Brenda June Yates Whitmire

Brenda June Yates Whitmire, 66, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama, surrounded by her loved ones. A memorial service will be held beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 30, in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel in Louisville, Mississippi, with Bro. Tim Horton officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Brenda was born June 30, 1954, to Emmette Lee and Emma Lula Nichols Yates Crowell in Louisville. She was a 1972 graduate of Louisville High School and a 1976 graduate of Mississippi State University earning a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. After moving to Alabama, she continued her education by earning a Master’s degree in 1990 in Special Education grades 6-12 and later in 1997 earned her Education Specialist’s degree in Instructional Technology and Workforce Development from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She taught middle school Technology Education and was the advisor for the student organization Technology Students of America (TSA). Brenda was also the first Lego League Advisor in the DeKalb County School District in Conyers, Georgia, from which she later retired. She was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church of Hoover, Alabama. During the time she lived in Georgia, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Conyers, Georgia. Brenda was an avid traveler and she enjoyed visiting London and Switzerland, as well as New York, Washington, California, Florida, Colorado, Texas, Tennessee, and Vermont.

Brenda is survived by her sons Justin Whitmire and wife Johnette of Monroeville, Alabama; and Joshua Whitmire and wife Kristen of Pelham, Alabama. She is also survived by her brother Bobby (Mary Ann) Yates and her sister Dianne (Lannie) Wright all of Louisville. Brenda is preceded in death by her parents and her nephew Eric Yates.
