Joyce Harris Sargent Hurt

Joyce Sargent Hurt, 89, passed away Monday, December 7, at Winston Medical Center Nursing Home in Louisville, Mississippi. A service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 9, at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home in Louisville. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of the service.

Joyce was born in Louisville, MS, January 9, 1926. She was graduated from Louisville High School and East Central Junior College in Decatur, MS. She was married to Grady Alexander Sargent for 46 years until the time of his death in 1992. Together they were volunteers for many civic organizations in Natchez and Hattiesburg and both enjoyed serving the statewide Mississippi Seniors Golf Association. Joyce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Louisville, MS.

Joyce was also preceded in death by her husband, H. Lamar Hurt. Joyce and Lamar were residents of Louisville and had been married for 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Inez Chambliss Harris and Harvey Leon Harris, Sr. as well as brothers, Harvey Jr., Roy, and Dan Harris and sisters, Betsy Harris Hill and Jane Harris McCool.

She and Grady are survived by sons Grady Harris Sargent (Caffey) of Dallas, TX and John Stuart Sargent (Lynne) of Austin, TX and daughters Susan Sargent Jones (Bobby) of Ridgeland and Alexis Sargent Brown (Alton) of Madison. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Wilson and Adam Brown (Michelle), Robert and Alexis Jones, Elizabeth and Lee Sargent, and Katie Sargent Blaze (Joe), as well as four great-grandchildren.

Joyce had a genuine love for people and truly never met a stranger. She was always willing to diplomatically give her advice by prefacing it with, “If I were you . . .”

The family would like to thank Dr. Sam Suttle and the staff at the Winston Medical Center Nursing Home for their care and kindness.
