over fifty years. As a service to the community and for the Lions Club, for many years he put the American flags our on Main Street for every major holiday. While he was active in AARP, he drove people without transportation to medical appointments. He also did free tax counselling for many years. Walter will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Jean Watson Allen, and his parents.

He is survived by two sons, Walter (Lynn) Allen, Jr. of Louisville, and David (Debbie) Allen of Florence, MS; her grandchildren, Jennifer Allen, Jonathan (Wynne) Allen, Joshua (Kristen) Allen, and Joseph Allen; and four great grandchildren, Cormac, Vera, Arthur, and Amelia.
