Mrs. Jean Davis Shackelford Hendrix was born on June 26, 1926, in Laurel, Mississippi, and passed away on November 19, 2017, at 91 years of age. A visitation and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November, 26th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon at Porter Funeral Home. Private graveside services will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Johnston Hendrix, Jr., her father, Jefferson Davis Shackelford; her mother, Bessie Clay Overstreeet Shackelford; and her sisters, Martha Elizabeth (Bob) Shackelford Goodrich and Virginia (Babysister) Shackelford Miller Fair.
She is survived by her five children, Dr. Cheralyn Powers, Lisa (Dan) Milloy, Bubba (Vicki) Hendrix, Shawn (Tim) Butts, and Scott (Nora Gay) Hendrix. Also surviving are her precious eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She is also missed by her former students in Speech and English classes at Louisville High School, where she taught for many years.
Mama Jean had many adventures as a proud US Army wife, living in Alaska, Taiwan, Germany, France, Missouri, Georgia, and North Carolina. After graduating from MSCW, she began her early career in Hattiesburg, MS, in radio advertising and returned to work in teaching, then again in radio advertising at WLSM.
Her love for language was evident throughout her life, “O, they lived long in the alms basket of words.” – Shakespeare.
To those who showed love, compassion, and patience for the past fourteen years while at the Winston County Nursing Home, no words can express our gratitude for all you have done for our Mama Jean.
She would be honored to have you show your love by giving to a children’s charity of your choice.
