Cecil Crowell

James Cecil Crowell, age 90, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 13, at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 14 in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Grady Crowell and Rev. Mark Mayo officiating. Visitation will also be the day of the service at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Murphy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cecil was born in Winston County on December 15, 1927, to Ernest Crowell and Nell Ming Crowell. He graduated from Bond High School in Winston County; and answered the call of his country by serving in the United States Navy as a machinist on the U. S. S. Major. From 1954 to 1958, he worked as a machinist for GM & O Railroad. After 34 years, he retired as a machinist from Taylor Machine Works. Cecil was a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member for 69 years. He loved his church family deeply also serving as a deacon and on various church committees. He also enjoyed backyard mechanics, cows, tractors, sharing the fruits and vegetables of his labor, Roxie, his one-man dog, and fishing.

Cecil is survived by his daughter, Debbie Vance and husband, John, of Brandon, Mississippi; and his son, Darry Crowell and wife, Debra, of Louisville. One of his greatest joys was being “Pop” to his grandchildren, Robbie Vance and Lindsey Crowell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Stewart Crowell; and his parents.

Serving as pallbearers will be Quinton Hill, Jimmy Lovorn, Jeff McMinn, Keith Ming, Greg Sisson, and Taylor Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cecil Crowell Sunday School class at Murphy Creek Baptist Church. Memorial contributions in honor of Cecil may be given to Murphy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 5420 Bond Road, Louisville, MS 39339 or to Murphy Creek Baptist Church.
