James Lawrence “Jim” Horton

Mr. James Lawrence “Jim” Horton, 92, passed away on July 17, 2018, at this home in Louisville, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 19th, at 2:00 P.M. at Porter Funeral Home, with Rev. Stacy Parvin and Rev. Paul Knight officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon until service time. Interment will be in Whitehall Methodist Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born in Winston County to Ira Woodward Horton, Sr. and Flora Love Horton, on June 9, 1926. He was a graduate of Ford School and Mississippi State University, where he received his B.S. degree in Agriculture. He served in U. S. Army during World War II. He was a business owner, a farmer, a gardener, and a cattleman. He was a commander in the American Legion, a Winston County veteran’s affairs officer, a brother, a father, and a husband. He was an active member of the community and his church, Whitehall United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evelyn Black and Mary Nell Horton; and one brother, Henry Dean Horton.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Ann Bass Horton; two children, Phyllis Ann Holt of Tupelo, and Donna Lynn (Tony) Jordan of Louisville; one brother, Ira Woodward “I.W.” (Judy) Horton of Louisville; one sister, Faye Love Horton of Louisville; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Clayton Holt, Katelyn Suzanne (Grant) Vandiver, and Ethan James Jordan; and a nephew, Brent Woodward Horton.

Pallbearers will be Johnathan Holt, Grant Vandiver, Ethan Jordan, Brent Horton, Danny Mills, and Troy Burroughs. Honorary pallbearers will be W. L. Black, Jimmy Blair, and the men of Whitehall Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Whitehall United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to those friends and family members who visited and called while Jim was ill. A special thanks to the Hospice Ministries workers, Jackie, Dianne, Christie, Chris, and Julie, and also his sitter, Meg for your compassion and excellent care during Jim’s final days and hours.
